Good on him, and yes it did seem like James had his ear.

Anybody see the pre-match conference with Wijnaldum. Was he coached on what to say by Milner? :D

Said effectively nothing at all. Wouldn't talk about Buvac (good lad) and said the team wasn't aware of Sean Cox until the next day, which is good the club shield them from information to keep them focused on the task too. But it was all a bit dull. For example, be was asked if he had spoke to Strootman and his answer was essentially "I spoke to him just after the game, about the game. I haven't spoken since". :D

He captained a title-winning side, so I figure he has had experience in managing journos’ questions.

Wijnaldum is an absolute treat of a player. So underrated to be honest. Watch Modric play (widely considered the best midfielder in the world) and watch Gini play and tell me if you can find any similarities.

The guy is an absolute boss. He's also been our best player in 'big' games since coming into the team. He's probably one of the best midfielders in transition in the world. The only issue he really has is that he's not incisive enough against parked teams, which I think comes from a lack of confidence (not that he's not confident, just not bullish) because the talent and skills are clearly there.

Put a phenominal amount of work protecting the right side and young Trent tonight,Roma played a game to bypass our midfield ie long diagonal balls. Had a couple of quid on him scoring tonight, well in Gini lad.

At one time when we were under pressure around 60+ minutes he was pressing high, then dropped back to press and chase the ball then ran to support Trent at right back. Immense game from Gini tonight, never stopped.

Denilson (he of Betis world record fee fame) was co-commentating on the game here. The main commentator laughed when that happened and said something like wow that's wonderful! Denilson then said what literally translates to "he gave him a little hat there". I have dug in and apparently that is actually a thing here. If you lift the ball over someones head and collect it - it's Chapeuzinho.

Any ideas why he ran over to Kornmayer?

Quote
Georginio Wijnaldum has revealed why he made a beeline for Andreas Kornmayer after netting Liverpool's second goal during last night's Champions League semi-final encounter with AS Roma.

The Dutchman all but confirmed the Reds' place in the tournament's final in Kiev on May 26 when he headed home from close range in the first half of a 4-2 defeat at Stadio Olimpico.

And he reacted by running straight toward the bench before embracing the club's head of fitness and conditioning while wearing a trademark grin.

Asked about the moment after the match, Wijnaldum said: "We already had an agreement a few games ago that I would run to him if I scored but it didn’t happen.

"He said a few times that I’d score but then he forgot. Then before Roma he said I would score, so I had to!"

Reigning champions Real Madrid are now the only team that can stop Jürgen Klopp's side from putting the club's sixth European Cup in the Anfield trophy cabinet.

Wijnaldum expects the game to provide the sternest test of his playing career thus far.

“It is probably the biggest test we could have had, the biggest I’ve had as a player,” the midfielder admitted.

“It’s going to be difficult, but for both clubs. Everyone in the Champions League has quality. We have to be aware of their quality but they have to be aware of ours. They are not the only team with quality or the only team that can win games

“The Champions League is the biggest competition you can play at club level so if you can go in your first season to the final it’s a great feeling. But then you want to win the final now, so you can’t relax.”

I think the fact that he was rested well this season means he's performing very effectively now at the fag end.

Glad him and Van Dijk aren't going to the world cup.

He will boss the midfield against Madrid.

Been reading a lot of what these Madrid fans think. All of them having a laugh at our midfield and think they're going to boss it as they are more talented. Kroos, Modric, Kovacic/Casemiro vs. the mighty Milner, Henderson and Wijnaldum is what they were laughing at. We'll win the midfield battle and tear them a new one. Kroos doesn't do any defensive work, Wijnaldum is younger and hungrier than Modric. And as for Casemiro the less said the better. If he plays the way he usually does and the ref isn't bribed he'll be sent off before half time.
