Dont understand why so many people are so surprised.

We are a mediocre team with too many mediocre players in the squad. It beggars belief how many performances a la Southampton, Birmingham, Newcastle people need to realise this. It's all well and good pinning it down to injuries, tinkering with the team, resting Alonso (we were none to bright before he got injured) but it doesnt get away from how poor our squad is.

The only comfort (or maybe making it worse?) is that come wednesday night we'll be like lions, guaranteed.

I think that was a result of the team selection. Stevie had to be restrained today because he only had ALT and Welsh with him in midfield. Le Tallec isn't in there to win the ball and Welsh is still wet behind the ears. Shouldn't have dropped Igor IMO. He had a game off against Spurs - should be fit enough to play.

More embarrassed than angry with the performance displayed today.

4th is definately gone now... and I remember saying some time ago we wouldn't finish 5th ? Well, I stand by that statement.

Our only hope is winning the CL now. Let's hope the lads can raise their game in europe. Surely we can beat a team at least once in 5 games?

I dont think it was so much the team formation or selection, le tallec and welsh were the only 2 inexperienced players that started, even with that we had enough quality on the field to win the game. Simply the players didnt want to win the game enough. I dont blame Benitez for resting Alonso and from what I hear Garcia had a slight injury, but I do think he shouldnt have made so many changes to the squad. We were so its actually shocking, the entire team needs to take the blame for this loss. Its actually a joke at how bad we were.

Finnan 4 - Did well, despite being played out of position
Welsh 1 - Replace Gerrard? Partner Gerrard? your havin a laugh
Gerrard 5 - Fantastic defensively, nowhere in midfield.
La Tallec 2 - Two/three touches where bright. Worked hard.
Morientes 1 - 6million? Madrid are having a laugh

You're ignoring Benitez' record at Valencia then? As for 40 million, try about 25. I notice you also discount the 20 million Rafa has won in the CL this season. If you want to be negative that's your prerogative I suppose.

Not blaming him for the defeat having only watched bits of the game but is does feel like there is a gulf between himself and Alonso at the moment.

I'm including the £14 million on Cisse. Not many other clubs have spent £40 million since/including last summer. I think we got around 60 points last year. We spent £40 million and we're going to get about 60 points this year.

I think Rafa is the man for the job. Not being in the CL is a disaster though. It's like getting a Ferrari and running it on diesel. We get a top manager but then have no CL and no associated attracting power/money. Rafa may be good but he's isn't a fucking miracle worker.
