Anyway, transfers!

Does anyone think they may hold off selling Nat till the very end of the window? (If he is sold at all of course).

There will be 3 league games I think before the window closes, with Gomez and Virgil maybe not being quite ready, would they just hang on to Nat. Or too much of a risk in case interested teams move on?

Just wondering really, cos they pulled him out of the first friendly which suggested something may be close, but then he played vs Mainz. I suppose we’ll see if he carries on playing the next friendlies.

It's a valid question IMO and I see both sides. Matip + Konate at least gives us a pretty formidable CB pairing for opening day and assuming no setbacks, VVD should be at least fit enough for the bench if he's in contention for the next friendly. Wouldn't surprise me if Gomez is fit enough for the bench too by the time the 14th rolls around.

as it stands a top 4 finish is the best case with our squad as I see it

I wouldn’t say we are title favourites but we go into the season as one of 2-4 teams who can realistically expect to challenge for the title. With the CL it’s probably 1 of 5-7 teams. We have a competitive squad but one where we have a few Q marks. But so does every squad in current football and every squad that’s ever been put together. It’s how teams manage those gaps and a bit of luck that helps.

I’d like an addition in midfield and up front. Realistically though they'll be back ups. That’s based on quality of our current players and cost to improve on them. I’d say a5th choice forward and 4th in line CM improves our chances of landing a big prize by 5-10% at max.

That’s why I can’t get to worried about it. It’s certainly not about this……

Perhaps you are happy with a top 4 finish? Not everyone gets a horrible feeling in their stomach when they see another team above us at the end of the season or lifting the Champions league and that’s okay

To suggest that your desire for signings equates to you wanting to win more than others fans is a bit over the top. Some would say offensive. Whatever it is, its misguided and complete nonsense at best
I think Jookie might just be the best fisherman on this thread.

I think our squad is good enough to win the league now.

We won the title 2 years ago at a canter.  Since then we've added Jota, Thiago, Tsimikas, Konate & seen Jones / Elliott both emerge.  Only really losing Gini.

That doesn't mean I wouldn't welcome additions.  As a fan I'd love a Saul or Raphinha type buy(s).

But I personally think if we do sign anyone at the moment the squad probably need a back up right back more than anything.  The drop off from Trent to the replacement(s) is huge.

Think we'll always need some luck during any season,we can't 'make sure' like some with a squad full of £40-60m signings.

I think i prefer it that way to be honest.

Is this misinformation still a thing?  Sure, Klopp wanted a defender (and I would argue that it wasn't just Klopp given that we knew that both VVD and Joe were out for the rest of the season) but ,3 days before the end of the transfer window, Matip was still injury free. (He came off at HT when we played Spurs.) I'm sure the team gambled on us getting through the window with Matip, Fabinho, Hendo, Phillips and Williams knowing that they had already earmarked Konate. They couldn't get him because RBL would not let him go. But Matip's injury forced our hand and we were able to get Kabak in on loan.  It's obvious Kabak was never our primary target mainly because there was no obligation to buy even at (just) £18m.

The recruitment team actually did a fantastic job in ensuring that we had some reinforcements (for a princely sum of £2.5m) even though it wasn't an ideal situation.

The timing is what hurt us, why wasnt there someone ready to join 1st week of Jan? Matip is arguably our second best central defender but we know he’s not durable

If you make enough bad puns in the transfer thread, you get punished with bad signings. It’s Joe Cole’s law.

So a few more of them and we might see Sarr coming to Liverpool?

I know there's been some discussion about the market and whether or not it's depressed or if there's been any changes one way or another in spend. The Athletic did a piece this morning that I think convincingly shows that there is quite a bit less spend this summer compared to previous summers and that Covid has taken a major toll on the market:

While the PL is still greatly outspending the other top five leaves, over £800 million in transfer fees will have to be spent in the remaining 5 weeks to equal last summer's spend. Some combination of Kane/Grealish/Haaland moving would go a ways towards moving the needle, but I highly doubt the league comes close to the norm in terms of spending.

The more interesting question, for me at least, now is how long will this last?  I was of the opinion that things would return to normal by next summer but now I'm not so sure.  There's a growing possibility that there's never 100% attendance allowed in a lot of the leagues for the entirety of next year.  So what was a hopeful blip in income drop is now a long term trend when you combine it with TV income that in the best case is just staying at the same level.  Could be summer of 2023 before we see transfer spending meet or exceed pre-Covid levels.

One side effect of this though is it should prolong the life cycle of the PL's European dominance.  As we're fans of one of those teams at the top the odds of winning something on the continent is pretty significant these days even if ManC make a mockery of the league, though lets hope it doesn't come to that.

