I have seen great bits of play from him and lovely passing and he is an intelligent player. My concern is his lack of physical strength and pace. As a result he sometimes has quiet spells, but is definitely right up there in ability terms and I hope he can make that count for him.

Looks like Liverpool have signed a 16 year old defender from Lyon. One to watch out for in the 18's. Let's hope he's as talented as Ki-Jana Hoever!

Interesting.  We clearly use advanced analytics when signing 1st team players.  I wonder how much we use analytics when looking at youth players and how much is traditional scouting.

I think we signed Djimi Traore around this age and Houllier said he was potentially world class.  This lad could be but there was a real fanfare when we got Ki-Jana

Sadly, Houllier's record in that department was a bit disappointing.

I find it difficult to believe there's enough consistent data to really use analytics at the youth level.

Great write-up, very informative and some really good details.

I think Clarkson is having a really good season, think he’s been the pick of the bunch in midfield for the under-18’s so far - expected that to be Dixon-Bonner in truth but Clarkson kicked on impressively.

Might be worth you posting this in the academy thread too, posts like this would be great for people who don’t see much of the games but might be interested in the players coming through.

I never really get to watch the U23s anymore, how has Tagseth been doing (if he has moved up to U23 level)? Last time I saw him playing was for Gerrards U18s and he stood out significantly every time I saw him play, looked a really intellgent player

I used to work with Leighton's mother.

Although to be fair, I'm not sure that's adding much to the debate.

Great post OP.

He certainly does look promising, however you have to be really special to be that kind of player and make it at the top level. The odds are against you with the physical aspect being so important.

Looking forward to monitoring his progress.

Thanks OP for the post by the way, I have never seen this kid myself but always feel optimistic when I hear good stories from the Academy lot, fingers crossed for a bright future for this lad.

That’s the definition of a shop window team.

Hopefully a few of them take the opportunity tonight, the likes of Randall and Markovic really need get back to playing first-team football elsewhere.

Masterson always impresses has good positional sense. Sharif and Markovich have been the standouts. Randall should have scored before halftime.

Really hope he gets himself a move this month, think he's got enough to have a good career in the football league.

Joe Rafferty went to Rochdale a couple of seasons ago, has done well there and now earned himself a move to Preston in the Championship.  Hopefully Randall can do similar, he just needs regular football somewhere.

He has always had a really professional attitude Randall even when he was very young, it would be nice to see him get a good move. Swansea have upped the pressure, George has made a number of good saves in the secon half.

2-0 to Liverpool, Glenn McAuley the scorer but it was made by Sharif a brilliant run by the young lad, after a lot of Swansea pressure. Duncan on for Markovich, let's see what he can do.

Agree completely. I saw it was a free month, signed on assuming it was a free trial (I know more fool me) and was then told the first month was free if I signed for a year, so scrubbed it.

I subscribe to LFCTV but Mrs P pays so won't be cancelling just yet.

Standard red card in this fixture, Morgan Boyes.  We're playing the last half an hour with 10.

And it's 2-1 from the resulting free-kick.

Flicked on the highlights of the most recent U23 game. Really surprised by some of the players turning out.

Matty Virtue, Juanma and Chirivella are into their 20s now. They're never going to play for Liverpool, in fact they'll probably never even be regulars for a top division club. As for Randall and Markovic, they're not even under 23!

The whole competition (the U23 league) seems like a massive waste of time. All of the lads playing in it would be better off playing lower league football in games that actually matter, and trying to create a proper career for themselves before it's too late.

Anyone who Klopp sees as having a slight chance of making the step up (Hoever, Jones, Camacho, Woodburn etc) are whipped straight up to train at Melwood, and even most of them probably won't go on to make much of an impact for the first team if we're realistic.

Nothing personal against any of these lads obviously, they're brilliant footballers with a chance to have careers in the game. But what is the fucking point of the U23 league?
