Really surprise at Koivisto going, she always gives her all and is a very good player. The others I'm not so surprise about.

Would love us to be ambitious in the Summer and try and go for a big name who is in the free market as a few are floating about especially in attack.

The issue here will be wages. The high-profile freebies have almost certainly already moved themselves too far up the pay scale to fit our wage structure. To be able to sign any of these players, we'd be talking about the kind of ambition that entails radically overhauling the business model copied over from the men's team. I don't see it happening. But neither do I think WSL squad development has reached the point of it being a game of high-profile signings or bust.

You mean this Miedema? Barca semi attending, Arne Slot column writing Miedema? Her big Red heart is already here, it's just her legs that aren't.

I've followed the team closely for the last three seasons and I think she has been the best player across that period. A big loss.

This article is the first one I've seen compiling a list of all the WSL players who are free agents this summer https://sport.optus.com.au/news/womens/os74321/mary-earps-mackenzie-arnold-every-wsl-player-coming-off-contract

Not as exciting as previous years but there are still some interesting names in there. I'd be at least considering Terland even if she wasn't on a free.

Are there any on this list that would fill the void of (or improve upon) the players who are leaving?

All I can think of is Elisabeth Terland or maybe Katie Robinson, though there are a few on the list that I don't know as well as I should.

Terland, yes.

Robinson would also be a yes if it wasn't for our preferred system. Brighton play her as a wide forward and we don't use those, that's why Lawley is off.

Mace would be an interesting one. Was far too young to be getting into the Arsenal team so she goes out on loan. Signs for City, only to again end up out on loan. Now she will be looking for her next club. I've just seen the latest report that Chelsea wants her, with the intention of loaning her out themselves. She is still only 20, so it's not awful awful. But at what point does it become more sensible for her to stop trying to start her career at the very top? All that said, I have no idea what is happening with Fahey. I expected her name to be in today's announcement. And we do still have Silcock returning from loan, who is only a year younger than Mace herself. So if Mace did come, it might be that we use her at DM, which is a position I expect us to add depth in.

If United are considering letting Clinton go permanently, we should throw our hat into the ring for no reason other than winding up their fans and making Spurs spend more than necessary.

As for the rest, I don't see them being likely transfers for one reason or another. I think our free signings will mostly be coming from elsewhere.

Beard's comments on Koivisto:

“Absolutely tough decision because Emma is a fantastic person. She leaves nothing on the pitch or the training pitch, so it was a real tough one, especially when we were discussing it as a staff group. I think Emma is at a stage where she wants to play week in, week out.” https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/well-miss-them-all-matt-beards-tribute-four-departing-lfc-women-players

I'd made peace with her departure in the way you do when you're thinking it's a player's choice. But I'm not getting her 'her choice' vibes from the above at all, I've gone right back to thinking it really is the case that we didn't see a place for her, at least not in the starting XI.

So who are we seeing a place for who justifies bumping Koivisto out? Anybody less than elite is going to be an anti-climatic head scratcher.

Chelsea are beating United 4-0, meaning City need to score six as things stand.

Here's my prediction...

1. Liverpool will finish 7th (behind Arsenal, Chelsea, ManC, Villa, ManU & Spurs).
(Spurs will have a better season than expected, ManU will struggle and not do as well as last season).

2. Arsenal will win the WSL this season.
(Unbeaten in every match except the 1st of the season  ;)  )

3. Arsenal, Chelsea and ManC will get the European places.
(Villa will push them all the way this season).

4. Bristol City
(They will go straight back down to the Championship at a whimper).

That was my prediction for this season on (page 121 of this thread).
I'm so pleased to have been so wrong.

Matt Beard was named Barclays Women's Super League Manager of the Season at the League Managers Association Awards on Tuesday.

The Liverpool FC Women boss was recognised for guiding his squad to fourth in the 2023-24 WSL.

Having finished seventh upon their return to the top flight in 2022-23, Beard's side took further strides this term to secure the club's highest placing in the division since 2017.

A four-game winning run to end the campaign – including victories against Manchester United and eventual champions Chelsea – helped seal a spot in the top four.

Beard said: "We're delighted with the season. These awards are humbling and I'm very, very grateful to everyone that voted. It's not just about me, it's about the team too. They have to go out and perform and the staff work relentlessly behind the scenes to help support everything that we do as well.

"It's about the collective and that's the staff and the players. Everyone deserves recognition for that."

