Well I'm not sure how you do an Aquaman movie without him being (the son of) a water God with a magic weapon who goes on the heroes journey. With muscles. Like where's the room to do anything different in there?
Yes, I think the similarity to Thor seems to come as much from the tone as all that, though. And making a slightly-jokey Aquaman movie makes more sense than doing it with Thor did, really. The original Thor is an ass-kicking Thunder God, where Aquaman has always been a slightly silly premise.
For me, it's going to be impossible to top the Brave and the Bold episode where he goes on a family vacation. That's the definitive Aquaman story in my mind now.
