we are a strange breed the human race and without wishing to generalise I would say the following to 99% of people: -

You are what you eat.
Diets are short-term and by that it could mean a few months or a few years.
Healthy eating through a varied diet and a healthy lifestyle is life long if you want it to be.
Changing the mind-set.

I had a real wake up call 5 months back - Ive lost just over 2 stone, seem to be stuck at 13st 10-12 at moment. I want to get down to 12 stone and it may take me a year or 2 but I will do it. The gym is my friend and I like going.

BUT - and this is not rock science, just watch what you eat. 2500 cals a day for a bloke. Count them up as you go. I may be looking at this too simplistically, but if you do no exercise and eat 2500 a day you will stay the same weight. Eat 2000 or less a day and do nothing you will lose a little bit perhaps. Eat 2500 and exercise and you will lose weight. Eat 2000 or less a day and exercise and it will fall off.

I remember a fairly old lady talking to her friend in the street when I first started exercising 5 months back and it stuck with me. Whats your secret her friend said to her - 'eat less, walk more'

Tune in next week when I will be taking the sucking eggs class.  :P

I've been averaging about 1,300 net for the last couple of weeks and have lost the grand sum of a pound a week. Very annoying.

Finally nudged another kilo off, despite a rather beer heavy weekend.  Down to below 15st now.  Need to keep going, but exercise is deffo the key for me, piled the weight on when I couldn't exercise, now I'm out on the bike again the pounds are slowly starting to come off.

Hows everyone keep track of their calorie intake?

I might get a couple of chicken breast, marinade them the night before or wrap them with Parma ham and roast them and have veg with it. I have no idea how many calories I've consumed.

Tonight might have noodles with black bean sauce, veg and chicken breast. No idea how many calories.

I use the myfitnesspal app for android with my daily calorie intake set at 1600. Is this too low or about right?

There are apps and stuff for calorie counting, but I get bored of them and give up on them pretty quickly.

I tend to look at the nutritional info on the back of foods when I'm doing my weekly shop. Generally I'll just look at the calories and the fat content, and only buy if they're reasonable. Anything over about 4 or 5g of fat per serving, I'll put back on the shelf.

The key for me is not have any crap foods in the house. You've then got no option.

To steal a cliche: Patience is a virtue.

Try not to get too downhearted if you don't see quick results, sometimes it will take weeks and months before you notice a difference. Like many have said, 'diets' are short termism at its absolute worst and not the way to go. It needs to be a lifestyle change and that means permanent.

Personally, I don't pay any attention at all to the scales, whether i'm looking to gain or lose weight, it's all about what's peering back at me from the mirror and whether i'm happy with it. If you feel happier in yourself with the changes that you've made then that's the best start you can have. Stick with it and remember why you started implementing those changes in the first place and you will get where you want to be, in time.

Let myself go today. 2 kitkats, 2 biscuits, and a bag of cheese and onion. been off that lot for 3 weeks. Finished off with shepards pie, 2 servings now.

May aswell wash it all down with a nice cold coke.

Guess its down to feeling fucked off with everything today.

Off peak is normally 9am til about 4-4:30 during the week and all weekend I think , ie when the gyms are quietest. Peak is the times when everyone is most likely to go (ie before or after work).

Keep in mind you have 2-3lbs random variation in your body weight based on the time of day, how much you've been eating, drinking, if you've recently exercised etc. etc.

Obviously if you're consistently seeing the loss with repeated measurements then you're good to go.

BTW: My personal best is losing 15 lbs in 3 weeks. I was at 198 lbs and training for a 30k run, running 30-40k total per week in training. Meanwhile I was eating like a pig. I reduced my food intake to a reasonable level while continuing to train, and I lost 15lbs in 3 weeks leading up to the race. Needless to say, it really improved my performance.

Looking to lose a bit of stomach fat and tone up a bit over the summer.  Let myself go a bit recently during exam period and then working at McNasty's hasn't helped much either (free meals when I'm working).  At the start of the year I managed to run once a day for about 3 and a half months straight and was feeling really good about myself but I've dropped off a bit.  Started running recently, just need to get a bit of a better diet.

3 years ago I weighed 16st 5lb i'd let myself go & put over 2 stone on.

