I think it’s more complicated than just one playing moving position and there were tricky decisions to make given injuries. But we really did take WAY too long to make changes during that losing slump.

Just looking at Fabinho’s stats from this season;

Starting at centre back

P17 W6 D7 L4 F26 A14

1.47 points per game. This  included 5 draws and 4 defeats in his last 9 starts in that position.

Starting in midfield

P11 W9 D1 L1 F26 A14

2.54 points per game. This included 8 wins and 1 draw in his last 9 starts in that position.

It’s worth mentioning also that he had outlying results in each position, the 7-2 defeat to Villa in midfield and the 7-0 win against Palace in defence.

I feel Klopp realised the importance of having Fabinho in midfield after the draws to Newcastle and Leeds which is why Williams was drafted into the team. It is imperative we have enough cover at centre back next season so we don’t have to even contemplate playing Fabinho there because we’re a different animal with him in midfield.

A selfless, crucial shift put in by Fab this season. Player of the season but for Mo’s goal tally.

Still incredibly underrated but what a fucking player. Sublime in 2 positions for the duration of the season, he's one of the best players in the league

For me one of the top priority signings for this summer should be a midfielder who is capable of covering for Hendo and Fabinho. Plenty of games to be played there so player should be of a certain caliber. Not sure if we'll get another one to cover for Gini too. Would make sense as Milner is not getting any younger.

I'd be interested (though too lazy to do it myself) to see the record with Fab in defence and Hendo in midfield at the same time, as results only seemed to take a turn for the worse when Hendo was first moved back into defence and then injured.
Like last season, Hendo was showing himself to be perfectly capable of covering for Fab as the holding midfielder and Fab was certainly performing well as a CB early on, but when we had neither playing as a holding midfielder, we had serious problems.

Why the hell would we allow Fabinho to get into the final year of his contract? 27 years old and allow a huge asset to get into his final year would be one of the most baffling footballing and business decisions around.

Anyway newspaper reports before that said we will offer deals to Fabinho and Alisson.

I totally agree, believe me. I also think Salah should of course be looked at. I do question whether James Pearce knows as much as he use to. Not like he had a clue about the Thiago deal last year.

Fabinho, for me, is as important as VVD.

New contract for Fabinho.

https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/439722-fabinho-signs-new-long-term-contract-with-liverpool-fc

Quote
Fabinho has signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool FC.

The midfielder put pen to paper on fresh terms at the Reds' pre-season training camp in Evian on Tuesday.

"I'm delighted to have signed a new contract with the club," Fabinho told Liverpoolfc.com. "Since the beginning of the conversation, I was really positive about it because it's what I wanted – staying in this club, keep playing for Liverpool. Now this is official and I'm really happy.

"These last three seasons I've been really happy here. I learned a lot with the manager, with all the staff, with the boys as well.

"We achieved things together and for me I think it's the best place to be, the best place to keep growing, to keep learning from the staff, from the boys. Hopefully we will keep achieving good things."

A Brazil international who has been described as the team's 'lighthouse' by assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders, Fabinho arrived at Anfield from AS Monaco in the summer of 2018.

After a period of acclimatisation, he established himself as a pillar of Jürgen Klopp's vintage, record-breaking Liverpool side that won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and Premier League across two glorious seasons.

The 27-year-old racked up 122 appearances during his first three campaigns on Merseyside and has now committed his future to the club.

He continued: "The manager and the staff are pushing us for this because they know our capacity, they know our quality.

"Personally, as I say, I want to be the best for the team, I want to be an important piece in this team – not just as a player but as a leader as well. Keep learning from the boys and the staff and be the best I can.

"We know with these players we can go really far in all the competitions. In the last year we didn't win any trophies, so I think everyone is hungry to win more trophies, win more things, to keep our fans happy. Hopefully we will do this this season."
Rafa Benitez: "I'll always keep in my heart the good times I've had here, the strong and loyal support of the fans in the tough times and the love from Liverpool. I have no words to thank you enough for all these years and I am very proud to say that I was your manager. Thank you so much once more and always remember: You'll never walk alone."
