It’s still flying off shelves even after the supermarkets introduced limits, which tells me people are going to multiple tills and/or multiple supermarkets, given that all the home delivery slots are booked up too.
Andrex et al are going to see a large drop in sales at some point when people realise there’s no shortage and start using their hoard.

Yeah it's going to be boom for a few months and then no sales for years....

The amount of food that will go to waste is sickening, I'm hoping there are a lot of cases of salmonella and gastroenteritis when people eat food that's gone off.

For anyone that has a shortage of meat, fish, vegetables etc, I have a local place which is like a collection of butchers, fish mongers, delis etc and it’s absolutely thriving. No shortage of produce, not absolutely packed full of morons and you’re supporting the local trade. I can only assume the trend is similar elsewhere, worth a look in favour of fighting with fucking idiots at Tesco.

I’ve got a mate who works in stats with govt. just WhatsApp’d him. Yeah, they’re planning for all of us to catch this. At least they’re not underestimating this virus now.

That makes no sense. If they are planning for everyone in your area to get it then I can't see why the government are even bothering trying to stop the spread of this thing.

It’s the maddest thing to be panic buying. Especially as if it came to it, you could have a shower instead.

At least with food, you can see some logic to the panic in that people get scared into thinking they’ll starve. But to be panicking over wiping your arse...

The planning assumes that many/most will get it at some point.

They need to stop it spreading exponentially and everyone having it at the same time as that would overload the NHS.

We’re at 4,000 cases at the moment. If it’s unchecked it doubles every 2-3 days. That’s around 16,000 in a week, 128,000 in a fortnight, 1,000,000 in a month.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/uk/

Those figures suggest that the measures being taken so far are doing something as the daily increase is high but it’s linear not exponential.

I know what you are saying makes perfect sense Al but aren't the figures for cases pretty redundant given the lack of testing. When the cases were in the 100's we were being told that 5-10k were probably infected. Given the amount of social activities young people who may be pretty asymptomatic the true numbers could be much much higher.

Daughter said that her High School is going to be used as a hospital if things get really bad 😳😲
The old Paddington Comp (Archbishop Blanche) that has recently been demolished was designed so that it could be used as an emergency hospital. Wide corridors and doors etc.  Built at the height of the Cold War.
Given the crumbling state of the Royal, and the New Royal years away from service, knocking it down may have been a mistake.

It's erm, all the gentleman working from home all day with access to internet porn...

Self employed people, do many employ themselves through their own company so would still be entitled to 80%? I suspect the govn't will see the hole shortly and plug it with a similar assesment based on recent current earnings.

Al666,. good point about a labour govn't would probably not have left so little capacity in the NHS , My comment was more generally would they be looking after people directly, rather than via keeping companies afloat. Obviously it's a fundamental difference in how people view the world . The tories will believe that if they can look after companies, then the companies can look after the people . Don't need to reply about how well that works...

Obviously none of can know yet, but given that nobody else can do more than slow the tide, while China has gone in two months from hell to the best place on the planet, I’m sceptical.

There's something enormously fishy about China at present imo. Are they just going to keep everyone locked in for the rest of time?

Regarding face masks, I've seen a lot of them lately and I know the advice is that they dont really work, but surely it will prevent people from touching their nose and mouth and if worn with glasses, their eyes?

I'm not going to wear one, but would be interesting to see the rate of infection between a wearer/non wearer in a controlled test
A friend of ours is a GP and she says they are worse than useless. After a while they become saturated, they become uncomfortable and so you start touching a soggy mask instead of your face. Spot the problem.
They are more of a social convention in some countries.

Depends on the mask. those surgical masks yeah. FFP3 are what the healthcare professionals use, so doubt they wear useless masks.