Exactly. It’s dead easy to do in Footy Manager so why the fuck wasn’t it done in real life. I mean the fucking people involved in transfers at this club deserve no benefit of the doubt as to why things are/aren’t done, so why the fuck wasn’t it.

Fucking layabouts.

Why didn’t we go out and sign 2 starting central defenders of the quality of Gomez and VVD so we could maintain the levels of the season before? And another captain whilst we were at it because he was out too.

Yes the same side that has one player who come through it’s academy and the rest are all transfers?

If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

I think if Van Dijk is still the same player and stays fit, if Mane recovers his form, if Hendo stays fir and Bobby is pretty consistent then we will compete.
Like you I would still like a couple of additions otherwise I think we are giving ourselves too much to do over the next year or two.
I am hopeful though that they will bring in those additions and this is all the messages are just a ploy to keep prices down of potential purchases.

Yeah, I think he will move late once they know how Virgil and Joe are getting on. I cannot see them allowing themselves to get anywhere near like the situation from last year.

I’m not sure if waiting until end of Aug really gives too much of an indication if either will suffer longer term layoffs again. Although would mitigate for it for a little while I suppose.

Personally I expect those clubs interested in him will want someone in sooner rather than later, esp if it’s a starter they are after (which it is). So not sure it would be too wise to wait.

I do t think it is that easy, everyone knew we needed a centre half.
My issue at the time was more that it was widely reported that a move was only approved/sanctioned once Matip got injured. Stevie Wonder could see that Matip was never going to last! By the time he did completely break it was really really late in the window.

I agree that clubs will want him in sooner rather than later and probably won't wait. I was only pondering whether the risk of re injury is most likely to occur when they start playing in contact i.e. The next month? Maybe it doesn't make a difference, I am not a physio so don't know

No. If there's one thing any of us can most confidently say from last season is that Jurgen Klopp 100% definitely was not getting fired if the season went to shit. Not a fucking chance, not unless FSG and those running the club actually wanted to piss off every single supporter.

Depends on what type of evidence you are looking for Craig doesn’t it? there was a direct quote from Klopp saying he’s not going to cry if we don’t sign a defender in the last 10 days of the transfer window

I want actual proof over some random quote you can spin either way to suit your agenda.

And let’s be honest. There is none.

Even wondered if they may sell Davies and Phillips and bring in Kabak if his value dropped to say £6m.
Each of our 4 centre halves have a level of risk and we are basically aggregating up that all of those risks won't occur, which is a reasonable position to take but if Kabak becomes super cheap maybe they will take that insurance policy.

The timing is what hurt us, why wasnt there someone ready to join 1st week of Jan? Matip is arguably our second best central defender but we know he’s not durable

Everyone and their dog knew we were desperate for a centre half. Even Schalke, who are in a disastrous financial shape, were trying to have us over a barrel for Kabak at the start of the window. They were still asking for 20 million, with a loan considered a non-starter. By the time a deal was done it was a 2 million loan fee with option to buy, and this summer they're shopping him around at 8 million. Unfortunately bad injury luck put us in the weakest possible negotiating position, and we had to wait for the end of the window for cash-strapped clubs like Schalke and Marseille (Caleta-Car) to get antsy and lower their demands.

To me this is about two things

-Honesty - where do we really stand and what is a realistic expectation?
-Accountability- Is the club providing the resources Klopp needs to be successful?

I would rather see us all enjoy the season and win rather than spend the next 9 months convincing people that the manager wasn’t provided with the resources he needs to compete

Klopp will be gone in a few years, we can back him while he’s here because he’s earned it and perhaps win a few more trophies or we go into next season with a realistic expectation, as it stands a top 4 finish is the best case with our squad as I see it- perhaps you think having more options in defence is all we need but as I see it the midfield lacks goals and we don’t have enough competition for places upfront

Perhaps you are happy with a top 4 finish? Not everyone gets a horrible feeling in their stomach when they see another team above us at the end of the season or lifting the Champions league and that’s okay

I agree.
1st is in the top 4 after all.

We were 1 xG worse than ManC in attack but 14 xG worse in defense.  Having healthy first choice CB's can close the gap.  I say "can" because there's no guarantee that it will since they are all returning from injury and who knows what their level is now but to say "top 4 is best case" is complete bullshit.

Kabak already became super cheap and we turned him down.
Yes but that is what he was offered at, if they think his price will drop even lower then I wouldn't think they would do that deal even if they wanted him.
They may need all the money from the Phillips sale for other transfers but if Kabak was available for say £5m it may be worth it.
Knows our system, covers a risk, probably wont kick up a fuss about not playing lots, potential good resale value. You at least make your money back next summer even if he only plays a bit.

Nah. He ultimately doesn’t fit our system, regardless of if he knows it or not, as he just doesn’t have the pace to play it.
