Indeed a lot of the City is changing. The Pier Head itself has changed a lot since then[well apart from the main buildings], that drafty bus station, with that dreadful Subway to the Z stands which no one used other than a Toilet, all demolished. The City Centre itself has changed a lot although some parts are still recognisable, but remember the old Hood Street Gyrotory?

Ah. The Bubbles, and the bridge over the road that I uset to go over on the way to and from the buses to school.

I guarantee, every day, one of my dick mates would hit the stop button on ther escalators at the williamson Square end..... just as I was half way down them.

I miss the gyratory.  This single lane bus lane we have now is shit.  Only takes one bus to break down and you backed up all the way to fucking Lord Street.

This brings back memories of the late 80s when i used to go to the Chippy at the Pier Head, buy a bag of chips, then going up stairs to the Balcony & eat them.

I'll get you back for that ...you made me stay awake to find it.....not easy, but the railway bridge in the background was the clue but I didn't realise at first that that it's a carriage of a train going over it, I initially thought it was some building behind and thought it might be towards the river.

Looks like it was some kind of park on the left hand side back then.

The 'not half' is obviously the right hand side - the left is unrecognisable.

I can't get to that link, seems to need me to register.

On that picture, it's fascinating to see some of the details that have survived.
That first bay window on the 1st floor, right side, still seems to have it's original upper opening frames, as does the fourth one along, and the little detail finials with their tiny sloping roofs are all still there.

Might be wrong but it looks like how I remember here to be when I was a kid before the road widening. I think that was the Old Police Station on the left.
The brick detail on the vertical edge of the building on the right seems to match.

I have a spare flat bed scanner you can have if you want it.  It's about  7 years old, but only ever got used about half a dozen times.  It comes with all of it's bumf and software drivers, cables etc.

I upgraded to a printer/scanner a couple of years ago, so it's now surplus to requirements.

I don't want anything for it, but just never got around to getting rid of it, as I hate throwing away anything that still has a good use.

Cannon - Canoscan Lide 30.  Virtually mint condition.

Let me know if you want it. -  If not, anyone else looking in can have it if they want it.

What are the chances of finding a photo of freemasons row? I've been looking everywhere. So many places to scour through though!

My Great Grandad had a foundry there. I think it ended up being bombed during the war, but I'd love to find a photo of it to show my Grandad. He is convinced it was where Gladstone Street is now, but I'm wondering if freemasons row was actually longer then than it is now. It was definitely on that side of the road at least.

Also would love more photos of Wavertree, as that's where he grew up. Particularly Spofforth road (opposite the gas works) and Edgerton road. Better get searching!

Matt. With it not being a major thoroughfare, I suspect that pictures of Freemasons row might be at a bit of a premium, and if you really want to track down any photo's then your best bet would probably be Liverpool Records Office.


I've got a few old maps if you need any scans.

Freemasons Row used to be longer than it is now, although it's still mostly there - in spirit at least, even if all of it is newish buildings.   The area did suffer bomb damage during the war, but the final nail in it's coffin was the widening and expansion of the new Leeds street, post war, and for the approaches for the new Mersey Tunnel in the mid 1960s.


Matt. Would this be the place?  Or is 1900 too early ?  (yeah, I appreciate he wouldn't be alive, but it might be the same company)

1920! That's shocked me mate, I don't know why I thought it was put there to commemorate something in the 1970's.

1920! That's shocked me mate, I don't know why I thought it was put there to commemorate something in the 1970's.

The many things around Sefton Park all placed there or adapted, prior to the first world war were all based around J.M.Barrie's Peter Pan.(published 1911)

The Fairy glen, The Jolly Roger in the lake, even the statue itself of Peter Pan, with all of the animals on etc., so 1920 for the boat would fit just fine.

Personally, I always remember it most from the late 1970s, when we used to go on school trips to the park (I'm from the north end), when the boat was mostly a little bit shabby.
I think it was eventually removed in the late 80s or early 90s after repeated vandal attacks, and possibly being set on fire.

Shame. It was a very iconic boat on the lake, which makes me quite nostalgic seeing it in that photo, when it's all brand new, with it's masts and rigging intact and everything.

She really must of been a beauty in her day.

Wow thanks for the response. I thought it unlikely to find anything as you say, but posted just in case anyone came across anything by chance. The map is really really helpful, thanks so much for posting - it shows why my Grandad doesn't really recognise it in the present day!

I will have to ask if he knows the name of the business. I know my Great Grandad had a business partner, but not sure of his name. I know they were originally based in a tiny street next to lime street. My Grandad remembers adjoining houses and wondering how they could possibly live next to the noisy foundry. Not sure what year they would have moved to freemasons row from there. My Grandad was born in 1928 so I'd assume it would have been mid 1930's.

As a kid I recall something happening to the Fairy Glen as well, perhaps it had been closed for a while and re-opened mate.