He added: "I think you can see from the team performances of late it's a lot of the work that we've done and the players have done. You can start to see the understanding of it on a more consistent basis. I think at the beginning of the season we had a fantastic start by winning at the Emirates [against Arsenal] and I think it gave us that platform to kick on.

"If you look at May as an example, it was a tough month, we played Bristol City, who at that point weren't relegated and were fighting for every point.

"We then play Chelsea and won 4-3 and then beat Manchester United 1-0 and finish off with a great win at Leicester. If I just look at the consistency of the performance levels and the character within the group in all those games, I think it speaks volumes for the work that has gone on this year.

"I've said this a few times this year, but it's exciting to see where this team can go."

First little summer transfers tease, buried at the bottom of Beard's final column...

"There won’t be as many incomings this summer compared to what we had last year."
https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/matt-beards-review-2023-24-special-thank-yous-and-summer-plans

Not really sure how to interpret that when last summer had seven arrivals. Less could still be a decent number.

Seeing the crowds in Bilbaou for the champions league final makes you realise just how much women’s football is going to blow up. It would be a missed opportunity to demolish Goodison when it could be converted into a women’s joint stadium. That would keep money coming into North Liverpool, and strengthen Merseyside’s position in the women’s game. Could also be used for big under 21 games for both teams. You could demolish two of the stands to reduce the footprint and have a larger campus.
This is the type of initiative that warrants public investment as it would help to stop the rot once Everton move out.  It won’t happen but it should be considered.

This is a tough one, I partially agree with you.
However, I think it will be a number of years before  we (or Everton) are able to fill Godison on a regular basis.

Our average attendance was only 4,668 last season.  (accoirding to https://www.footballwebpages.co.uk/womens-super-league/attendances).

I think women's football has a big job to do. No need to improve the quality of the players, they're good enough, and then games are just as entertaining as the men's games.

I think its the Marketing that's lacking.
I can't count the number of times I spoke to someone who said "wow, that was a good game, I didn't know womens football was that competitive".
Once people watch 1 game, they'll probably come back again, but the marketing is soooo poor that blokes who don't have children don't want to come.

Please no-one take offense, I honestly and genuinely wish to offend absolutely no one.

The old image of only a few mums and their small kids watching, is not helpful if we want to boost our numbers, many men don't want to be the only bloke in that context.
Nor is the (sometimes excessive) LGBTQI+ logos and slogans everywhere. Its a fantastic cause, however people just want to watch football, not to participate in a political movement. None of us really care if 'player x 'is strait or gay, though we are happy to know that gay players feel safe.

Some of the recent photo shoots in which the women players had an almost equal footing to the men players was a step in the right direction. But maybe maybe have some men players in the same frame as the women players from time to time may help to raise the profile (as long as the women are not over-sexualized or used as eye candy).

Our womens team could be way bigger if only we marketed it well.

PS: I was at the Arsenal game at the start of the season, in a ~45,000 crowd. Next season Arsenal will be at the Emirates every home match, that can only happen with good marketing.

Our Women's team should go on the same pre season tour as the Men's side. Like this summer we're going to the States, just schedule a few games with Women's League over there.

PS: I was at the Arsenal game at the start of the season, in a ~45,000 crowd. Next season Arsenal will be at the Emirates every home match, that can only happen with good marketing.
Arsenal's attendances are an outlier and won't be replicated by anybody any time soon because the reason for their fan base exploding is a pretty unique perfect collision of factors that can't simply be copy/pasted by other clubs. And it sounds mad to say it, but I'm glad we're not them. Yes, I would love to have 45,000 fans chucking money into the match day revenue pot - that side of Arsenal's situation I do very much wish we had. But when it comes to the actual make up of the Arsenal fanbase, we are better off with our 4500 because a sizable percentage of the crowd who have taken an interest in Arsenal over the last couple of years have not taken an interest in Arsenal Football Club at all. They haven't become 'an Arsenal fan'. Their interest isn't in the sport, either. It all relates back to this:

however people just want to watch football ... None of us really care if 'player x 'is strait or gay

For many lesbian and bi girls/women, this is in fact a huge factor in why women's football appeals. It makes the sport more relatable and fosters a community that feels a welcoming one. Boiled down, knowing the players on the pitch are even more like you than just being a fellow female is a really nice tonic to the entrenched misogyny and homophobia that men's football casually throws around. It all makes for an even greater statement that football is in fact for you. For many of those who find this resonating with them, it's all just taken as an additional reason to enjoy being here - the football itself and the emotional attachment to a club are the main drivers behind interest and investment of time and energy.