If the companies dont find a way to put us back to 100% then I see it as a huge flaw in the scheme. In that I would be better off not working (earning 80% of my wage) than I would be working 3 days (earning 60% of my wage).
Just to point out, few (if any) people will require 100% of their prior wages to get by. No going out, much lower travelling expenses, no holidaying, no getting in the decorators, etc. The money available must be distributed where it can make most impact.
would rather have a wank wearing a barb wire glove

That means 80k fatalities in London then (I'm guessing Londons population)

How the hell have China managed  3,255 deaths, and counting, with a population of over 1 billion.

The fatality numbers are understated, it's an unspoken truth here.

However, there's no doubt that they have been able to control internal transmission of cases and that life is slowly beginning to return to normal. They have been aggressive in terms of enforcing the lockdown, testing and isolating suspected cases and following up through a bottom-up localized approach where every individual was expected to (and did) take responsibility for controlling the outbreak.

They covered up for a month or so in the beginning given that there are reports as far back as November of an unknown disease cropping up. If they had been more transparent in sharing information and ringing the alarm, none of this would have happened.

Nonetheless, once they mobilized resources, the response was effective and efficient. There is much to be admired and learned from that approach in a crisis situation.

I've a question about the numbers. Is ANYONE who passes away and is then tested positive counted as a case. Extreme example for illustration purposes, if you died in a car crash and were for some reason tested, would you count?

In short Sunak is against any measure that would lead to a fairer society, is pro brexit and pro making the rich richer and poor poorer. That is far more important than how well he communicates Cummings message.

Unless you are making essential use of your bicycle (going to work, shopping, etc.), you can not use your bicycle* - you can not use it for exercise. We go go for walks and runs for exercise, but only very locally. I wonder if they'll ever apply similar restrictions in the UK?

I've a question about the numbers. Is ANYONE who passes away and is then tested positive counted as a case. Extreme example for illustration purposes, if you died in a car crash and were for some reason tested, would you count?

If you were tested, yes. But currently, they wouldn't test you - they only test people who are in hospital with covid symtoms.

I have it lads, been told to stay away from work etc, seems like only a mild case, cold like symptoms, headaches, aches and pains, severe lethargy, I watch those videos of those poor people on ventilation etc and feel equal pity and shame, for getting off so lightly.
The majority of us will probably get it at some stage. I am happy to hear that you have mild case. Rest up and take care.

I think staying at home, distancing themselves, and being respectful, is a good start, no need to be heroes, just don't be c*nts.
Exactly, everyone can do that.

If it’s been around since November, then surely it’s been around in other countries longer than thought too? There’s flights between wuhan and other global cities.

Where is that? (Asking for a friend!).

It's a good idea, as long as it's not banned. Different countries have implemented this differently, in Italy, Spain, and France, you can't cycle. In Belgium, it's encouraged.

It's definitely possible.

They are searching for Patient Zero at the moment and there are reports of the first case being traced to as far back as November 17. https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3074991/coronavirus-chinas-first-confirmed-covid-19-case-traced-back

Tbf it's been a few years since they knocked it down, they could hardly have predicted this.

Wonder if there is any part of the new hospital that could be converted to emergency use under the circumstances? Doubt it.

You assume journalists have some sort of intelligence then you get one of the first questions, 'are people expected to stay away from their Mothers on Mothers Day and will you be seeing yours?'.  Unbelievable.  Out of all the things to ask after the raft of announcements.

They are only asking what their readers want to know.

What has impressed is the BBC news feature where the reporter answers questions sent in by the public on video. She tries to get the facts across and clarify misguided rumour and falsehoods. Top journalism.

Pity they didn’t do that with Brexit, it would have served a better purpose than going into a greasy spoon cafe in stoke and broadcasting the stupidity being expressed there as facts.

The amount of food that will go to waste is sickening, I'm hoping there are a lot of cases of salmonella and gastroenteritis when people eat food that's gone off.

Was thinking that, next week the bins will be overflowing with food that hasn't even been opened. Wonder if the fuckers will learn, or if they will just restock what they are throwing out.
