Do shut up. If he didn't fancy him he wouldn't have even bothered trying him at right midfield and bringing a new dimension to his game. He obviously saw something. The fact that he stayed is down to Rafa getting the best out of him and the lad finally settling down and starting to work hard at his game.

i don't know why I'm wasting time correcting imbeciles on here. Rafa didn't fancy him, because he took one look at him after he arrived and signed a replacement. This was Rafa's first signing for the club. That suggests to me Rafa's first Impressions were he didn't think Finnan was up to the task. Finnan ended up playing right midfield because of the injury to Nunez. Rafa had NO alternatives.  Finnan than started playing well. Whether that was down to what Finnan did for himself, or whether Rafa decided to get involved, I don't know. What the facts remain that Rafa didn't rate him when he arrived.

Exactly, first of all, Aurelio did not play that many matches, when he played he was mostly average, sometimes very poor and a few times pretty good.

But suddenly he is praised as the best LB in the league, it seems to me that people only remember the two-three good matches he played for us.

When he is back from injury I guess reality will strike back, its often like this, the injured players are great at least as long as they are injured and people don't get reminded on how they actually perform.

You do realise the poor performances were when he first joined, the decent ones came after that and the 3/4 good performances were in a row just before he got injured. It's called settling in.
When he put in those excellent performances he showed certain abilities that Riise has never shown since he's been here - even on form. The only area in which Riise excels above Aurelio is his stamina.
Balotelli, Falcao, Cavani...

I'll be shocked if it's anyone other Etoo. Etoo or no-one. Simples.

In fact, I'll do you all a favor and ban myself from the January transfer window forum if we get anyone other than Etoo.

Given how portly he's looking these days, I would even question that.

You know NOTHING about football if you believe Riise is class. You must be a shite footballer yourself too. Riise is technically inept, atrocious at times in fact. No awareness or composure in possession. He has a good shot and works hard. Let's sign Pedro fucking Mendes.

Because i like a player i cant play football? Come down and play with AC Park on a thursday night mate and we'll see. Or you too busy scoffin spring rolls?

It's not true that Riise is flavour of the month whipping boy, plenty of fans who have been saying the same thing for years about him.  He hasn't just lost something, it's something he's never had, he's never been technically good enough and it has a significantly negative effect on our style of play.

At the same time, nobody is saying Aurelio is the best left-back in the league, but when you watch him play, you actually see somebody is at ease in possession, can knock the ball around and is also positive when he hasn't got the ball which most of our players are not (to be fair to Riise he's one of our better ones when he plays in midfield but not at full-back).  The problem with him is his injuries and whether he can fully adapt to the Premiership.

For us to step it up in the league, we need to have true footballers on the pitch, the only player I think we can afford to have who isn't great on the ball is Carragher.  The full-backs need to be able to keep the ball calmly at the back and in our build-up play, and get in behind the opposition full-backs and create chances off the ball.

What do you think Finnan offers to our style of play?

contributes towards one of the (if not the) best defensive unit in the premiership for the last 2-3 yrs (and europe for that matter)

who would you replace him with exactly?

And Riise doesn't or hasn't. Remember Riise has been just as much a part of that defence and imo offers more going forward from full back then Finnan does. I'm happy with both, just don't get why John gets so much stick.

Finnan is a much better crosser of the ball, he supports his winger well and he's more careful with the ball in deep positions.

what idiot said aurelio was better than riise??

There isnt a better left back in the PL at the moment, he has been doing it week in week out for a good few seasons.
Can anyone name a better, more consistent left back over the last 3-4 years?

I'm the idiot in question, but my inability to appreciate Riise's talents at LB is likely a product of watching left backs only since the days of Gerry Byrne.  I'll bow to your greater experience.  As to whether Aurelio is a better choice at the position, I suggest that you watch the Arsenal games in the PL last year.  Both Riise and Aurelio were up against Hleb.  Count the tackles and close-downs.  Not a perfect test, I'll admit, given that Riise was playing at the Emirates, but it does demonstrate the obvious weaknesses in Riise's game at LB when he's one-on-one with an attacker.

And as to who is a better LB in the PL than Riise, I'd say, on current form, almost anybody.

Oh really? Funny cos I dont remember Man U running in and trying to hijack our bid for Riise, but I do with Finnan, An entire season after Finnan had been voted one of the best defenders in the Prem by his fellow pros...

Riise in a nutshell:

- good shot, if wasteful
- good stamina
- likes to get into the box
- fatally one-footed
- hoofs it too often from left back
- can't beat a man except with that patented kick it past him and sprint
- related to this, finds it difficult to find space for himself in tight situations
- decent tackler
- decent heading
- good on the overlap from left back
- inconsistent in positioning at the back
- poor decision making when on attack

In sum:

- passable at left-back - I'm never worried if he is in the team there. He's fine
- simply horrible as a winger

Disagree. He won most of the headers against Gardner. Riise is very good in the air for a full back, certainly better than his other three partners in their position.

About 184 cms and with the highest vertical leap of the back four. I don't see many wide players getting the best of him in the air. In fact they normally target Finnan with high balls. Agger and Carra are good in the air but not exceptionally good. Riise for a full back there isn't many better around in the air.
