I was hoping for Gomez to become the best CB pairing for Van Dijk for the next 5 years but his injury record does not provide great encouragement. In the circumstances getting in Van Ligt even at those inflated figures is a good investment and between Gomez and him, our CB strength beyond Van Dijk would be secured and we would be less exposed by the weaknesses of Matip or Lovren. Gomez need not be discouraged unduly as he can alternate with Alexander Arnold for RB and with Van Ligt for CB and it took even Carragher for example till later in his career to secure the CB spot for himself permanently.

If we are serious about competing consistently on all fronts, then three top quality CBs will all get plenty of game time.

Salah broke the Premier League record for goals scored in an 38-game season though. And scored over 40 goals all season. Only De Bruyne had a season which could be compared to that, and this season showed, that he actually isn't missed by City that much.

Van Dijk can win the POTY this season for sure though. He has been immense all season, bar maybe one or two games.

To be serious, lots of players have under-performed after huge transfer fees. Some people laughed at the fee for VVD but now it looks like the best bit of dealing ever. He is by a mile the best centre half in the league. The difference that he and Alisson has made is immense.

Incredible CB, adding some goals to his game just adds even more for the opposition to worry about. He's sublime and loved the casual head nod as if it was inevitable he was going to net
