So when the government says it has the ability to track and trace 10,000, that’s woefully inadequate then....

Depends on timescale and what's meant? (I've not seen that number so any link appreciated.) 10k people per day at, say, 30 people per new case means c.350 new cases per day and more and we're likely going to be struggling. If it's 10k new cases per day and 300k people then that's more than plenty cos new cases per day ought to be coming down well below that. (Edit: more than plenty to be getting on with anyways, may well be a point that it's overwhelmed again - Singapore needing to increase restrictions in spite of an enormous effort to track and trace would seem to point to that.)

Finding the current rules, guidance, and ethical concerns & opinions a bit confusing, I must admit, and last week in particular seemed quite the mindf***.

I live just by Penny Lane - I've been supporting our local pizza Parlour with a visit every other weekend during this period, and have felt happy & comfortable to do so.  Noticed that Bean There coffee shop is open for takeaway coffee and snacks this week - they've got a Perspex screen partially covering the doorway and are trading hatch-style.  I also notice that popular, reputable, local indie Maray have opened for takeaway orders too, and today they've been on social media saying they're serving beers from the door on Allerton Road.

What's the latest on stuff like this?

Johnson looked rough as a bears arse.

Trying to sneer at Starmer with the Forensic jibe

Also noticed before the speaker shut Hancock up, Starmer was interrupted by either Hancock or Johnson With an “untrue, untrue”. And Starmer calmly repeated that it was evidence to parliament by the head of care UK.
That’s why Hancock had a right fucking gob on him and Hoyle slapped him down right after.

No wonder that Mogg is moving heaven and earth to get the shitheads back together to howl don questions and roar with laughter at insults.
It's doing the Tories head in, they have had 5yrs of getting away with cheering bullshit to bat off all criticism, the patriotic get behind the country bulls.. isn't working with Starmer. Johnsons gob dropped after hearing Starmers reply to him saying he doesn't like his negative tone.  Starmer looked at him appalled for a few secs, there has been over 30.000 deaths, that is a negative, of course am going to ask you questions on this and quiet right as well.

I got the impression of suppressed anger at that point from Starmer.
His legal life has given him the ability to coldly and calmly respond to denials etc. but I thought I saw a flicker of absolute rage when the scruffy get was whining about positivity. It was quickly controlled, but there was real anger along the lines of “you cheeky bastard how dare you.”

Footballers are hardly a representative sample of the population. It disproportianately affects poorer people rememeber.

Against that, 'professional footballers' is a group which leans heavily to men under the age of 30 who are least likely to follow guidance on social distancing and tend to socialise a lot more than some other parts of the population. So would suggest chances of catching it may be higher than for a nan who goes to the shops once a week or whatever and isn't even seeing a grandkids but for waving to them at bottom of garden path.

Good luck with the application PeterJM.

Easy decision for Cambridge to make. Their prestige means people won't turn down offers there or realistically defer. They also have fucking billions in reserves of various means so they're fine. Other Universities are buggared by this. I work closely with a major ex-Poly and they could quite feasibly go bankrupt with the predicted drop in student numbers. The impact on an economy of a medium sized city with a University in it would be absolutely enormous.

Also who the fuck is this guy doing the briefing today. Can't be long until fucking Larry the cat is doing them?

Nothing's changed yet. Takeaways are absolutely fine. I've been buying from Lunya and their delis are now back open for takeaway service and collections.

1st June is planned date to begin opening non-essential shops. And then 4th July is earliest government reckon they'll be doing pilots for reopening pubs/restaurants/hairdressers and stuff like that.

You could really tell from Johnsons 'strategy' that Starmer has had him thoroughly rattled since the last PMQs. Can't say that I'm looking forward to the return of the Tory backbenchers, and Starmer might just struggle to make himself heard above the mindless jeering. You just have to hope the Tory's at least retain enough self-awareness as to not want to revert to their public heckling jeering in the midst of a crisis. But I doubt it. Makes me a little bit sick just thinking about it to be honest.
I remember watching the commons the other day and how calm it is and you can actually digest the answers from the people, normally it's just screaming and shouting at everything and it questions whether change is needed

BBC are reporting the PM has promised world class track and trace system by June

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/coronavirus-nhs-x-app-launch-contact-trace-scheme-uk-a9524191.html

Independent saying they are backpedaling from that, as the app will not be ready.

