Really hard to see where a goal is coming from. Maybe an Adam corner or free kick?

Kuyt's working like a trojan. He's everywhere. I think Downing's another who looks off the pace though. Need a bit of luck now, I'm afraid.

Hate to say it but this calls out for an Aquilani type player to come on and give a bit of spark in midfield. Raul has been largely ineffectual since he has come on.

A much bigger problem is how deep our defensive line is. When we've lost the ball in attack, instead of pressuring right back as a team, we've instead (Hodgson style) retreated to the edge of our own box into a solid two banks of four. Now that we're in need of a goal, when in possession we should have the confidence for our back line to be around the half way line, instead they're half way up our own half. It's fine when we're playing on the break, but in this situation it makes it really hard to ping the ball about at pace, and it makes it very, very difficult to win the ball in dangerous areas, especially when someone like Suarez is leading that pressing effort while visibly tiring.

Good point.

You're right, Flanagan is too nervous after his mistake and is giving the ball away. He needs to focus or come off, and I feel bad for saying that.

Me too. He needs our support and he's a young player and such but right now he's so selfaware about not making another mistake that he's not doing much else

85 MINS: better passing - Adam dribbles through 4 players and crosses. Comes to nothing.

4 minutes and change remaining. Need something to happen soon. A bit of luck a nice deflection, one goal scoring opportunity. Anything right now.

86 MINS: Carroll with another header, wide. He's had a lot of chances with his noggin.

Wes Brown headbutts Kuyt in an aerial challenge. I know technically it's a 50/50 but he was never going to get that ball

Good point.

Good post that from HBHR. The other thing the deep line means is there is a lot of space between the lines for Sunderland to play in at the moment. Instead of our team being spread over 60 yards of the pitch it´s closer to 90 leaving big gaps for Sunderland to break into.

Flattered to decieve imo. He's been winning thses headers in difficult situations again and again. Our crosses haven't been connecting at all it's just Carroll's absurd ability to connect with anything that floats that's making it appear so

I guess Kenny will have to work on that if the team wants to play like they did in the first half during the whole 90 mins.

Agreed, Carroll hasn´t had a chance created for him today. He´s done well to win the balls he has but put so much effort into winning the battle that he can´t also be expected to generate power on the header and direction.

The one 1/2 chance he had, he done brilliantly to put away and was wrongly given a foul against him.

Sunderland started with 14 men so we were never going to win this game

Dowd was dreadful in fairness. It was ours to win though. The red card would have helped.

And that's it! Liverpool draw 1-1 on the opening day. 2 points dropped I am afraid. We should have run out clear winners here. We had our chances but they were squandered. Dowd has to play a major role in this however.

Well that's a kick in the bollocks. We did more than enough in the first half for a win.

Suarez bottled the pen
Dowd bottled the red card
Corroll scored a legitimate goal
Downing almost ripped the net

Only ourselves to blame for that second half. Regardless of the first half, Dowd's fuck up with the red card and 2nd goal, Downing's shot an inch lower you can only play the cards you've been dealt and from the 60th minute we weren't in it to win it sadly

We looked so tired for the last 20 mins. Downing, Lucas, Carra, Adam. Just kept hoofing it to save our legs. A bit worrying really.

Nevertheless, we played really well first half. I think Kenny's learnt some useful things. Kuyt should probably start ahead of Henderson, Flanno needs to learn to bounce back from an error, and we need to keep Downing in the game for longer. Lucas and Suarez need a rest.

Sunderland look a good side to be fair, but we should be beating them - and, I have to say, would have, if it weren't for some poor decisions and a badly taken penno.
