Currently driving an 04 mk5 golf and am due to start a new job on Tuesday offering a car allowance or car and a fuel card. I pay about £900 for insurance at the moment and I am seriously contemplating going down the company car route just so I can be Billy 'new car'. The only thing that stops me is that My balance would definitely be healthier with the allowance than the car.
The way I see it:
Allowance  (salary + allowance + fuel) subject to tax. - (car + depreciation + maintenance + insurance)
Vs
Car           (Salary subject to tax) - (yearly car value subject to tax)

Just writing this up to consolidate my thoughts and with a faint hope that someone is going through the same dilemma.

Without trying to sound smart, surely your mate would be able to tell you this?

23mpg sounds pretty good for a 13 year 2.8 that she 'drives like a lunatic'.

If you do 100 miles a week it will cost you about 20 quid.
13mins - Bournemouth have gone home. Utd kicked off anyway. Still 0-0 as Smalling passes it back to De Gea.

This isn't about my car.......

Does anyone know what Brendan drives?  I'll explain.  Leaving Portsmouth last Sunday evening at about half eight I was left standing at successive traffic lights by a dark grey BMW with blacked out windows all round and a number plate which read BC55 LFC (with the fixing screw in the gap in the C to make it look like an O) and on the left where there is often the european/english/welsh/scottish flag there was a liverbird with writing around too small for me to read.  Any ideas anyone?

He was given a Porsche Panamera by the club when he joined, not sure if he still has it or not.

I doubt he'd have that number plate though either way.

I've seen BC55 CFC driving about (a gold Bentley) on the M4, which I assume is Maureen.

Had a 3Speed a few years ago, was an excellent car, very good handling for a smaller car with a good bit of umph behind it.  Alas, it got destroyed in an accident.

I've got a 2001 corsa and one of the cylinders is misfiring. I've taken it into the garage and after looking into it they've said they suspect the valve(s?) are either burnt or broken.

So they said they'd need to strip down the engine to replace the valves or the other option is would be to get a whole new engine? Both situations at the cost of 'a few hundred pounds'.

Not sure what to do now at all, just need the car back on the road asap.

If anyone has got any advice/experience it would be much appreciated.

You'd also think someone with money would get a proper plate and not try and make something be something its not - that plate doesn't say BOSS its BC55.

Anyone have much experience with leasing cars. Just started looking into it and there are loads of different sites offering different deals.

I'm thinking of a Mercedes C Class which seems reasonable compared to BMW 3 and Audi

Can anyone recommend one or recommend ones to avoid? I'd probably be looking to do a personal one rather than put it through business to avoid any benefit in kind taxes.

Also when leasing cars how much say do you get in the spec of the car - dont want all the options but be nice to get a few but cant see any of that info on the sites.

Tha Father in law offered to buy us a brand new car last week as he's just bought her brother one - we've got an '06 Astra with under 51,000 on it that does under 4k a year and has just breezed through its MOT so my wife said thanks, but we really dont need a new car, but we've been replacing the double glazing as we really need new windows and doors so we're getting them instead. To her a car is just a car, so long as it starts every morning and doesn't break down thats all she cares about.

to be honest, even if we had needed a car I wouldn't have had a new one, I'd have got a 10-12 month old one and let someone else take the initial depreciation hit.

Been great....

Just make sure your mileage is realistic so you don't get a huge excess bill at the end of the lease....

To be honest my last audi they agreed a settlement price over the phone with me without even seeing it.

They asked if it was in good nick, I said yes and they were happy.  They didn't actually see it until I'd signed all the documents for the new car and had driven off in it.

I think the best thing is to go to a branch with a good reputation.

Have you decided on your spec yet?

Alfa Romeo 159 TI (super important) 2.0 JTDm 16v 170bhp

I have a 156 1.9 JTD Turismo mate but it's old now, have wanted a 159 ever since seeing one on the road. Think I'd get a black or that sort of charcoal grey type colour.
Not a fan of red cars myself but each to their own, anyway it's a beauty, enjoy it!
It's true to say that if Shankly had told us to invade Poland we'd be queuing up 10 deep all the way from Anfield to the Pier Head.

Picked up my Seat Leon FR on Thursday. It's the version with Active Cylinder Technology, which switches off two of the four cylinders when not accelerating, thus cutting fuel consumption. I got 56.9 MPG on my 12 mile commute to work yesterday driving sedately on a mix of roads and 47.8 after a more spirited drive home in sport mode. Pretty impressive stuff for a turbocharged petrol engine.

Not sure I'd pay the significant premium that comes with this car's VW/Audi stablemates again (I used to drive a Scirocco too). It's as good, if not better in many areas.

My Saab, a 57 plate, cost 4.5k for a 55k miler. Its leathers seats and electric everything, airbags everywhere. Ive had it 18mnths now and it went through the MOT cleanly. My previous was another 2nd hand Saab 900. Built like a tank. Had that since 33k miles and took it to 180k miles before I got the dead sea scrolls MOT and though fuck it, new car. Saabs are pretty good cars. Solid and reliable. I see little point in buying a new car and pissing away the depreciation when you can pick up good deals on a 2nd hand motor.

Bikes are my thing. I will buy a brand new bike and a 1299S Ducati will replace my 1198 later on this year.
