Nidge lists Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica and Sacred Reich amoung his favourite bands...

It's quite difficult to find something I consider "too" rock.

I'm sure they're shitting themselves. They must be deperate to impress someone as influential as you, bellinter. ;)

Clearly I meant that this was the start of their biggest shows to date..... the NME tour

Must say they were excellent. Have been turned off them because of all this hype surrounding them but I have to say they gave a great performance from the very start. They were only on for about 35 minutes or so but nearly managed to play everything off the album. Fake Tales of San Francisco was the standout of the night, great great song.

Not long, is it? Were all four bands on for the same length of time, or did Maximo Park get longer? What order were they on in?

Just found this on NME...

ShockWaves NME Awards Tour 2006 is go!
Arctic Monkeys and Maximo Park lead the way in Dublin
Maximo Park, Arctic Monkeys, We Are Scientists and Mystery Jets have opened the ShockWaves NME Awards Tour in Dublin.

With first day sales of their debut album estimated at over 60,000, Monkeys fever gripped the city as the hottest new bands tour of the year rolled into town and 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not' hit shelves across the UK.

Just as Oasis marked the release of 'Definitely Maybe' over ten years earlier with a show at Dublin's Tivoli Theatre, the Monkeys too were in the Irish capital for a sold-out first night of the Shockwaves NME Awards Tour as their debut long player verges on eclipsing the Mancunians to become the fastest selling rock debut of all time.

During a set dominated by the aforementioned LP, frontman Alex Turner quipped, "So it's a fuckin' phenomenon then 'ey? This time last year I was in my bedroom", before beginning a riotous set which included Number One singles 'When The Sun Goes Down' and 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor', along with 'Still Take You Home', 'Dancing Shoes', 'Fake Tales Of San Francisco', 'A Certain Romance' and new song 'Leave Before The Lights Come On'.

Turner seemed perplexed by the myriad of items flung on stage during their set - calling one bra flinging woman "stupid" and commenting "Is Morrissey here or summat" as a tricolour flag wrapped around his microphone.

Headliners Maximo Park also enjoyed huge levels of devotion with belts, trousers and shirts getting in the way of singer Paul Smith's scissor kicks. "Somebody's going to be naked soon if all these clothes are coming from the same person," he laughed.

With only Arctic Monkeys having previously visited the city, it was debuts all round in Dublin. First up were Mystery Jets, with frontman Blaine Harrison quick to point out that Arctic Monkeys weren't the only band with a loyal following, dedicating 'Purple Prose' to the small Irish army of fans that greeted the band on their arrival to the airport.

We Are Scientists too were "amazed" by the Irish crowd with 'Nobody Moves, Nobody Gets Hurt' and 'The Great Escape' receiving the loudest cheers of the night and bringing on the evenings first crowd surfers.

The tour continues tonight with a second sold-out show in Dublin.

No Mardy Bum. Wasnt too familiar with the song so didnt even notice it missing, but hear its a cracker so will have a better listen.

Yeah I was very disappointed that they didnt play for longer. Its always easier to impress during a short set as you dont have to play any filler. Maximo got about 45 minutes, but didnt wait for the end as dont rate them at all.

Order was:

Mystery Jets
We Are Scientists
Arctic Monkeys
Maximo park

same again tonight

Loving Mystery Jets too, a couple of cracking singles.

Don't know how you don't have 'Still take you home' in there, but personal choice i suppose! Just got the album yesterday, its much better than i thought it would be.  Along with STYH, my favourite tracks would have to be 'When the Sun goes down' and 'Red lights indicate doors are secured'.  They are playing the ulster hall in belfast tonight i think, it sold out mega quick though :(

They played Mardy Bum on the second night in Dublin. Amazing band, they blew the whole place away. Never seen anything quite like it in terms of the crowd reaction. They opened with When The Sun Goes Down and Dancefloor, the place went mental

We Are Scientists were very good too, not that impressed by Maximo Park or Mystery Jets

The first album from indie band Arctic Monkeys has become the fastest-selling debut album in UK chart history.

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not was released on 23 January and has sold more than 360,000 copies.

The Sheffield band's album is currently outselling the rest of the top 20 album chart combined.

A spokesman for music retailer HMV said: "In terms of sheer impact... we haven't seen anything quite like this since The Beatles."

Internet

He added: "In the space of just a few weeks the Arctic Monkeys have gone from being relative newcomers to becoming a household name."

Arctic Monkeys built up their fan base on the internet, after demo CDs they handed out at gigs in 2003 were put on the web for other people to hear.

They were eventually signed by independent record label Domino Records.

Arctic Monkeys have already had two number one singles in the UK with I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor and last week with When The Sun Goes Down.

Pulp singer Jarvis Cocker, who is also from Sheffield, told the BBC the Arctic Monkeys' success was a lesson for the music industry.

"I think it's very important because they've done it without trying," he said.

"The only reason people have got into it [the music] is because they've listened to it and they like it, so it's something real.

"I guess all the music industry will probably think 'how can we emulate that or what can we do?'

"I think there's nothing they can do about it because it's something that has happened naturally, there's no way to apply spin doctorism to it."

Arctic Monkeys easily beat Richard Ashcroft's latest album Keys To The World which sold 75,000 copies - a total that would have normally guaranteed the top spot.

But they were denied simultaneous number ones in both the singles and album charts after When The Sun Goes Down was knocked off the number one spot by Notorious BIG, Diddy and Nelly with Nasty Girl.

Other singles in the top ten include X-Factor winner Shayne Ward, The JCB song by folk-pop duo Nizlopi, and 1980s band A-Ha with their new entry Analogue (All I Want).

Says it all. For all that people go on about the Arctic Monkeys being nothing more than Radio 1 and NME's flavour of the month, they have, quite simply, become a musical phenomenon in a matter of a few months.

Domino must be rubbing their hands.

I can't wait until Thursday... what a way to spend my birthday. I can't believe they aren't headlining these gigs.

Exactly what i've been saying. The album seems, to people who have been following the AM's from the start at least, a little over-produced, and dare i say it, some of the songs have lost their edge. Still great though.

Definatley 'Fake Tales of San Francisco' has lost its edge, it used to jump at you with the bass line and drums, now it sounds a bit more muted.

IMO they couldve had this sound like Oasis 'Definatley Maybe' but they've let too much of the raw talent go amiss with the production. Maybe it would've been a better album if they didnt have all this hype and internet play- and just went straight from the road to the studio for the first album.

Then again, its still a good album, but couldve been a lot better IMO