Firstly I cut down on the shit I was eating particularly bread & biscuits. I don't eat biscuits anymore & haven't for 3 years. I was eating approx 2-3 packs a week. After cutting down I went to approx 15st quite easily with no excercise for the last two years I've got back into excercise.

I go to the gym every lunchtime at work & do weights. On most rest days I run 4 miles & play 5 a side once a week.

I now weigh ( fluctuate) approx 13st 9-12lb. I've lost two & half stone & kept the weight off & am at the weight I was through my twenties. I'd love to get to 13st 2-5lb but too content at the moment.

I've never done a diet I don't believe in them it's all about moderation & excercise. I try to eat reasonably healthy some low fat products. Eat less & excercise, excercise, excercise. I'll be honest I get fed up of people moaning there diet isn't working whilst they do no excercise at all. Start with walking if needed.

Good luck to those trying it's hard I was motivated by some mates I work with who are really into there fitness & I didn't want to be the fat bloke when we were out having a bevy & to not be called a fat c*nt .

Firstly: 88 pounds in 22 weeks! :shocked

Secondly: Well in mate! :wellin That is really a feat imo! I've lost 12 kilos (appr 2 stones if I'm right?) over the last 6 months. Bear in mind I have a very physical job where I lift between 5-8 tons every day which means I get my exercise. On top of that I've taken up running to get more stamina. The reason why I've not lost more weight is that I've gained at least 5 kilos of muscle so I've gone from a size 38" in jeans to 32" but I'm still a XL in shirts/t-shirts. ;D My jobs includes a lot of lifts so my forearms are like PopEye (almost) since I have to grip everything I handle during the day...

What was your starting weight? If you don't mind me asking!

Starting weight was 513 pound currently 425.

So for the amount I have to lose 4 pound a week average is a fair amount I'd say and not unhealthy.

Only one thing I have cut out completely and that is alcohol, well and the takeaways that come after the drinking.

At the start I was that unfit I couldn't make it round my block.

Now my exercise is

monday, Wednesday, Friday -
Bike 15 mins.
Weights - 10 shoulder lifts, 10 bench press, 10 squats, Then with dumbbells 10 pec fly, 10 side lifts, 10 curls.
Walk round block [about half a mile]

Tuesday, Thursday -
Bike 20 mins
Walk round block

Saturday, Sunday -
Walk round longer walk [about a mile]

Food wise I have Cereal in morning, sandwich and crisps at dinner, then a cooked meal at night normally A stir fry or veg and chicken or spag bol or a jacket or fish.  Also have a yoghurt banana and 4 crackers in-between as well also a apple now and then.  Also have a treat meal every now and then.

Also make sure I have at least 3 litres of water a day.

That right there is the key point of everything you said. Without a goal, a motivation to change your lifestyle then you won't do it. As soon as you can't be bothered you'll revert to whatever you've been doing up to that point because it's easy and it's familiar.

I've never done a diet I don't believe in them it's all about moderation & excercise. I try to eat reasonably healthy some low fat products. Eat less & excercise, excercise, excercise. What's wrong with the knee, Jon?

Suspected arthritis in both knees. Still a bit sore today with the left one playing up since tuesday. Got to pop out shortly but hopefully if no real pain after walking to postal delivery office (got a package to collect) then i can bugger off swimming this afternoon.

That's a bugger!

My family has a history of weak knees. My granddad had both his knees relpaced before he passed and my dad had operations in both his knees as well before he died. I'm 38 and I struggle at times to get out of bed and get going if/when I've been out on a 7-10 K run or been working hard (I deliver beer in kegs and rent out beer cooling equipment which is heavy as f*ck). I was out on a 5 k run on wednesday and thursday and yesterday was like I was not funny. My knees were aching like hell and being at a concert stading up for 3 hrs on a concrete floor last night didn't make things better for me today.

I sure hope it isn't arthritis - have you had any tests done to shed some light over the problem?

No offense mate but that must be some fucking bike if you still weigh 30 stone.

JLStretton - 3L of water a day is a lot. My understanding is that science is starting to debunk the idea what we need to drink "8 glasses" (2L) per day when most people will get at least that much from a normal healthy diet supplemented with the occasional drink (tea, coffee, milk etc).

Perhaps some of your weight is fluid retention and drowning yourself in water every day isn't going to help. Plus, too much water dilutes your system and you actually end up running low on the salts etc that your body needs.

Don't drink anything else apart from water.  Apart from milk on cereal.