...but when it comes to Arsenal, the presence of lesbian/bi players has attracted a completely different crowd of lesbian/bi girls/women to the 'here for the football and just happen to like that I see myself reflected on the pitch' type I've described above. Instead, Arsenal have found themselves being considered the perfect source of entertainment for those raised on social media and Love Island. Now, Arsenal are not the only club in the world whose women's team has lesbian/bi players, they aren't the only club in the world whose women's team has players in relationships with each other, either - but Arsenal do have more of this than most, and the nature of these relationships in particular makes Arsenal doubly interesting to those who aren't here to be entertained by a sport but rather by a real-life soap opera.

I'm not saying every single one of the 45,000 people who go through the Emirates turnstiles are one of these new breed of women's football 'followers', who attend games just to be able to interact with the player/couple they're lost in a parasocial relationship with, but many of them are, and having them bump up the attendances doesn't half help convince actual football fans or prospective new ones that women's matches must in fact be worth watching and something might actually be being missed out on if not bothering to go yourself. Throw a bunch of English Euros winners into the mixing bowl, add a dash of high table placement and the odd trophy, sprinkle in a little bit of a general good mood around AFC on the whole, and all the hard work is done before the marketing team even sit down at their desks. The problem Arsenal have is that they've no way to accurately measure true attachment to the club in the average match-goer, or predict what might happen to the fan base when the favourite players of those only here to cheer on the England contingent or of those who only care for the personal life dramas transfer out.

Our 4500 gates are much easier to read. We're going to have to build them up the hard way, as will many others. But regardless of whether you have shortcuts available or not, the task at hand is one of managing to do what I've mentioned already: convincing people that women's football is worth watching. It's a marathon. I'd say the sport on the whole is at about mile 10 right now. Our relegation means we're probably at mile 8. I don't know how long it will take us to personally to reach the point of every match being played at Anfield in front of 45,000, but I'd like to think that our efforts on this front will eventually produce a purer fan base of true fans than Arsenal are currently crowing about having.

Kellan,
OMG, what a good post. You highlight a genuine dilemma deep within me.

On one hand... I would love Liverpool to have a huge 45,000+ fanbase. We could then buy the great players allowing us to dominate the WSL, and challenge for the Womens Champions League each season.

On the other hand... I kinda like the fact that we have a small fan base.
I like the fact that we win some games, draw some, and lose some.
I like the fact that when I go to a match (typically in London) I recognize a bunch of the Liverpool away fans that I've sat next to previously, and some recognize me.
I can visit a club as an away fan, get a ticket sitting in with their fans without being abused, or asked to leave, and then have a chat with opposition fans at half time.
I love it that there are way less abusive remarks shouted from the crowd, the chants tend to be bigging up our own players, rather than abusing the opposition players and fans.

A lot of that exists because we are 4,500 fans and Womens football is still quite small, and would change if we had 45,000 fans.

I think having a women’s stadium in central Liverpool would bring big crowds in. I would imagine you would get a lot of families who wanted a day out with the kids, as well as the Lesbian contingent who follow all women’s sport including women’s tennis etc.  Women are more marketable than men and Joey Barton aside most men I know actually like women and were very invested in the England Women’s team for example. Funnily enough it was a game at Goodison in 1920 which saw women’s football banned. The FA were spooked when there was a crowd of 53k and 14 k locked outside for a women’s charity match.

I knew womens football had been banned by he FA, but had no idea about why/when, thats absolutely crazy.

Also, you mentioned "Women are more marketable than men and Joey Barton aside most men I know actually like women and were very invested in the England Women’s team..."

A lot of the men I speak to have deep misconceptions about the quality of the womens game, also seem to be somehow put off by the number of mums and kids in the crowd, and the socio-political logos (...probably not the best place to debate that sensitive subject).

Do you think Liverpool Women should lean their marketing towards Families, and not try compete with the mens game whose crowds are still very male dominated?

I ask because that may be a good way of growing the club without throwing away the safe, inclusive and friendly atmosphere that the womens game currently has. Though I suspect we may lose out on the people who have the most cash to spare.

Does anyone know if there'll be a preseason tournament this summer?

I ask, because I went to the Toulouse pre-season tournament last summer, would love to go to another, but would need time to plan/save.
