Re: What's really going on? Selling, 'rebuilding the squad', what?

We're reducing the wage bill, that's what's going on.

I disagree, we are clearly restructuring the wage bill. If we were solely cutting the wage bill giving Skrtel and Suarez new contracts makes no sense.

FSG has repeatedly stated they are happy to pay high wages, as long as it is to players who produce on the pitch.

Really think we'll struggle to place higher than last season. Sorry to say it but I just can't see where the goals are going to come from.

But we're going to play nicer football and still not score :)

So they are happy to fork out 15m for allen, 11m for Borini, but cant give a few extra mil for Dempsey who is quite decent? Doesn't add up.

It does add up if you have a certain valuation for a player.

Whatever that valuation was for Dempsey, we clearly did not want to go beyond that. And I am glad about that.

We were a fucking laughing stock last year when Dalglish spent way over the top for Carroll, Downing and Henderson...at least now we are not just throwing money at clubs who want to rip us off.

Spurs have spent nothing in net terms this window yet it looks like they've done excellent business. They just had to sell two of their best players to fund all those transfers.

When there was talk of Agger going there was murder on here, nothing less than £30m. Can't have it both ways.

When do the clubs accounts come out?

People like you piss me off,
Downing still here played well last night
Henderson good young lad played well last night
Enrique still here
Suarez still here
Coates still here good prospect

Andy paid the price JH claimed was him +15 mill from the Torres deal in other words he sanctioned it and was happy to brag about it.
Adam lost maybe 2mill it happens.

Learn some respect for a legend of a manager and a man instead of bleating this shit all the time in every thread.

Yes we have. This will be the first season where we should make a profit after cutting the wage bill.
To be fair the accounts have included some rather extravagant spending on plans and stadiums works.

Morgan and Yesil will get playing time now. Either one could be the answer to our problems, you just never know.

Well I've talked about gambles but that's what's called a long odds bet.

It was becoming obvious that Arsenal have offered the chance for someone to pop up and take that 4th spot this year. The other three will sail away. That brings £25m plus, worth a bet. We've probably left the door open for Spurs, Newcastle and, for god's sake Everton to take a punt at that one now. Hopefully we won't get any injuries up front in which case we'd be battling it out with Fat Sam and his new strike force. Forget the Europa and LC this year, they no longer matter as we don't have the squad depth or the goals. It's all about the league and crossing your fingers that Suarez doesn't get injured (or banned)

What we become the English Glasgow Rangers - FFS wake up - We are in the middle of a world economic disaster and you think football is immune to such nonsense - Lets not forget FSG stopped us hitting the wall.

So yeah it fucking matters that Cole is on 5-6 m a year for fuck all, it matters that we were paying shit loads of money to players
that stood no fucking chance of playing and we paid over the odds for young players with potential. These mistakes need to be corrected too

Bout time you woke up.  Who did Cole go to?  Wasn't talking about Cole.  Talking about letting a centre forward go (you know, a goalscorer type, hardly blessed there are we) and no fuckin replacement.

Hardly Glasgow Rangers is it.  Rangers got in the position they're in by living beyond their means.  Total opposite of FSG, who spin like fuck, yet splash fuck all.

Suarez who's finishing is quite terrible, Borini who has just joined and is still very young, Assiadi who nobody knows how he will turn out, Cole who is shit, and 3 youngsters, our options upfront are terrible.

my point was the numbers are ok.it's quality we need now and if there wasn't much quality available then it makes sense to wait and reinvest in jan or next summer.

Just do not see the logic in what has happened today. The manager says he wants a couple through the door, we refuse to up our bid for Dempsey and now we are two strikers short. And if Rory Smith is right about FSG refusing to spend any more cash on transfers, then what are they doing here? 25mil every summer isn't going to breach the top four. What message does it send out to the rest of the players like Skrtel and Suarez? And for those who say we are a work in progress, well City, United and Chelsea can buy progress in a flash. Bad night.

It's now up to Rodgers to work his magic. He has to find back-up strikers within the squad and I don't think putting too much pressure on the likes of Sterling, Morgan, Assaidi, Borini etc. is good. Don't get me wrong I really, really like the players we've brought in but with 4 competitions and potential of a lot af games to be played we seem to have a very thin squad.

I'm still optimistic as I always am with a new season but 4-5 injuries and we look extremely thin.

I think we'll be ok to be honest with the new system 4-3-3
who out of borini, downing and suarez scores goals? and what happens when borini or suarez are injured?
we need at least one center forward to lead the line and we have 0.

We can't risk any first choice players in the cup competitions. Suarez has been booked twice already this season so it will be grim when he is suspended. A shocking lack of ambition has been shown by FSG - they have effectively given Rodgers no backing whatsoever. No wonder they didn't want Benitez. Seems like we are doomed to asset stripping again and Rodgers will suffer after Dalglish like Benitez suffered after Houllier. Was buzzing after the Man City game - serious comedown this week :(

I think the best way to answer the question of the thread title is to calculate each transfer bought, minus each transfer out since they bought the club.

it be interesting to see what the net balance actually is ?  If someone has all the factual data taht would be really interesting.

We can't even afford Clint Dempsey

Tottenham stole two players off of us

I don't rate Dempsey or Sigurdsson highly so I don't care where they go but what irks me is our attitude. We needed a player like Dempsey and we needed a forward, we promised our manager that we will get someone in but eventually we didn't. Why? because we didn't want to pay an extra 2 million. FSG has a lot to answer for, they are liked by most only because they are not H&G.

I get the impression FSG are slashing the wage bill in order to sell the club. Can't see any other reason why they won't put their hand in their pocket for new players.

I don't think they were slashing the wage bill to sell the club.

They were slashing it because it needed to be cut. We had a Champions League wage bill, without the Champions League football.
We spent big and kept giving generous contracts, presumably in the expectation that we would quickly get back into the CL.  That didn't happen.

It then reached a point where there was a difficult decision to be made. You could try throwing more money at it in the hope of a quick fix. Problem is that it's a risky tactic, and one that had already failed.
You end up with players you don't want on wages other clubs can't afford, and you practically have to give them away to get them off the wage bill.

The alternative is to cut back. The downside is that while you're saving money, it's also making it harder to get back to the top.

All the owners care about is balancing the books.

Go ask Leeds and Portsmouth what happens when your owners don't care about that.

Frankly, if I was Brendan I'd resign. Obviously been told lies and has now been hung out to dry by his MD.
Although I have backed the FSG getting value argument and I think it has been a good transfer window overall, we are still light up front unless borini and assaidi can guarantee us 20 to 30 goals combined. However, I also think BR has been shafted here as he obviously said that there had to be a replacement for AC and in fact he'd be insane not to have a striker lined up to replace him. Well that means he has been either lied to or had a big fuck you from the owners. Even moneyball recognises that you have to pay more for a key player, whilst getting value for the rest. I am not talking about Dempsey being a key player, rather a Damiao type and there rumours he was available and also we were offered him. This part of it looks bad and suggests FSG are not in it to win and in it for the long haul, but rather to sell on...and may be they'll sell sooner than we think.
