It's just worrying that we might have to play one senior central midfielder in the game alongside Guthrie. I don't fancy us putting two youngsters in the middle of the park to fend for themselves. However, we have only two experience central midfielders left without injuries and if anything happens to one of them, we're mighty screwed.

dudek
peltier paletta hobbs darby
pennant guthrie roque hammill
lindfield fowler

martin, antwi, smith, anderson, el zhar, idrizaj, flynn

cant see any point in taking any key players. the likes of zenden, aurelio, gonzalez would have played if it wasnt for their injuries. if we get an injury in key areas we are fucked and cant risk it. the chance for the first team to get a full weeks training and rest in will be of great benefit. cant really affect confidence if we lose as none of these players will play again for a while. will be a chance to measure how good they are.

why?

it will be great experience for them.

it will be like a training match anyway.

i'd go with:

dudek

roque palleta hyppia aurelio (if fit)

pennant peltier guthrie hamill

el zhar fowler

subs: anderson, martin, antwi, lindfield, etc

Rafas definately got some difficult decisions to make.On the one hand I wouldnt like to see too many 1st teamers for obvious reasons but wouldnt want to see a team full of kids getting a good hiding either.A mixture of both probably bearing in mind Gala have absolutely nothing to play for.
Also some of the players probably want to play as we won a cup there not long ago.
I'd go with -
                                          Dudek
   Peltier      Paletta       Agger      Riise

     Pennant      Alonso     Guthrie     Garcia

               Fowler      Crouch

it'll do them good. the result or score means absolutely nothing anyway, it's all about giving them some big game experience.

When I said I wouldnt like to see a team full of kids getting a good hiding I also think you have to consider our  reputation as one of Europes great clubs-might be a meaningless game but a 4 or 5  goal hammering wouldnt look good

if it was a competitive game then i would agree, but it's a nothing game, as in means nothing. so the result and scoreline are null and void.

I don't think Galatasary will be busting a gut to win this either; they can only finish bottom, so I would expect them to field some reserves also.
Anybody who thinks we should play either Gerrard or Alonso, given injury problems in midfield, are really silly.
As somebody who is normally annoyed if Rafa rests key players, I would be annoyed if he risks anybody here, particularly given hectic run of games coming up over next few weeks.

Galatasary won't being trying to dissapoint their supporters either who will want a big scalp--Liverpool FC.

So we need to put out a competitive side.

I'm expecting a though match. Galatasaray haven't been playing well in the Champions League, but we are playing in Istanbul and I think that the atmosphere can get a bit tense and hope that Rafa will save some of the first team players and use some of our talents, but not all at once, but a win would with out a doubt give the youngsters a lot of confidence.
I'm looking forward to see players like Peltier and Guthrie given a chance.

I hope to see a line up like this:

-----------Dudek-----------
Peltier-Hyypia-Paletta-Aurelio
Pennant-Gerrard-Guthrie-Riise
-------Bellamy-Fowler-------
Subs:
Reina
Agger
Carragher
Anderson
Hamill
Luis Garcia
Kuyt

Eventhough we are through to the next round, I would love to see us getting a victory and ending the group with a victory and also give some of the young players some confidence.
2-1 victory too Liverpool. Bellamy and Fowler scores the goals.

Come on you Reds!

and that's worth all the travelling and risking key players in the busiest stage of the season?

god forbid we lost any of gerrard, alonso or kuyt going into the xmas period just because a few fans were worried about the media reaction to a defeat in a meaningless game.

GERRARD RESTED FOR EUROPE BY BENITEZ
Posted 04/12/06 07:47
EmailPrintSave

Steven Gerrard was one of several members of the first-team squad left behind as Liverpool flew out for their Champions League clash against Galatasaray in Istanbul.

Liverpool top their group, giving manager Rafael Benitez the opportunity to rest key men.

Skipper Gerrard, Jose Reina, Sami Hyypia and Steve Finnan were all left behind - none is injured.

Benitez brought in a host of youngsters, including full-back Stephen Darby, captain of last season's FA Youth Cup-winning side, for his first call-up to the senior squad.

Other youngsters included were Danny Guthrie, Lee Peltier, goalkeeper David Martin and midfielder Miki Roque.

Team (from): Dudek, Agger, Riise, Alonso, Crouch, Fowler, Pennant, Bellamy, Kuyt, Carragher, Paletta, Luis Garcia, Guthrie, Peltier, Darby, Martin, Anderson, Roque.

And speaking from a rather pessimistic point of view ... we got off rather lightly with the 3 injuries we got against PSV at home (in another, arguably, equally meaningless game).

We may not be so fortunate on Tuesday.

Got off lightly with 3 injuries during the game?

