There have been a few players that have really impressed me but aren't mentioned a lot in the thread. First Gary MacKay Steven seems to be a really good prospect. He has skill, some pace, good at crossing and passing. He seems to be lacking a little in terms of goal threat but he can really impress at times. Secondly Steve Irwin is a player who I think is underrated. He defends well and could teach our first team full-backs a thing or two about supporting the attack. Also Martin Kelly and Joe Kennedy, u-18 cb's, seem to be very solid both seems to be a threat off set pieces. These 4 players should be considered when talking about our exiting prospects. Although we do seem to have quite a few currently, not to mention Dean Bouzanis (sp) and our other young GKs Mihaylov and Hansen.

good question.   i guess you could also ask what kuyt, riise, or previously voronin, need to to do to get dropped...   answering that question is intrinsically linked to opportunities for the likes of nemeth & insua.

Hadn't really noticed him, but was getting good reviews tonight.

Wasn't able to recover a Kennedy mistake when Sunderland made it 3-2

True oh so true.

I wouldn't necessarily say so. I thought the same under Houllier about the likes of Baros, Mellor, Raven, Whitbread, Welsh, Partridge, Otsemebor and Wright being overlooked in favour of Heskey, Smicer, Diao, Diouf, Biscan and the likes (Houlliers' supposed favourites) because they weren't playing well by a long fucking chalk and I thought when Rafa came in he'd be giving the youth a lot more opportunities and to be fair when he came in and didn't know the players he did give them games, even Darren Potter who I hadn't even given any thought to to be honest

And where are they now? nowhere! if they were that great then they wouldn't be playing at the likes millwall, chester, carlisle, wolves and the likes. They'd be plying their trade in the top leagues but they're not which leads me to think that perhaps Houllier was right, no matter how bad Diao, Heskey, Biscan, Smicer played they were better options than what we had in our youth at the time and Rafa obviously after being able to examine what they were like agreed with his Gallic counterpart.

So that makes me also think that Rafa is the best judge when and what youth are given time above what we have in our first 24 or so. I also think Rafa will give a lot more bench time next season to players from the youth set up for two reasons...the increase in subs allowed and the quality of the youth coming through. Rafa's kids.

If we get 2/3 first team regular players from this batch we have right now that is a success.

Yes

ah, thought it was coming in in a while or summat. Interesting. May give a bit more credence to the psyching up of the squad thing that Rafa has signed up to. Dunno, thinking out loud.

So does that mean Itandje and Martin both get a berth?  :P

no, that's good. Hope to god it doesn't mean 5 substitutions in 10 years time, tho nothing will suprise me.

I'll be happy as long as Rafa uses the extra two spaces, or atleast one of them, on a youngster(s).

Nemeth in particular deserves his chance to impress.

Mackay-Steven is the number 11 who you can see make a run towards the box, the person on the ball is Pourie.

Anyone.

He was listed in world soccer magazines top 50 most exciting teenagers, and I have seen him play very well, such as against Ireland U21's and England U21's.

But I have heard some bad things about him from fans of his old club, and he made an absolute howler in last years champions league.

to be honest, if we could get the reported 4m for him after paying 225 grand, I would take it.

Don't know what he's like but I heard on the radio yesterday (think it was 5 Live or Merseyside, not sure) that he was loaned out partly because he couldn't get a work permit here in the UK.  Also someone wanted to buy him permanently and rafa has put a £4million valuation on him.

Sorry I can't substantiate this as my ears were only half open at the time.

"Of course I didn't take my wife to see Rochdale as an anniversary present, it was her birthday. Would I have got married in the football season? Anyway, it was Rochdale reserves." Bill Shankly

"If a player is not interfering with play or seeking to gain an advantage, then he should be." Bill Shankly on the off-side rule

FC Twente, the club he is loaned to, want to buy him permanantly. But the player himself (notice I am trying to avoid spelling his name ;D) believes that rafa put the 4m valuation on him because it is unrealistic and Twente won't pay it.

"Liverpool have asked for such a high price, because they wanted to discourage Twente from buying me,” he said.

"I expect to join Liverpool in July, because my visa problems will be settled by then."

Martin, Gulacsi, Mihaylov, Bouzanis. I suppose you could include Reina, Itanje and Carson as they're not exactly old.

Wouldn't surprise me.  Lots of players between the 18-21 range who pre-date Rafa.  Players Rafa's signed, or younger players are coming through, and their is greater justification for playing Ajdarevic, for example, in the reserves next season, than Guthrie.

possibly.  There's also the possibility Ajdarevic will play wide left for the ressies to groom him for a more realistic role in the firsts....
