Pique will be the bigger loss than Puyol I think.

In turn, Fabregas, Gallas and Arshavin will be pretty big misses for Arsenal.

***off topic rant***

Fuck me.

Completly unrelated note but just watching footage of that copper who's gotten away with beating a female protestor. He's well over 6ft and built like a brick shithouse, you can clearly see him more or less ignoring the woman until she shouts something at him, she makes no move whatsoever towards him, the only aggression is her shouting, he whips out his baton and smacks her a few times...the verdict?

Self defence.

Because she had some kind of can in her somewhat upraised right arm, which she made no aggressive motion with whatsoever. Self defence. Fucking hell - surely for it to be self defence there has to be some actual aggression towards you that you're defending against? Bah. Anyway. Back to the footy! :)

yeah - the carton of orange juice and camera she was holding were considered potential weapons by the copper apparently..

Yup, as was said before I think they're bigger misses for Arsenal than Puyol and Pique for Barca - and I think there's a good chance that Puyol's red will be rescinded if Barca appeal too.

...and he hasn't done that much in attack this season either. May well be the most over-rated player in the prem at the moment, I reckon.

I just hope he is this over-rated the next time he comes to Anfield ;)

To me it looked like the linesman gave the pen.the ref never blew for it and fabregas was starting to make his way back to midfield... How can the linesman give a decision like that from a position about 10 times further away from the incident than the ref? Ever since they made them 'referee's assistants' they've gone totally power crazy

Sure, but that doesn't have much to do with comparing the relative merits of Barca's two centre backs.

Fabregas looked off-side to me as well from Bentdner's header.. haven't seen a replay though.

That was a nice finish by Milito for Inter.

That 90 second period in the first half where Barcelona had about 4 clear chances to score was one of the silliest things I've seen in football. It was like a five-a-side scramble.

And how Bendtner missed that header, I'll never know.
Was a good save, but Valdez should have have had no chance.

You're right.  Please carry on.

Pique and Puyol are first choice, but their two replacements/back-ups cost £35m combined.
Your turn.

Aye, I'm not having a go at Barca's spending though, I'm pointing out that their replacement centre backs aren't in the same mould as Sol Campbell.  They're actually pretty good.

I think the only Italian in the starting lineup was Materazzi, and even he started because the Brazilian was out. ;)
It is not very relevat really, put Carra a couple of seasons in barsa, and He would  bring the ball out as pique did in the first half  and would say to Fabregas: 'Oh...so are you the tiqui-taca team from England? I will show you who invented this mate'  He also  would become indulgent, soft and not competitive at all  -As a typical Spanish player-in the second half , and everying will end up 2-2.
There are factors in Footballl that are  contagious, almost genetic. Italian teams are very...very competitive-With and without italians players-We like it or not.

nothing i guess but wouldn't you rather be on an arsenal site ?

I tend to prefer non Arsenal sites just after a game, odd I'll admit.

Didn't think Walcott was that good, too many poor crosses and the shot was poor but sometimes he seems to lift the team by coming on. Don't know if it is because defenses fall back and allow us to push up or something else entirely

I think it's similar to how Babel was for a while for us - if legs are tiring (and in this case against a VERY attacking full-back too, who probably should have restrained himself more at this stage) then fresh pace alone can be a very effective attribute. Defoe for England is another great example - not really up to much starting, but he's fantastic to have as a sub late in the game.

Yeah, I agree. It's clear Barcelona have good replacements and should comfortably win at home, but after 20 minutes tonight it seemed clear that Arsenal were going to get raped.
A lot gets said about Barcelona protecting their defence so well the centre backs dont need to do anything ( I don't mean you here), but that's not true. They work fucking hard and Pique and Puyol hit it off big time early in their partnership.
I doubt Guardiola will be thinking 'Ah fuck it, those two won't be missed with the gems I've got in midfield keeping the ball.' He'll be pissed off at his team being weakened and Wenger will be delighted at any little advantage like that.

If Barca had a decent striker up front, instead of that useless big nosed twat, they'd have scored 10 before half time.  Despite the barnstorming first 20 minutes I thought both sides were under par, though there is a clear gulf between the ability of the two sides.  I fully expect Barca to win comfortably in the second leg even without their main centrebacks....if Iniesta is fit, I think they'll steamroller Arsenal.

And I hate Fabregas.  Little c*nt.

Aye, but what's Barca's net spend like? They've sold players as well.

That's another one of those myths that has somehow become the truth and it's actually the one that's the most annoying about Barca. Yes, they have loads of home-grown players and yes, they are not spending shitloads like Real Madrid, but it's not as if they're not buying loads of expensive players, either. I've had a look at www.transfermarkt.de, a German site that collects most of the transfer-news and even if it's not the most accurate source, the numbers will be more or less correct as they've been reported by the media. According to that, they've spent 50m Euros and more in the last three seasons including this one. In 06-07 it was 18m Euros after making a profit of 10m in 05-06.
