Does anyone know if this has been picked up for a 4th season or is the last episode gonna be the end of it all i.e. the Kirk Douglas film ending?

There is going to be a next series, already done some of the casting I believe.

The finale is on in less than an hour. I normally watch 1-2 days later, but I can't wait this time. Expect a post from me two hours something along the lines of, "fucking hell!"

Blessed lad, tell me there was a better episode of Lost than that? Amazing show, just amazing.
'Despite their  cup pedigree - since they've returned to the top flight in 1962 - Everton have, after today's results, once again gone further in the FA Cup than their much vaunted neighbours. For the record it's Everton 23 Liverpool 22  and 7 ties in 52 seasons'

Well, the third series just finished, and there was someone else playing Spartacus...or you could consider it the second, but there will be another and as far as I know the same guy is playing Spartacus. So far there has been

Blood and Sand - Andy Playing Spartacus
Gods of the Arena - before Spartacus was captured, he isn't in it
Vengeance - the one that just finished, Liam as Spartacus.

There will be at least one more, I don't think they've said it will be the last, but they are going to run out of plot.

Many Thanks to you KBBIX!

Spoiler
My Missus turned into a mad woman when Navia took on Asher, and when she stuck the sword up his skirt she cheered! I'm doubled over holding my nuts and she's shouting, "Cut them off girl!" I also thought Glabba was dispatched in a particularly spectacular way! They will need a whole new crew as they were ticking them off last night.

Like Henry said, I kind of warmed to Liam, but still think he was going to struggle to top Andy. Still a bloody shame.

The mrs decided to give this a go, so we watched the the first one of Blood and Sand last night. It was so terrible, no wonder it took me about 3 months to go back to it after the first. I told her to give it at least three episodes.

I don't know, this season was good, but there was something missing apart from him. Andy was a big loss, but the new guy did quite well, just don't know what it was.

Probably the most consistent season but did feel like a little spark or a little piece of magic. I think the change of setting, as it were, meant they lost certain awesome aspects: the gladiator fights, the anyone can die at any time, not sure who will emerge on top at end of episode (at least in rebels vs Romans). I have to say I enjoyed the Romans more then I did the rebels. It felt like the stuff in Capua followed the other series in what it did, with the constant shifting of alliances, constant twists and turns, uncertainty who would come out on top. A lot of intresting characters whereas Spartacus and co somehow made it so it was hard to back their anti-slavery camapign. Didn't think it would be possible for me to lack sympathy with slaves rebelling against their oppressors but this lot managed it.

My main concern is that pretty much all the best characters were from the past two shows. The new characters were lucky if I cared about them enough to care if they died or not.

If ever there was a line to quote in a meeting that is it! Probably end up in HR but it would be worth it. You would have to say it with that Snarl as well.

Alternately,

"By Jupiters cock...have you lost wit? Stop tongue lest you find yourself parted from it and see it fed to the dogs!"

I agree MH the newer characters weren't as strong. I think I missed the politics and the intrigue from the first series and the shift in focus onto the escape changed it. I don't suppose they were supposed to be too likeable though and the tension between them was suppose to lessen as the trust was earned through battle.

I'm not sure it is exactly historical drama though so can't be judged too harshly, they did have bloody good dentists in those days if it was meant to be accurate!

Onwards Brothers! To Rome!

Grabbed this off wiki, from about the point where the last season ended, until Spartacus meets his end. Who knows how many seasons they'll stretch it over.

Spoiler
In the spring of 72 BCE, the slaves left their winter encampments and began to move northward. At the same time, the Roman Senate, alarmed by the defeat of the praetorian forces, dispatched a pair of consular legions under the command of Lucius Gellius Publicola and Gnaeus Cornelius Lentulus Clodianus.[25] The two legions were initially successful—defeating a group of 30,000 slaves commanded by Crixus near Mount Garganus[26]—but then were defeated by Spartacus. These defeats are depicted in divergent ways by the two most comprehensive (extant) histories of the war by Appian and Plutarch.[27][28][29][30]

Alarmed by the apparently unstoppable rebellion, the Senate charged Marcus Licinius Crassus, the wealthiest man in Rome and the only volunteer for the position, with ending the rebellion. Crassus was put in charge of eight legions, approximately 40,000–50,000 trained Roman soldiers,[31][32] which he treated with harsh, even brutal, discipline, reviving the punishment of unit decimation.[33] When Spartacus and his followers, who for unclear reasons had retreated to the south of Italy, moved northward again in early 71 BCE, Crassus deployed six of his legions on the borders of the region and detached his legate Mummius with two legions to maneuver behind Spartacus. Though ordered not to engage the slaves, Mummius attacked at a seemingly opportune moment but was routed.[34] After this, Crassus' legions were victorious in several engagements, forcing Spartacus farther south through Lucania as Crassus gained the upper hand. By the end of 71 BCE, Spartacus was encamped in Rhegium (Reggio Calabria), near the Strait of Messina.

According to Plutarch, Spartacus made a bargain with Cilician pirates to transport him and some 2,000 of his men to Sicily, where he intended to incite a slave revolt and gather reinforcements. However, he was betrayed by the pirates, who took payment and then abandoned the rebel slaves.[34] Minor sources mention that there were some attempts at raft and shipbuilding by the rebels as a means to escape, but that Crassus took unspecified measures to ensure the rebels could not cross to Sicily, and their efforts were abandoned.[35] Spartacus' forces then retreated toward Rhegium. Crassus' legions followed and upon arrival built fortifications across the isthmus at Rhegium, despite harassing raids from the rebel slaves. The rebels were now under siege and cut off from their supplies.[36]

The Fall of SpartacusAt this time, the legions of Pompey returned from Spain and were ordered by the Senate to head south to aid Crassus.[37] While Crassus feared that Pompey's arrival would cost him the credit, Spartacus unsuccessfully tried to reach an agreement with Crassus.[38] When Crassus refused, a portion of Spartacus' forces fled toward the mountains west of Petelia (modern Strongoli) in Bruttium, with Crassus' legions in pursuit.[39] When the legions managed to catch a portion of the rebels separated from the main army,[40] discipline among Spartacus' forces broke down as small groups were independently attacking the oncoming legions.[41] Spartacus now turned his forces around and brought his entire strength to bear on the legions in a last stand, in which the slaves were routed completely, with the vast majority of them being killed on the battlefield.[42]

The final battle that saw the defeat of Spartacus in 71 BCE took place on the present territory of Senerchia on the right bank of the river Sele in the area that includes the border with Oliveto Citra up to those of Calabritto, near the village of Quaglietta, in High Sele Valley, which at that time was part of Lucania. In this area, in the past decades, there have been finds of armor and swords of the Roman era.

The eventual fate of Spartacus himself is unknown, as his body was never found, but he is accounted by historians to have perished in battle along with his men.[43] Six thousand survivors of the revolt captured by the legions of Crassus were crucified, lining the Appian Way from Rome to Capua.[44]

If they go based on the history (Not sure how legit, it is wiki after all.) they could easily push two more seasons out.

I think there is too much to stuff all in to one season, especially as there would have to be three major battles.

Start off the next season with Spartacus and Crixus splitting paths, all the Roman debate on who to take down Spartacus and the first two battles taking place (Crixus losing and Spartacus winning.). Think that is more than enough to base a season off of.

Then they can lead into the season after that by showing the Romans tightening the leash on Spartacus up until his eventual death in war.