Johnson has lied to Parliament again, the scruffy twat.
Surely this time Starmer must demand he be recalled.

Tell you now. This track trace and test strategy is 2months too late and will not get off the ground. They are going to blame the lack of common sense, and the “science”, and the Brexiteers will cheer their Boris as they bury their dead.

To paraphrase Sassoon

“He’s not a bad chap said Harry to Jack
As they downloaded their app in order to track
But he did for us all and expected a clap”

Yep. The app will go the same way as other major IT projects. It'll be too late, over budget, and not work. And then it will be shelved. We'll have treatments and a vaccine before a good track and trace system. And the pandemic will be over.

New serology study by Sweden's Public Health Authority has it about 7% of Stockholm's population, 4% elsewhere tested, had had it by earlyish-April. Also interesting is that over-65s were noticeably different to rest of adult population. (Paper's in Swedish - google translate.)

Quote
The Public Health Authority has launched a survey to measure and estimate how many in the community have had covid-19. Blood samples are collected from laboratories in clinical chemistry and clinical immunology in nine regions: Jämtland, Jönköping, Kalmar, Skåne, Stockholm, Uppsala, Västerbotten, Västra Götaland and Örebro.

The collection takes place during eight weeks in the spring of 2020. A total of 1,200 samples are collected each week for analysis of antibodies. Antibodies show that the immune system recognizes the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The analyzes for week 18 (a total of 1,104 analyzed samples) show, as expected, the largest proportion of positive antibody tests in Stockholm. A total of 7.3 percent of the blood samples collected from people in Stockholm were positive in the antibody study, which can be compared with a total of 4.2 percent in Skåne and 3.7 percent in Västra Götaland.

The numbers reflect the state of the epidemic earlier in April, as it takes a few weeks for the body's immune system to develop antibodies.

Regarding age differences, the results show that covid-19 antibodies were most common among people between 20 and 64 years. In total, 6.7 percent of the samples in this group were positive, which can be compared with 4.7 percent in the age group 0-19 years and 2.7 percent in the age group 65-70 years.

Yes that is true, much like the theory on why so many celebrities were catching it earlier on. There are reasons both for and against a footballer being more or less likely to get it than average. Point is I wouldn't read too much into extrapolations from it.

If we look at the rate of infection on footballers, it tells us that there about half a million active infections in the uk outside of care homes (presumably higher?).

Is my maths right?

Yeah, but it’s a small sample size to extrapolate.

Just over a week ago, the CMO said they estimated 136k active cases and halving time of two weeks...

Interesting that the children are significantly less affected than the adults, at least when measuring the antibodies, even though the schools have been open all the time in Sweden. Either the kids spread the disease less, or their immune systems react differently and they don't get antibodies to the same extent. It's certainly not due to better social distancing.

Was it Switzerland where they noticed something similar (potentially) with age groups? Whereas ONS here aren't seeing any evidence for it (yet - it could become apparent later etc.). Other part to it is, I think this is right, that this was after the 'peak' in Stockholm and it seems broadly similar across a number of countries in the proportion who've had it. Redbyrdz said some weeks ago about measures taken needing to suit individual countries/cultures. Does make me wonder whether a lot of countries will end up in roughly the same place by time of a vaccine with some variation explainable by things like overwhelmed hospital systems and geography and demography etc. edit: also think djahern has posted his thoughts on that which is where I'm pilfering from.

A rebuttal from the Jenner Institute to that article in Forbes.

https://www.jenner.ac.uk/about/news/the-oxford-covid-19-vaccine-works-very-well-in-monkeys

So they state  'These are small studies designed to look at the safety of the vaccine before starting human clinical trials.'

Well personally I think the people behind these vaccines should stop telling the press how well their trials have gone. However, that wouldn't see the pharma companies share price go through the roof.

How do you know it’s not had an effect? There’s no data for Sweden with schools closed and we can’t really compare to other countries. Sweden has fared worse than other Scandinavian countries though.

This is a virus that is defeated by soap and water. Keeping schools open might well be accompanied by an over emphasized hygiene regime.
