That 2nd half was fantastic.

When we stopped booting the ball upfield bypassing our midfield he looked invisible as did the rest of the midfield.

Whatever Klopp said at HT we started using the ball well in the 2nd half and Gini was instrumental in that in our good possession.

Might be worth persevering with in that 6 role.

Like much of the team, he was anonymous in the first half. Most of it was due to the midfield just getting bypassed/a lack of options. The way it was always explained to me is that a CDM can end up like a windscreen wiper, moving left to right, just chasing everything - something that can end up very ineffectual.

Support came from midfield more in the second half, he got the ball a lot more and he was fantastic.

Says a lot about his character that he turned it around so spectacularly.

he played superbly in the second half and instigated the crucial goal....his calm assurance was the catalyst to us passing the ball better and retaining possession.  City visibly tired as well after the break but we played so much better in the centre mid and that led to the wonderful killer goal.

When we started to calmly play the ball around in the 2nd half then he looked very good. He’s the type of player who you think has held onto the ball too long and then he emerges from a group of three opposition players with the ball totally taking them out of the game.

Comparitively:-
54% of Gundogan's were forward
55% of Silva's were forward
59% of Milner's passes were forward
67% of De Bruyne's were forward
79% of Chamberlain's were forward

The above are all players whose average position shows them as central midfielders during the game.

There's a few attributes Gini has that Hendo doesn't, like his ability to shield the ball, can receive the ball on the half turn, plays with his head up and moves the ball quicker, has superior tactical awareness and arguably he is better in the air (at least according to the "eye test" for me, although maybe we look at the stats on that).

Will we see Gini in the #6 more often now?

That second half performance was dominant by Gini. I criticized the midfield in the first half but after the break they really stood up. Those Cruyff turns off Gini's were wonderful and in the build up to the goal you could see how he had a complete vision of the players around him. Hope to continue seeing him build on this performance.
I’ve plenty links to the clubs playing and backroom staff as many on here know thank you very much. Fair enough, I admire your optimism. But you’re absolute ostriches if you think this squad, even with 2 or 3 new, “cut price” players with potential get us anywhere close

If there are no options in front of you, you find someone square or behind you to retain possession. Babu's stats indicate otherwise. We were pressed into submission and there was a need to garner some possession even if it means knocking it about at the back so that the team can get it's shape back. We weren't able to do so for much of the first half because of the high press. We forced to block the channels and be compact which was difficult. So credit to City and Pep's plan. They , however, ran out of steam and we then able to put a foot on the ball.
So for those who suggest the midfield and in particular Gini were invisible perhaps need to open their eyes and understand how a game unfolds (don't mean to be patronizing/ condescending but it is annoying). They need to watch and understand how our midfield would push up and press and then sprint back to fall into place to keep the structure. That is part of the plan and is damn hard work and requires mental alertness throughout.

I always thought him intelligent enough to play that role but not sure whether he could reach a ceiling required of a title winning side. I felt that he needs to scan a bit more and not sure whether he can spray long passes accurately enough. After last night, he might be able to grow into that position but still have my reservations as to him being elite. Interesting to note his turns and directness at no. 6 and yet you wonder why he doesn't try it when playing at no. 8.
He fits into our squad perfectly and as much he gets stick from our own fans , I do not see him being shifted out and expect him to play a big role next season as a starter in one of the 1st 15 regular players.

He can keep possession very well and circulate the ball probably to a better degree than Can and so it turned out to be beneficial for Can to not be playing.

His main issue in that role is his lack of passing range and maybe aerial ability. Defensively he seems to have stepped it up. I've not been a fan of his this season but there is impressive potential for him in the role if he can just work on his passing over the summer, because we're rarely going to find a guy as fluid as him against the press. City played 5 central players yesterday, Fernandinho, KDB, Silva, Sterling and Jesus. All of these guys are known to be very good pressers of the ball. Gini destroyed them second half.

It's almost a culture shock seeing a Liverpool DM actually turning against the pressure instead of just passing it back every single time they get pressed. For how we are built as a team this quality is incredibly important. Gini is the best solution we have right now to deal with opposition pressing if they see any point doing so when Gini makes them look stupid. We need to continue with this and get Gini on the ball much more this way.
