Punk might be dead, hardcore/punk is still very much alive. I still enjoy the 80's-bands as well. Minor Threat, Negative Approach, Bad Brains, Black Flag, ... Awesome stuff there.
Lots of bands (like Fucked Up or Pissed Jeans for example) have just taken that style a step forward these days.

I love loads of music, personally I think good music pretty much died with punk (obviously there's exceptions), they threw the baby out with the bath water unfortunately & good musicianship has been scoffed at ever since (in British popular music anyway). There was the odd decent punk tune & I don't think there was much wrong with the sentiment at the time but The Clash - the way they protrayed themselves as the intellectual punk group with their crap cod-reggae just don't sit well with me.

The long & short of it is I don't like the Clash, in fact I think they were terrible, to say that I don't have any taste because of that is ludicrous.

I never understand this 'cod reggae' bollocks - they had stuff produced by Lee Scratch Perry, worked with Mikey Dread, Don Letts, they were as into the genre as anyone else and it's actually proper reggae on stuff like 'Armagideon Time'. Nothing 'cod' about it. Cod reggae is mid 80s Sting.

Greenday are fun, throwaway nonsense for the kids. Basically 'my first guitar band' for 12 yr olds, I'm not knocking them, I quite like a few of their songs and they're good at what they do.

Well, on a technical level you are right. But that was kind of the point. It was originally just about believing that anyone could pick up a guitar, learn a few chords, then play as loud as they could. Energy and raw enthusiasm and a fuck you attitude that found an audience that didn't want any more leftover 60's hippy shite or overblown 70's prog-rock wankery. I, for one, am incredibly grateful for it.

Fookin' great tune that. Although they are more pop rock than punk. Its the same with Blink 182. I like Greenday, and Blink for that matter. I'm a sucker for a catchy guitar driven melody.
