I seriously hope that big fat contract we gave him was heavily dependent on his fitness...

At this rate we'll need a new first choice striker nevermind a backup.

One thing for certain, next season we have to view Sturridge as a luxury rather than the main striker. Sterling has to play through the middle and we have to spend big to bring in a top class forward.

I think we have enough evidence to suggest we can't rely on him as our main man.

Don't specify how long he'll be out for. Just that he's a doubt for Arsenal.

You would imagine that if we fail to beat Arsenal, Blackburn and Villa that he will just get the rest of the season off. Unless of course we get close to Utd again.

Top striker needs to come in, simple as that. Sturridge is a luxury extra to have who can play sometimes but not somebody you can build a team around.

Sturridges playing time prior to this season:

@DanKennett: This concerns me: Daniel Sturridge % of #EPL minutes played last 4 seasons:
10/11 33%
11/12 66%
12/13 37%
13/14 67%
Overall 51%

12/13 is a bit of a red herring isn't it? Wasnt he on the bench a lot for Chelsea that season?

Unfortunately you are very correct. It felt a bit before that you could possibly believe a bit at least that he would turn it around. Not completely, but up his game tally to at least 75% or so. Now at best he will play half the games at max. It's very unfortunate considering his talents, but it's our reality and we desperately need one of his talents to come in, one who can actually be fit for larger parts of the season.

The seasons before us he would have been on the bench a lot so that's probably slightly misleading. No denying his bad injury record with us but still need to consider it.

It's kind of like having Owen again, great when he's in the team and fully fit, but seems to be either injured or recovering from injuries too often.

That's true, but even looking at the injuries since he joined us, there's a very worrying trend:

Hip/Thigh Injury    Liverpool Injuries    2015 March 22nd
Hip/Thigh Injury    Liverpool Injuries    2014 November 18th
Calf/Shin Injury    Liverpool Injuries    2014 October 13th
Thigh Muscle Strain    Liverpool Injuries    2014 September 5th
Hamstring Injury    Liverpool Injuries    2014 July 31st
Hip/Thigh Injury    Liverpool Injuries    2014 June 14th
Hamstring Injury    Liverpool Injuries    2014 April 13th
Ankle/Foot Injury    Liverpool Injuries    2013 November 29th
Hip/Thigh Injury    Liverpool Injuries    2013 November 9th
Hip/Thigh Injury    Liverpool Injuries    2013 September 1st
Ankle/Foot Injury    Liverpool Injuries    2013 May 29th
Hip/Thigh Injury    Liverpool Injuries    2013 March 19th
Hip/Thigh Injury    Liverpool Injuries    2013 February 25th
Hip/Thigh Injury    Liverpool Injuries    2013 February 3rd

Nearly all of them are hip/thigh and most seem to be muscle problems rather than impact injuries. Big summer ahead to find the right striker to take us forward

So here's the question then. We need goals this season, like desperately. Sterling (if fit enough) has shown he can operate as a striker, with good pressing and movement etc. But at this stage he is not a natural striker yet (if he ever will be, and if that's to be at LFC)

But Balotelli: what was the point of spending £16 million on him if he is not called into action now? As a starter. Lambert is nowhere, Borini is in a parallel universe playing Fifa and earning lots of money. Unless Mario is ruining every training session, surely now is time to fit him into a formation, even as a partner for Raheem?

Sterling will play throw the middle again. Frankly, we have created more chances and looked dynamic with Sterling rather than Sturridge through the middle.

Your right since Sturridge has returned we have looked blunt up top. Daniel has just not offered the pace and mobility that our game requires.

Not sure if it's a mental thing with him or the injuries have taken there toll.

Liverpool may as well hold Sturridge back until next season. He his body right and give him a good pre season. Liverpool's number priority in the summer needs to be getting a top class striker. I personally would go for Lacazette. Pace, power and can work the channels. Sturridge is being more a luxury and less someone you can rely on.

I get the feeling much of it is performance/appearance  based. Surely the club isn't crazy enough to give a player with such an injury record a flat wage

Hopefully a nice summer with no football gives his muscles some good time to rest. Its too early to write him off though sometimes players have seasons like this. He was out for a long time and then thrust back into a very hectic and important period for us.

Yep. I think if we had strikers who were scoring he would have been eased in rather than dropped into the deep end. You could tell he wasn't moving completely freely.

Agreed. Time to shut him down for the season, and let the physios work with him for three or four months leading into the pre-season. They've got to figure something out or the club may need to sell him after next season. Wonderful player, but he can't contribute much to the team if he never reaches peak fitness for a sustained period.

Surely it is tied to performance and appearance.

But yes. You get the feeling we need to step out of our usual way of doing things and pay for quality. We were willing to do it with Suarez. But what top striker who is high odds to come in and do a job in our side would move to Liverpool? I can't think of many besides Benzema, and I can't imagine him leaving Madrid for Liverpool, much as I wish I could.

Really puts into perspective Suarez and how unimportant his bans were. What he miss, 8-10 games a season, all because of bans? That's nothing! Fit for every fucking match... damn his wife. ;)

You could argue it would almost be worth blowing the entire budget on a quality forward and using our kids to pad out the squad, rather than several so so signings. Our striker signings this season, heck the last two seasons, have been nothing short of a disaster.
