Radio city announcment
« on: March 14, 2007, 07:12:47 am »

Sorry mate, waited to hear this myself on the 8 o' clock news. Incredible if this comes off, how much longer we'll have to wait is another matter.

The club should now release a full detailed statement of exactly what these new plans mean, we shouldn't be kept in the dark any longer.

I'm not sure the delay will be massive. Surely it doesn't have to take the whole time taken all over again.

It's better to get it right now, and delay it, rather than build it hastily and regret it later.

I hope not, but surely it'll probably add another year onto the construction which isn't much considering the time its taken already. Imagine what 80,000 would have sounded like against barca. scary

If it was only the money holding us back from building a bigger stadium then it won't be a problem, if the friends of the blues ( sorry friends of the park ) rabble kick up a fuss, it could take forever.

I hope in the plans there is also extra provision for getting fans to and from the ground.

Imagine almost double the amount of people with an 80,000 stadium, compared with today.

If they are going to try for 80K then will the compromise be 70K if the council knock it back?

And, considering this alone signifies where G&T want to go...

Of course, the council will fuck the whole thing up, but it's nice to dream...

It wouldn't surprise me if we didn't see the game of bluff that LFC should have played originally going on over the next two months...

"let us build 80K"

"no"

"fine. We're taking our club to Kirkby then"

"errrmm can't we talk about this?"

"OK, 80,000"

"we can't do that"

"bye then"

"wait, we can let you build 70,000"

"that'll do nicely."

Apparently Hicks went mad when he saw the plans, said something along the lines of....if you've got 56,000 on a season ticket waiting list, why the fuck are you only build a 60,000 seater stadium!

By any stretch.

Send out 56,000 letters tomorrow morning, to everyone on that list, offering them a seasie, and you'd be lucky to get 10k uptake.

Anyone who believes anywhere near half of the "56,000" on the waiting list would take up the option of buying a season ticket, is quite frankly, a big fat mug.  :wave

I agree with you, but thats what the americans thought pattern was. Still reckon you'd get 50k season ticket holders if they had that many.

As long as there not too pricey obviously!

You'd get far more than 10K.  The list is clearly inflated by people who's circumstances may have changed and who are already sorted or no longer interested.  However the common knowledge of the size of the waiting list is also a deterrent to people putting their names down. I think you'd get quite a lot of new applications, especially from existing ST holders who want one additional seat next to their existing one.

I think I'm on the season ticket waiting list twice, so do not know how many other people are like that. I put my name on the list in 1999 i think, but have lost the letter and put it on the list again when I got fan card as there was a box you could tick when applying. Did this just in case as LFC do not keep you updated about whether your still on it or where abouts you are on it.

from the City website...

Stadium plans ripped up

The building work has barely begun, but Radio City can exclusively reveal plans for Liverpool’s new stadium could be yanked from the drawing board.

The Reds’ new owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett have ordered a thorough review of the ground.

The reason? They’re considering adding an extra 20,000 seats.

A meeting was held last night and it’s thought they now want to build an all-seater to outstrip Old Trafford.

A decision that is welcomed by Les Lawson from the Reds’ Official Supporters Club, he said: “It’s no use to go along with the stadium when it could be improved and made better.

“There’s exciting times ahead for Liverpool and Liverpool supporters, the future’s looking very good. The more people we can get in to see the Reds play the better.”

No firm decision has been made so far. But Dave Joyce, from construction firm JYM Partnership, who ran the rule over problems at the new Wembley, tells us inevitably this kind of move does lead to delay.

He told Radio City: “If a project initially has been designed to hold 60,000 and then they want to extend it to 80,000 that wouldn’t be a problem.

“But if the building was designed for only 60,000 then you have to start a redesign, go back to the planning applications so six-months extra would be minimum.

The big test would come in the second season.  There are planty of lucky ST holders at the moment who only go to the big (or Saturday) games and sell their ticket off for the rest of the season.  At the moment that works fine as people are desperate for tickets and will snap them up.

Move to 80,000 capacity and if anyone wants to go to 90% of the games they will be able to pitch up and go, own ticket own loyalty.  This will obviously leave ST holders above seriously out of pocket.  I wonder how many will renew?

80,000 is very fucking ambitious.

In most games there would be thousands of empty seasts, would make for a really fantastically intimidating atmosphere for the oppositioon wouldn't it? Won't a delay fuck up all kinds of grants from Europe and elsewhere too?

Having said that, the current desing is very uninspiring. If we're going to leave the greatest football ground in the world, lets do it properly.

But I'm sure they would all want a ST anyway & the guarantee that it offers.

Think people are missing the main point that hardly any kids can get to the league games, these will be the people who fill the ground when we are all to old & can't be arsed.

At the moment my 13 year old nephew has never been to a league game, he's only been to CC & C/L games, At his age I'd been to at Least 3 or 4 Man U & Derby games, these are the type of games that really get you hooked on your team.

If we don't fill a proposed new 80k stadium regularly at least everyone will have the opportunity.

doubt it. can't imagine us getting 80,000 for 12.45pm or midweek kick-offs against the likes of wigan/fulham/villa/sheff utd.  a half-empty stadium would seriously affect the atmosphere.

To be fair. If you are using those sort of home league games as the benchmark there ain't a lot of atmosphere to lose anyway. The empty spaces would all be in the upper tier if tickets are sold sensibly and should be more than compensated for atmosphere wise by groups of mates getting in and sitting together.

As anyone who was at Auxerre will tell you - empty seats don't necessarily kill the atmosphere.  Any threat to the atmosphere will be from the number and location of corporate seats.  Compare and contrast:  Anfield last week, big European game, Kop 90% full well before KO and a great atmosphere brewing.  Emirates last week, big European game kicks off to a half empty stadium as half the crowd finish their canapes and sauvignon blanc.

If Newcastle can fill 50,000+ for all league game, Arsenal oversubscribed at 60,000, United full at 75,000 every week - then why is 80,000 too ambitious?

We have one of the biggest fanbases in world football.

Just issue 65,000-70,000 Season Tickets, they'd be snapped up and would pretty much guarentee a full house every week.

For midweek games, Season Ticket holders have already paid so will go. For league cup games and FA Cup games etc - we wouldn't recieve 60,000 tickets for the final or the semi, so loyalty would be required. People would be afraid to miss a game incase they miss out on the finals etc. It would ensure a decent attandance for these games - the proof is in the pudding since the fan cards were introduced. Anfield is always full.

Reasonable ticket prices for the cup games and no problem at all, we'd fill it.

No doubt they would but the problem is that they'd just be going on a seasie rather than another ticket, they don't necessarily help too much in finding the 35k extra people who want to go week in week out
