Saw Poor Things tonight which I thought was amazing, don't think Emma Stone has even been better. An absolute tour de force from her. Best thing Mark Ruffalo has done in ages as well.

Here's a random one. I have a scene from a film in my head and I can't work out where it's from. A real long shot but I know we have some on here with incredible knowledge.

All I remember is that a married woman meets some teenage boys outside a cafe, and one of them begins chatting her up. Then she gets a lift with them on a scooter to a party. When she gets to this party at a random bar, she suddenly loses interest in the whole thing and she leaves to walk home. I think she then sees her husband on the way home, he pulls up in a car.

I think this is a fairly recent movie. I'd be surprised if it was more than five years ago.

The boys on scooters/motorbikes makes me think it was set in Europe. It was also a sunny day I think.

Did you ask this on Reddit? Just tried to find out by typing in the words and it came up 🤣

I saw it last Thursday - I thought it was a perfectly serviceable, cheesy 80s/90s action films, with a lot of learnings from Bourne and John Wick -  a solid 6/10.  The first 45-60 mins were maybe even a 7/10, but the ending definitely is not as good, thus the 6/10 rating.  In fact, it might be my favourite Jason Statham film since Transporter 2, if not Collateral.  Definitely better than Crank, all the fast and furious films, and I prefer it to the Expendables 1+2
He's rubbish.

I’ve tried to think back through everything I’ve watched in the last year and nothing comes to mind. Really starting to think it’s a TV show or something.

Saw 'Poor Things'

Er. Absolutely batshit.

Mad story, great sets, great (if bonkers) story and great acting.

Actually pretty funny too with the whole cinema laughing their heads off throughout - some great lines and one liners and general premises..

Er..

7.8 / 10.2

Society of The Snow about the Uruguyan rugby team that crashed in the Andes. Brand new on Netflix and a very good watch. Really gripping story.

This was incredible I thought. Amazing story but it was really well made. Probably my favourite Netflix/streamer film I've seen. Would have loved to see it on the big screen, I was fully absorbed.

The Royal Hotel
2 travelling "Canadian" girls take a job at a remote hotel in the Oz outback. Not much happens - it's a bit of a slow burn building up tensions between the girls and the rough customers until it just fizzles out.

Good movie. Watched it back to back with the documentary. Really interesting insight into the culture clash of booze culture. The maddest thing was the British bar staff that stayed for a 2 week holiday at the end of their stint  ;D

Poor Things is a work of art ruddered by a brilliant central performance (that probably won't win an Oscar) and helmed by one of the best directors around. Production design and costumes are marvellous too. Not sure it's a brilliant film though, most of the other performances are cartoons and the plot is essentially a straight line. But Stone and Lanthimos deserve all the plaudits.

Spoiler
One juxtaposition I thought was interesting however, is that the film positions itself as a feminist fairytale while being centred on a lead character who's all selfishness, with seemingly no empathy for the people around her or a shred of concern for the consequences of her behaviour. At any point in the film.

In general, it gets around this by making the people surrounding Bella malevolent but (with one exception) ultimately hapless. Her existence and emotions are the film, theirs are either laughable or just irrelevant. Even her feelings for the people dying in poverty are driven by the idea of their suffering and how seeing it made her miserable. They're just a faceless metaphor. By the end of the movie, any notions about socialism or saving the world have been long forgotten, having given way to sitting in the garden of a big house sipping cocktails and reading. I don't think I'd be able to paint a more scathingly misogynistic portrait of western feminism if I tried.

Thought it was good, very weird like, the Prescot accent was decent

Spoiler
that was a shock when his parents are in a lovely house on St. Helen’s Road  ;D

It was very good. I'd say Grant and Pike are brilliant in it, definitely bringing the brevity needed around some very disturbing scenes.

The accent was OK. I felt it was a little "wirral" at times and on a few occasions it took me out as you could clearly hear Keoghan is from Dublin.

I remember seeing a trailer for it (probably at Killers of the Flower Moon) and it not really being the film I'd seen in the trailer (in a good way)

Went to see Mean Girls last night as I am a huge fan of the original, and really like several of the songs on the Broadway musical's soundtrack.  It did a decent job of adapting the musical for the screen, although 1 or 2 of the songs that were dropped I was disappointed with not seeing.  Renee Rapp as Regina George (a role she played on Broadway as well) was really great, as was Auli'i Cravalho as Janis; but Angourice Rice was a real weak point as Cady.  The adult cast was well cast (always, always a pleasure to see Tim Meadows, of course).

A solid 6.5/10, for me - should have been a 7 but I have to dock a half mark because Cady was so outclassed by the rest of the cast.

On another note, I've only just found out that they are making a Minecraft movie, and boy the cast is *STACKED*.  Jack Black, Matt Berry, Jason Momoa, Kate McKinnon, Jennifer Coolidge, Jermaine Clement is way overkill for a movie about Minecraft!

without knowing you or them, i'd say trust your instinct! you might hate it, especially if they have previous with recommendations.

it won't do you any harm and isnt too long, but it's definitely not a great film - you might be able to have good chat about it with those people i guess (even if it's 'i hated it because...'. - but wouldn't say it's 'must watch'

There are moments of greatness in Saltburn and it’s well made and performed,  but it is not the sum of its parts.  Without the controversial moments it’s quite forgettable, it’s not as good as Promising Young Woman in my opinion.

The Beekeeper

Not the best film, but I love the idea that scammers are getting blown up

Disappointingly, he let the actual scammers go and pretty much only killed the security guys. Would have liked to have seen a lot more of the scammers get blown up, shot and exploded through glass doors and walls, but hey ho. Hopefully Beekeeper II will show a lot more scammers getting blown to pieces.

The Holdovers. Absolutely wonderful and right up there with Sideways as Alexander Payne’s best. Could see Giamatti and Joy Randolph winning Oscars for it. Production design is beautiful too. At times it felt like I was watching an old 70s film.

Also saw wonka this weekend. Disappointing after seeing so much positivity around it. The new songs are weak and I found myself pretty bored early on. Good acting turns from Coleman and Grant and some nice set design but otherwise fairly forgettable. Definitely not a patch on Paddington.

And what was with the accents? Set in a weird faux English city with some people having broad American accents for absolutely no reason - noodle being the most perplexing given she’s raised by two English people. And the New York cop.

Not seen The Holdovers yet, cineworld claiming its on a limited release. So will see if it's scheduled from next Friday or I'll go somewhere else to see it.

I did see the new Jodie Comer film, The End We Start From, which I enjoyed.

Stumbled into 'John Carpenter's They Live' (1988) yesterday. What a fantastic piece of art. The fight scene between Keith David & Roddy Piper is epic.

It's funny how the anti-corporate message of They Live, was wrongly interpreted by the right wing in the US, as some sort of a message to read between the lines and fight the global agenda! Either way, fantastic movie.

Saw an advance screening of "The Zone of Interest" tonight at my local light. Incredible. Struggle to remember a better film at showing the banality of evil. Not my favourite of the 6 films I've seen so far this year (that would be Poor Things) but incredible nonetheless.

15.99 so far this month has been very well spent. Hopefully all of us strangers, and the holdovers will be shown there soon.
