Bayern have hit the malaise Juve did from domestic hegemony. They've won 11 titles in a row and most of them at a canter. They're not kept on their toes.

Leverkusen might stop them this season but Alonso will go in the summer and the team will break up. Leverkusen are not a big club. Dortmund (who should be one of the top clubs) have a business model of mostly buying young players to develop and sell.

Gyokeres has been superb for Sporting, scores tons but gets assists too, should do well off him in 18 months.

Not sure who our ideal opponents would be from these sides because we can't play a fellow group winner in the next round. If they can get past Benfica I'd take Toulouse again considering we were comfortable at Anfield with a changed team, but I'd fancy Benfica to do them. Winner of Braga/Qarabag perhaps but travel to Azerbaijan not ideal and Braga are actually a capable side. If Shakthar Donetsk beat Marseille I'd take them considering they're still playing their European homes in Hamburg (I think)

Branco van den Boomen has just scored a penalty to give Ajax some hope for the 2nd leg. What a name that is.

Felt for the defender who got sent off in the Benfica v Toulouse game - the first yellow was ridiculous, and if a yellow was deserved it should have been for the diving by the Benfica player.

Having said that, any sympathy for Toulouse has to be tempered - their manager’s a little prick.
