Absolutely loved both of the former - not interested in either of the latter. Ex Machina was so good I ran out of superlatives (being a massive Blade Runner fan) - and I am looking forward to seeing Alicia Vikander in The Danish Girl.

I saw it. She is excellent in it although The Danish Girl wasnt that great.

right the bookies have the spotlight director(2/1) as favourite for the oscar. i see it between inarritu(3/1) for the revenant and george miller(14/1) for mad max. spotlight(4/6) will win the oscar for best picture because its highlighted a serious issue so in tradition the film that highlights the issue wins best picture. the revenant(4/1) is the film that will be spoke about in years to come though

I hope they give it to Miller for Mad Max. He's a bloke in his dotage who absolutely blew the action genre away 30 odd years after originally doing it. He deserves some recognition surely?

I know what you mean but in a time where Disney/Pixar can earn recognition so can this. Spotlight highlighted a very important subject but I didn't think it was a great film. The Revenent was good but soooo bleak. Why not Mad Max for a change?

The Special Effects department should indeed get some recognition...and the film does have some jaw-dropping sequences, but overall it left me cold...it felt like you were watching a video game...immersive and impressive for about half an hour....but then all a bit too repetitive and one-dimensional to be classed a cinematic triumph

in terms of Oscar shouts, personally I'd go for

The Revenant

Ex Machina

The Hateful Eight

...and without a doubt Winter On Fire for best documentary

Your probably right but I've not really seen too many great films this year, there's been no Whiplash. Just think with the cgi wankfest of the fast and furious, terminator whatever Miller did something remarkable

Nah...can understand people not digging it - particularly if you think Mad Max is the best film of the year - it's overlong and imperfect, but to me its unmistakable Tarantino (and im not his biggest fan) provocative, violent, darkly amusing...and it looks and sounds terriffic ...quite brave of him to make something so uncompromising at this stage of his career - and no-one else but him could have made it..a true autere movie and a cracking bit of cinema...hats off to him

Watched Sicario last night. Beautifully shot, well acted, didn't really do anything for me apart from eye candy though.

Spot on. Amazing audio and soundtrack too. Plot was fucking awful though. Swiss cheese of a story. Perhaps made all the worse by seeing Cartel Land, which deals with the subject in a far, far superior way.

I'd say visually Mad Max deserves to win something - it was awesome.
Some of the action scenes were excellent and I enjoyed it at the cinema....but some of the hype and praise for this film does seem a little OTT to me.
Very solid and enjoyable action/drama/post apocalyptic movie for sure but not something I'm in a huge rush to see again.

It's all just opinions though.

I don't necessarily think mad max is the film of the year. I'm saying it deserves recognition for taking a cgi dominated genre and giving it a kick up the arse. Darkly amusing to describe the hateful 8 confuses me because the dialogue was not clever, I've seen it before, the same actors delivering the dialogue. I would say it's a lazy film from an ego maniac

Just watched The Hateful Eight. Nice soundtrack, other than that didn't do much for me.

Off to Star Wars later.
Soundtrack was good...

It's also a strong feminist film I think. All the main, good characters are strong women and you see that in the moment Max defers to Furiosa when that shot needed to made-he knew he couldn't and she would-that's not the Max that we saw in the original films, is it.

In what is essentially a two hour car chase film, Miller kept me entertained...I don't ask more from an action film.

It's one of only two English language/big budget Hollywood films I've really liked and will watch again.

Its boss. It takes this template of an action movie and delivers on thrills and spectacles but also imagines a world when civilisation due to man made catastrophe has reverted to its most brutal and primitive instincts of domination, slavery, fanaticism and cruelty. Miller absolutely made an amazing movie, and built on his originals, which in their depiction of a future post apocalyptic dystopia where cars are the remnants of human technology that give scavengers and savage men power, it was simply visionary and influenced the way we imagine the future. Very influential, as genre and as a dystopian vision.

Some people say its a feminist movie but that downplays its excellence. It depicts the domination and enslavement of men too in the war boys, how people can be abused, enslaved and made fanatics by religion and cults.

I'd nominate Charlize Theron as an actress, special effects, and direction. I'd give Miller the Oscar for best director, but I doubt he'll win, and I'd nominate it for best film but it won't win because its not an Oscar winning kind of movie.

Its one hell of a movie. Brutal, savage, clever and underlying it all, very humane. And Furiosa is one of the best characters of recent years.

"My idea was to build Liverpool into a bastion of invincibility. Napoleon had that idea. He wanted to conquer the bloody world. I wanted Liverpool to be untouchable. My idea was to build Liverpool up and up until eventually everyone would have to submit and give in."

Yeah, it was basically just porn with a story.

Trumbo was good and well worth a watch - similar to Argo, with John Goodman playing the role of a movie mogul (again). Overall though, it is hard to see past this film for the Oscars.

I don't think it is as good as Argo, but still a very interesting and well produced film. Hysenberg is brilliant and it is good to see that he has gone straight.

well, its all a matter of opinions innit
Spoiler
but surely you see the resemblance?
its basically an inverse Reservoir Dogs. a group of criminals trapped in a room with one traitor
as opposed to a group of lawmen trapped in a house (room) with several traitors.

and what can i say, i found the "I tortured your son before he sucked my black cock and then i executed him" monologue to be crass (duh) and uninspiring.
the Haberdashery staff execution scene didnt grab me either, with several armed thugs ambushing unarmed unsuspecting women, also since it was a flashback you knew the result beforehand, so there was no suspense.

Started to watch Cartel Land this morning, compulsive and compelling viewing.

The things it shows you are barely believable, I kept thinking "that can't be real" (obviously I accept that it is).

Will watch the 2nd half when I get back home this afternoon, looking forward to it feels like the wrong choice of words!

Stumbled onto this the other day. I know it's probably not everyone's cup of tea but I love this sort of film....

Skinwalker Ranch
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2881698/
A scientific research team investigates and documents the supernatural phenomena surrounding the disappearance of a cattle ranchers 10 year old son. Inspired by true events that shocked the paranormal community around the world.

A friend just saw this and said it was excellent and that I'd love it.
So yes, definitely want to see this.

Enjoyed He Never Died..a blackly humorous low budget horror flick...imaginative premise to it, and a claustrophobia that at times put me in mind of Eraserhead......would've worked even better with a bigger budget - which is not always the case, but imo is here. Think skint, oddball Marvel Comics movie and you'll get the idea  8) ...Henry Rollins is great as the troubled lead and theres talk of it becoming a TV series, which would be the perfect medium for it. 7/10
