What is punk about Green Day this century?

This.

If we're talking about the best punk produced in this decade then Propagandhi have brought out some fucking brilliant stuff and haven't rested on their laurels. Strung Out 'n' all. Actually, everyone that was a better punk band than Green Day ten years ago - and there were plenty - have all brought out better stuff this decade as well.

Way back in the 80's, I saw written on a bog wall in Huyton, "Greenday aren't punk, but they are shite'. The Clash and the Ramones were the best punk bands.

Its a good shout IMO, Great live which is always important, the only thing that would stop the claim is they did go in a different direction the last 2 albums but they earnt that right

dont kid yourself guys just because they got popular and are liked by a younger audience or dont have any hard hitting lyrics doesnt mean its not punk, theres different genres of punk

Anway, Mark Perry was right and Strummer endorsed his statement that, "Punk died the day the Clash signed to CBS". That was in 77.

Good topic though, loads a room for debate. Anyway, he did say this century so that rules out the Clash and the Ramones in which case I'd deny that there have been any genuine punk bands post 77.

Words fall short in capturing the hatred I feel for this POP-band. If you want real punkrock, check out the Bronx, the Dwarves, Pissed Jeans, Fucked Up or even Rancid. If you want melodic punkpop, you should try Alkaline Trio or Hot Water Music.

While Green Day may be good at what they do, it is corporate punk to me.

Although viewed as hardcore, give me Discharge or early Bad Brains any day of the week.

Even Jello Biafra would back the fuck off if he caught a glimpse of those hats. It's just a good thing that god decided to split the essence of punk equally between two bands, to save the world from just being turned into one giant riot by how hardcore they are. In his wisdom, to dilute the sheer essence of punk, he gave us Good Charlotte, to rock just as hard and stop us from all going apeshit on one and other over those guys being too fucking punk!

You could spare yourself a few minutes with the one on the top left of the Good Charlotte picture. He doesn't look like he's got long left anyways, unless the latest fashion to hit the Banana Republic is the Christian Bale look from the Machinist.

Punk served it's purpose in the mid to late 70's. It was a racket then & it's a racket now. Green Day are pathetic, as were The Clash & then you've got John Lydon's butter advert.

Green Day are the punk band we loved from the states till they signed for corporate and came out with their first mega album in mid 90's...they have gone from strenght to strenght. But just because they sign for corporate doesn't mean they sold out.

At least they can reach a wider audience now.

The Clash were fucking brilliant. Mainly because they realised punk was a dead end and made something more of their music.

All these new punks have none of the reggae influence. There's no variety to it, and it's pure commodification.

Their music was garbage as was their arty farty facade, their music actually makes me feel sick.
