Yeah, but we're not in the competition so that's null.

That's what I mean, though, the fact that we are not in the competition with the highest coefficient.  Probably not going to happen, just wanted clarification.

It seems that UEFA have no precedent and rules for such a scenario. Lets say you are UEFA and presented with a scenario like this. What would you do?

Would you not admit your most highly rated team with the best market appeal? Preferebly one with a winning history and with new owners that have just bought a bunch of players? Or some random team from Belgium or Denmark?

still say this is not the way to go to CL. We dont need charity, too big of a club.

The precedent is there - it's what happens then the Titleholder slot is not used because they have already qualified in the Grooup Stages. This year Switzerland (Basel) benefitted and the next country down is Belgium (Racing Genk)

You are right that the rules do not appear to cover what happens if Qualifying is already under way but I can see one of the two scenarios occurring otherwise

1) A Free Draw of the Losers of the Champions QR4 (given Fenerbahche qualified as Champions

2) The Highest-Ranking loser from the Champions QR4

only then can I see them looking at the non-Champions (Arsenal) and then ourselves...

I'll be watching the exeter game, regardless of the arsenal result what matters is what uefa say over the next few days ultimately. Very unlikely they would pick us

So who would they pick? Thats the million dollor question

Getting in to CL after finishing 6th would take the piss, every other team would kick off and I cannot see it happening.

Fuck 'em.

How did he know about this last season? Losing to Tottenham at home so we dont get in Europe to instead get an automatic CL place. He really is the king :D

It would be amazing if we got put in, but because we were the 5th team from England, we weren't separated from the rest in the group draw and hence were drawn in the same group as the Mancs.

Never in a million years, but it would be immense.

We were the 6th team in England

It's quite sad that people are getting excited by this.

Cash wise it would be great for the club, but in football terms it's all wrong. Not to mention us not even getting into the Europa League to suddenly be gifted a position in the CL wouldn't sit well with me, sorry.

I can't see UEFA letting them stay in if they are knocked out though, now THAT would be embarrassing!  :P
They let us in in 2006 despite not qualifying. Lucky, lucky Liverpool!

Seeing as I started this, let's end it for now... (as if)

UEFA may or may not choose us, and we may or may not deserve it.  We've got a match in an hour, time to switch over to the pre-match thread and engage with that particular madness instead of this one!

Really can't see this happening....

Platini has gone big on the 'giving smaller teams from lesser footballing nations' a chance in the big time. So when a space opens up, mmm let me think.... 'I know give it to Liverpool! England doesn't have nearly enough representation in the competition'.

The only way i could see UEFA giving us the spot is because it would boost the commercial side of the competition.

Nice thought, but i really don't see it happening.

This might make people think I'm mad but football wise, no thanks. It would seem like a piss take and also unfair to the team that finished above us.
Money wise I'd take it this season in a heartbeat.

Just to check, do you mean because Barcelona won the title, but also their league, they are already in the groups? Meaning Basel and Genk bumped up?

NINE pages in an hour based on a wafer-thin story or rumour with little to no chance of it happening?

Awesomeness.
I trust the King, but if we lose a few more on the trot now - he may have to step aside, and we have to purchase another manager in the middle of the season. If we are relegated, this could be the end of our ambitions to win any title the next 100 years.

But if the team is withdrawn then the place cannot go to a team in the same FA......

It would surely be the most 'co-efficient' (or highest ranked) club that is not playing in Europe at all, not just the CL. This would mean that Arsenal's result today shouldn't matter on the decision, since even if they lose they'd be in the EL. I don't think there is a rule that over 4 teams of a country aren't allowed in the competition; UEFA could definitely make an exception as they did in 2005/06.

Ok, it sounds like a very very long shot so I am not even going to get excited about this (yet), and yes there are probably lots of teams in other leagues who 'deserve' it more because of where they finished etc.

BUT if it is offered to us by Uefa then we should bite their flipping hand off!

Sure we are probably not equipped to sustain a top 4 place (our minimum target) and a CL campaign but it would mean, what, an extra £20m in revenue?  I imagine our deadline day transfers would be quite different!
