He's a good player but this tournament needs the big players to start showing something. Interest seems way down this year. Expanding the format might've darted everybody out by the time it actually gets good. Not a fan.

Agree. Not a fan of the new format at all.

Not a fan of the PL going on for about 5 months either if I am honest.

Some game that, Dobey played brilliantly but Anderson just came through in the clutch moments. Hope Lewis starts well and puts MVG under the pump a bit.

Wade out to Ryan Joyce. Wade was pretty awful. Some strange antics on the oche as well

Wade is a tit but may have given Van Gerwen a tougher game. The crowd are still doing my head in, a lot of them were facing the wrong way for most of the match singing the usual stupid songs.
It shouldn't affect my enjoyment but it is doing.

So the last 8 is:

MVG (1) v Ryan Joyce
Dave Chisnall (12) v Gary Anderson (4)
Luke Humphries v Michael Smith (10)
Nathan Aspinall v Brendan Dolan

4 unseeded still left in & at least 1 in the bottom half in the semis.

Dolan 45, Aspinall 73, Joyce 74, Humphries 90 (rankings in the order of merit).

My thoughts of an MVG v Cross final has gone t**s up so you've got to think Smith has a great chance of making his 1st World final.

So the last 8 is:

MVG (1) v Ryan Joyce
Jamie Lewis (28) or Dave Chisnall (12) v Gary Anderson (4)
Rob Cross (2)/Luke Humphries v Ryan Searle/Michael Smith (10)
Nathan Aspinall v Brendan Dolan

5 unseeded still left in & at least 1 in the bottom half in the semis.

Dolan 45, Searle 61, Aspinall 73, Joyce 74, Humphries 90 (rankings in the order of merit).

But on the other hand, we could get 3 of the top 4 seeds in the semis.

Think it's going to be MVG v Cross part 2 in the final.

Anderson and Smith might have something to say about that.

Be really interesting to how the prize money changes the premier league picks

MvG, Cross and Anderson are pretty much safe picks

Chizzy could force his way into the top 10 if he can make the semis for example

A Tory, a worker and an immigrant are sat round a table. There's a plate of 10 biscuits in the middle. The Tory takes 9 then turns to the worker and says "that immigrant is trying to steal your biscuit"

Jesus Christ, if Anderson or MVG reach the final don't even bother watching. They're going to be playing a BDOer. Michael Smith is our only hope of a semi competitive final.

You say that after a practical unknown won it last year. Great logic

Cross had been on a run of consistently good form for a good 5-6 months in the run up to last year's world championship.

Ok, but he still wasn’t expected to win it. What a lot of rubbish to suggest not watching the final if an outsider gets there. Humphries and Aspinall especially have performed well up to now

Not remotely comparable. Cross had reached the final of the European Championships, QF at the Grand Slam and SF of the Players Championships Final. Cross then was roughly what Michael Smith is now, not Nathan Aspinall, Brendan Dolan or Liam Humphries. If Aspinall, Dolan or Humphries reach the final against Van Gerwen it won't go past 8 sets. They'll need to average in excess of a ton for the better part of 40 legs to keep up. No chance.

I never suggested they would beat MVG. He is clear favourite against anyone on current form. You suggesting they are BDO standard is what I took issue with especially after Humphries just beat the world champion

Somebody on Twitter put up the tournament averages so far. Maybe slightly above BDO standard but they aren't even over the real marathon distances yet and they're not approaching a ton. How can you have faith in a decent game when we've seen MVG and Anderson maintain well over a 100 for about 15 hours.

@OcheBalboa1

Tournament averages of QF's (Overall)

Michael Van Gerwen 104.39 (1st)
Michael Smith 98.43 (6th)
Gary Anderson 97.41 (9th)
Dave Chisnall 97.21 (10th)
Luke Humphries 95.45 (13th)
Nathan Aspinall 93.79 (24th)
Brendan Dolan 91.98 (40th)
Ryan Joyce 88.53 (61st)

Ok, how about because Anderson’s been pushed to a deciding set in his last two games? Just for starters. He’s not hit a ton average himself yet.

Anderson often brings it in the semis and finals though, especially against Van Gerwen recently. That final set the other night was frightening, if that's a sign of him getting into it we're in for a monster semi-final.

Anderson is potentially vulnerable but if Van Gerwen and Anderson aren't playing each other in a couple of days it would be a very big surprise.

It could well be a one-sided final, but then again it might not be. We'll see.

It will be interesting to see how the viewing figures compare this year though, especially if we do get a rank outsider in the final. I think people love an upset up to a point. It's like Cardiff making it to the FA Cup final or something, people love the story but then stop watching.
