Rafa spotted alot of talent that may have improved us. Alves was always Rafa's 1st choice. However I doubt that Dani Alves would be the player he is now if he had come here. Playing for Barca has given him a platform and a fluent attacking system that he thrives in. He wouldnt have developed in our cautious rigid system.

Aguero likewise. In fact if I was a young attacking player with bags of potential, then liverpool would be my last port of call. I'd turn into a full back or defensive minded midfielder within my first year  ;D

Daniel Alves.

There's plenty of others... Vidic, Simao, Villa etc etc... but none quite in that class.

We wanted Agger before we wanted Vidic, from what I recall. The Agger links first came about at the end of the 2005 summer transfer window, the Vidic ones didn't appear until the winter window.

Villa... well we ended up with Torres eventually. It's a miss, but one that doesn't haunt me.

Alves though... fuck me... it's just painful watching him play for Barcelona, just as it was for Sevilla. We could have put him at right back in 06/07 and kept Gerrard on the right because, unlike Sterile Steve, Alves doesn't get a nosebleed when he gets ahead of the ball. When we eventually switched to 4-2-3-1 he could have played that position on the right no question. He's not your typical attacking fullback that needs acres of space to move run into. Christ, he's a sodding #10 playing from right back.

Would have worked equally well at as an attacking right back behind Gerrard or as a right winger ahead of Arbeloa. The guy is just quality. Sickens me to think that we missed out on him.

Blah blah

Too weak to make it in the prem.

With Eto'o, Messi, Henry, Xavi, Iniesta all on that squad Alves gets so much freedom and space that he wouldn't get anywhere else in any other league in the world.

He'd get abused in the prem.

This thread is just a massive kick in the balls. If we had half of those players that we could have had, Liverpool's entire history in the Premier League would be different.

Shearer back in the 90's and then again towards the end of his career.

Roy Evans would still have been in charge if we had.

Not sure about this.

Yes, we did miss out on Greaseball, Alves, Villa, Aguero, but...

Would they be the players they are today had they signed for us?
Hate to say this, but Ronaldo went through 3 years of shittiness, Fergie had an arm around him, INCLUDING the Eng-Portugal episode.
You think there's anyone at Liverpool offering him the same treatment?
Plus, United's way of playing (attck attack attack) must surely benefitted him.

For us - look at Babel. Great great potential, yes he doesn't defend, gets dropped like a hot potato. He's the best example of what we could've done to Ronaldo, Alves, Aguero and Villa.

Pongolle and le Tallec didn't fare better either.

If you're no the developed article, your career would probably have come to a halt in Liverpool.

Dani Alves ---- I'm sure theres a huge deleted thread on him he's the best RB in the world and a player we could've had for £12 million

Everyone missed out Boumsong the shitest CB in the world

Dani Alves has a buyout clause of 90 million Euros which because the state of the pound now is £90 million pounds and at 25 and if Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum did buy us if he is going to splash the cash? Fucking dreaming me

No he didn't

He went through a few seasons of not always having end product. He was far from shit though. You could always see the signs he had the makings of a top top player.

But you're right about them prob not making it under as our game is not attack minded

Shearer back in the 90's and then again towards the end of his career.

Roy Evans would still have been in charge if we had.

http://www.independent.co.UK/sport/football/news-and-comment/press-watch-liverpool-hope-to-recruit-shearer-at-the-end-of-the-season-536964.html

That was very close to happening, before i moved, i used to drink in  the same pub as Aaron Hughes dad, at the time Aaron was still at Newcastle and had said that Bobby Robson wanted to let Shearer leave, because he didn't want to offer him more than a years contract, and we did, but fat Freddie told Bobby that under no circumstances was shearer to be let go.

As for the Ronaldo thing, apparently ourselves and Juve had bid of around 4 mil accepted, but sporting were a feeder club to the manc's, then accepted a bid 12.5 mil for him. don't quote me on this but i think it was one of the transfers that taggarts son was investigated in, something wasn't right with it

Would say Alves, tho maybe swayed quite a bit my seeing him on the spanish footy on sky quite a lot.

Sure there must be others going back further but then 20-30 years ago it didn't matter as much given how successful we were.

What I don't get is apparantly Rick Parry is a Liverpool fan?

He's got a funny way of showing it:

Made sure he kept his job but plunged Liverpool into £350 million worth of Debt by setting up a deal with the yanks

Misses out on key players Alves, Simao and theres probably more.

Wouldn't give Rafa £1 million more to buy Barry.

Bought Robbie Keane against Rafa's wish. (this may be true may not?)

NEARLY sold Gerrard to Chelsea.

Is stalling on Deals for Agger probably fucking them up.

Seems to be playing one yank against the other and is clearly loving it.

The only good thing he has done of late is he was a key figure in bringing Rafa to Liverpool...

If Rick Parry was a true red he would have realized he was a complete incompitant fuck up and would have resigned years ago.....

Aurelio

Mascherano
Riera

Torres
Keane

Not too shabby.... Anyone can make a list of players they might have missed out on. For what its worth I dont think Simao would have been much better than Garcia, Essien isnt as good as Gerrard, Vidic is no better than Agger, just older. Alves would maybe have been good, maybe would have got kicked right into touch considering that Torres, who is much stronger physically, still gets no protection from refs. And Ronaldo wasnt signed simply because United paid 3 times more than anyone else was willing to.

End of the day, Rafas done a pretty good job in signing players.

And I dislike Parry as much as the next person, but giving Rafa the '£1 million more for Barry' (which I think is total bollocks anyway) then we probably would have sold Xabi.

Far too close.
