I haven't bought anything from Kanye since his second album but the reviews of this have tempted me. Funnily enough I was driving today with random albums playing, and the college dropout came on. I hadn't heard it for about three years but enjoyed hearing it again, a very good album.  I remember seeing Kanye in the apollo with Talib Kweli not long after that came out and it was a great concert. Having enjoyed it, I went to see him again in the NEC a year or two later and it was bollocks, obnoxious, all-style with no substance, which is what Late Registration was*. Still, maybe I will pick this up tomorrow and give it a chance.

* for the most part. I always thought "Gone" was a great song.

Late Registration and Graduation especially were a showcase of his obnoxiousness. But I like it for some reason. I think it's the sheer brilliance of the music and the tunes and sampling. There's the odd flow which is great, but the lyrics are almost a comedic sideshow to the brash sounds.

I wouldn't take him seriously in his music, otherwise you'd be pulling your hair out.

Bloody well love this.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hn3udAUlIqs&feature=related

Me too, but why is Chris Rock on it? I like that he is, but don't understand the purpose of it.

At the end of Kanye's bit, he says something about ringing the girl he's singing about, and her phone accidentally picks up, and he can hear her with Chris Rock.

EASILY the best song on the album, followed by Power then Runaway.

The above song is exceptional for modern day Hiphop though.

Yeah that's my favourite track on it too. Alicia Keys, Kid Cudi, Elton John, Rihanna and F e r g i e are all on it in places. The unfinished version was called Ghetto University which had Drake in it instead, and while I like Drake, I'm glad his part didn't make it, the album version is amazing.

Lost in the world is a classic fooking song.

Blame game is amazing, runaway is amazing... its just a musical masterpiece. I knew it would be, if it wasnt kanye west was over. and he will be only be over when he is ready, he is that good.

I hope he handles production on his album with Jay-Z and doesnt give all the production to Q-tip (no dig at qtip, i think he is sick, but he isnt kanye).

THIS ALBUM IS THE BEE'S KNEES.

I fully concur, it's immensely listenable.

"Things used to be, now they not
Anything but us is who we are
Disguising ourselves as secret lovers
We've become public enemies
We walk away like strangers in the street
Gone for eternity
We erased one another
So far from where we came
With so much of everything, how do we leave with nothing
Lack of visual empathy equates the meaning of L-O-V-E
Hatred and attitude tear us entirely
Let's play the blame game, I love you, more....."

Just my opinion of course but I think that lyrically it's outstanding.

p.s. f ergie's mya impression is more embarassing than that time she pissed herself on stage!

Illmatic and this album are completely different musically Slick_Beef. The context of either album is also different, as in the state of current hip-hop/music in general and also the stage of each artists career. I believe this album can stand along side Illmatic, not as a straight hip-hop album but just as an album in general.

More embarrassing than that Dirty Dancing thing that Black Eyed Peas have put out? I'd rather piss myself on stage than release that dogshit.

Production on this Kanye record is brilliant though, food for thought really.

In my opinion at the moment...

Monster
All of the Lights
Power

In that order are my three favourites... but I keep changing my mind.

I think they are the stand out tracks though.

Fair point mate. I always think that for an album to be given such good reviews it ought to be genre-defining, and if people think this is the case with this album, perhaps it's just not my type of genre.  As I said earlier though, I do still enjoy his first album, I would at least give his future albums a listen if he went more in that direction.

Bit off topic but yeah, with Illmatic, to think Nas was just 20 when it was released! And Pac and Biggie doing what they did by the time they died at 25 and 24! You don't get that in rap these days, the game has changed. :(

Kanye West randomly walked into a charity event yesterday and spent 90 min wrapping presents for kids. Love the holiday spirit

Not a complete prick so. In my opinion just says what he thinks, likes of Lady Gaga dont get half as much stick even though they couldnt be any more attention seeking and have probably never formed there own opinion on anything.

Clueless journos clutching at straws in this barren period for Hip-Hop.

At that time there was so much to be explored and the focus was on being lyrical. It was the golden age and its virtually impossible to see a return. Its all been done before.