GERRARD OUT AS BOSS PUTS FAITH IN YOUTH
Jimmy Rice .TV
Rafael Benitez left Steven Gerrard, Sami Hyypia, Steve Finnan and Jose Reina on Merseyside when his side flew to Istanbul this morning.
The Liverpool boss decided to rest the quartet after already securing top spot in Group C.

FA Youth Cup winners Miki Roque, Stephen Darby and Paul Anderson could all feature against Galatasaray after being included in the 18-man squad.

The full party is: Dudek, Agger, Riise, Alonso, Crouch, Fowler, Pennant, Bellamy, Kuyt, Carragher, Paletta, Luis Garcia, Guthrie, Peltier, Darby, Martin, Anderson, Roque.

I don't think Rafa will go mad at all. He'll try some new players, but I think that the leaving at home of Gerrard, Reina, Finnan and Hyypia is about the long long flight across Europe.

Hammill is not in the squad. El Zhar is not eligible.

Squad is:
Dudek, Agger, Riise, Alonso, Crouch, Fowler, Pennant, Bellamy, Kuyt, Carragher, Paletta, Luis Garcia, Guthrie, Peltier, Darby, Martin, Anderson, Roque.

I imagine team will be
Dudek

Peltier
Paletta
Agger
Riise

Luis Garcia
Xabi
Guthrie
Pennant

Fowler or Crouch
Bellamy

Seeing as Galatasaray wear red and yellow stripes, won't we be wearing our nice third kit. Its so much better than that yellow vomit second kit!

"could all feature" does not sound like they will start - but of course .tv wont know Rafa's mind. That Peltier and Guthrie are not mentioned might be because they both have featured in the first team before.
Garcia, Dudek, Paletta, Pennant and Fowler all should start, they need the playing time. Crouch will likely want a whole game as well, he has been used sparingly lately.
Peltier and Guthrie in center midfield, with Darby at right back. Riise at left back cause there is not really someone else for there (had expected James Smith to go). That gives the following team

                      Dudek
Darby    Paletta     Agger    Riise
                    Peltier
Pennant                             Garcia
                    Guthrie
               Crouch        Fowler

Enough experienced player not being overawed our easily outmuscled by Gala, but still giving several youngster a chance. I expect Anderson to come on early in 2nd half, unless he starts at Garcia's place

More of the same stuff:

Dudek to make emotional return to Turkey for Liverpool
By Jeremy Butler

LIVERPOOL, England, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek returns to the scene of his Champions League final heroics on Tuesday to make a rare start for Rafael Benitez's side.

The Poland international, who has started just one League Cup tie this season and is second choice behind Pepe Reina, takes over in goal for Liverpool's Group C finale against Galatasaray at Istanbul's Ataturk Stadium.

Dudek's penalty saves at the same venue helped Liverpool overcome AC Milan to become European champions in 2005.

Liverpool are already through to the last 16 this season and Benitez will rest some key players against the Turks, including captain Steven Gerrard.

"Jerzy will play in the game," Benitez told reporters. We have qualified and will use youngsters and squad players in Istanbul."

Gerrard, Sami Hyypia, Steve Finnan and Reina have been left behind in Liverpool with Benitez taking unknown reserve players Miki Roque, Stephen Darby and Paul Anderson in their place.

"Jerzy will play in the game," Benitez told reporters. We have qualified and will use youngsters and squad players in Istanbul."

How do the likes of Carra and Alonso fit in there? ;)

It still looks like a decent squad and it will be nice to see some of the young lads in action.

It's just worrying that we might have to play one senior central midfielder in the game alongside Guthrie. I don't fancy us putting two youngsters in the middle of the park to fend for themselves. However, we have only two experience central midfielders left without injuries and if anything happens to one of them, we're mighty screwed.
Just play 2 youngsters and don't worry about it.

If we lose, we lose. Guthrie looks good enough and Peltier is suppose to be a holding player. We can't risk Alonso getting injured again tomorrow.

We have 3 very winnable League games coming up and we need him fit for that.

Of course, I want us to win in Istanbul but everyone can understand why we should be resting top players pre-Christmas especially with our injury problems in mid-park.

I also think the young boys can give a bit more effort plus if they get suspended for the last 16 it doesn't matter.

Doing this may allow us to put out a slightly stronger side in the League Cup quarter final which is a big game for us.

Looking forward to this match and seeing what potential these youngsters have to offer us. I especially hope to see Anderson play a part because he has looked extremely impressive in the reserves and youth matches over the last couple of years. Hopefully they can thrive in this big game atmosphere. Should be an emotional night reliving all those beautiful memories from the 25th May 2005.  ;)
