Villa supporting mate at work is realistic enough to know they won't win the title but still couldn't help declaring earlier this week they'd be top of the league Friday night. Didn't want to spoil it for him, but I did think he may regret it, knowing from our own experience from the last 20 years how being top or having a game that will send you top can trigger some unexpected disappointments. Their season is mirroring ours... lots of late winners, a recent 2-1 away win that had been shaping as a loss before an opponent got himself sent off in the 70-something-th minute, a long home winning streak ended by the worst team in the league/world...

I always thought one of the things that contributed to Leicester's title is that every club bizarrely still played them as Leicester rather than title contenders, which massively played into their hands.

Aston Villa have been an exciting side this season. Probably overachieving, and now perhaps reverting back a bit, but you never know. If they can regroup they can still finish ahead of Man Utd and stave them off and get CL football. The trajectory isn't good, but there's still a five point gap there beneath them, and Villa have everything to play for.

I'd much rather they got the last CL spot than Man Utd or Newcastle (I'm assuming the top four will be, in no particular order, Liverpool, Man City, Arsenal and Spurs, but nothing is cast in stone).

They serve a role (like Brighton/Spurs/West Ham) as teams who can keep Newcastle out of europe and United out of the CL, nothing more really (except I hope they are useless when we go to Villa Park, but decent at Abu Dhabi)

My Villa supporting mates (buggered if I know why there's so many down here) seem pretty philosophical about their current form, saying that they're still playing well but just not getting some of the breaks they got earlier. They talk about MU overtaking them as an expected formality, which is kind of annoying because we can see they are crap, but I guess we all grew up with an unstoppable MU so it's hard to get past. Hope it's not a self fulfilling prophecy. I don't mind the Villa as far as oppo clubs go, would gladly see them take 4th ahead of Spurs.
