Starts tonight 9.00 BBC 1, looks simply stunning.

Worth saying the guy is 85 years old and still he is fronting his nature masterpieces, got to say I'm proud to pay my TV licence for such programmes.

Thanks to the heads up from someone at work this morning made sure I got it recorded on the planner.

One of the lads in work over heard and said "What you want to watch that shit for?"

I didn't even bother answering to that, some people are just oxygen thieves.

Still going strong.

The licence fee is worth it alone for a new series of Attenborough.

Had this on in the background while watching the match. Absolutely stunning, as usual from BBC nature.

Loved the pack wolves hunting the young bison and then the adult bison putting it out of its misery before he got mauled to death :D

Can anyone tell me if the BBC make their own sound effects? I have always thought it must be, or they must have really amazing mic's, especially when they are playing insect noises.

Even more obvious tonight though when the glaciers started dropping, sounded like WW2.

Jeez I don't know where to start with the opening episode, so many highlights.

The fighting polar bear, who by the end looked as though he'd done 12 rounds with Tyson!
The 18 million (yes that's right) shearwaters going fishing alongside the humpbacks
The stunning colour of the lakes in Greenland
The icewalls exploding in the glaziers which then develop into icebergs, and the shapes of some of those icebergs are amazing.
The surfing penguins so cool
The team work by those bloody terrible orca's as they hunted the weddall seal poor thing
Seeing the life underneath the frozen water, ice-fish, which apparantly have anti-freeze inside their bodies, say nothing of the sea spiders and what looked like woodlice.
The caves under the ice block, with crystals as big as men!

Also when you see the vastness of the south pole it makes you admire the likes of Scott even more, I mean without all the vehicles we take for granted now, how did they manage it back then.

Also the mountain that had been eroded into almost nothing by the elements, the winds in the south pole blow at about 200 miles an hour. The sculptures that have been created by the winds there, looked at if they belonged on a Hollywood film set.

The whole thing was just amazing, if you haven't already seen it, get onto iplayer you won't regret it. Can't wait for episode 2 now.

Forgot about half that stuff you mentioned Jill...

Another interesting thing i thought, was not only were they at one point inside a volcano, but they were also inside a Glacier. Not the safest of places to be i would imagine.. ;D

That's right I forgot about the glacier. But the funny bit when they were inside the volcano the guy who knocked the crystal off actually managed to fit it back in place, it looked as though he'd glued it together again, amazing.

Just to sound a note of discord, and to land a punch for the techies over the luvvies.

Is Attenborough not little more than a glorified voiceover man (albeit a very good one)?  Surely the stars of this show are the cameramen and the technicians who get those stunning shots and come up with all those stunning images.

Absolutely no doubt the Cameramen and the Technicians get absolutely nowhere near the acclamation they deserve. The problem is, for most viewers watching Attenborough's documentaries they have no idea who the crew are and the only two constants are Attenborough and the fantastic footage.

It's like movies and tv shows, those you can see will get more recognition than those behind the scenes. Unfair? Indeed it is.

Attenborough is still the star of the show mind  ;)

WOW totally amazing.

So many great scenes and footage.

I have seen quite a few programs about Killer whales but I don't think I have ever seen footage before of them hunting using waves.

I just loved that shot of the Sea lion in the wave hunting

And the Wolf pack hunting the Bison.
