Anyone had a seat leon and what's your opinion of them?
I drove one around Spain for a month last May. It impressed me so much that when I got back I bought one (Diesel estate model). My wife had an Audi A3 Cabriolet on order and I had my eye on a year old A3, but the Leon won me over.
Now, you probably know that SEAT and Audi are both VW owned, but don't expect them to be the same. The Leon feels much less well built. The interior is plasticky and basic compared to the amazing Audi interior. At 60-70mph the Audi is pin-drop quiet and refined, while the Leon is rather, er, agricultural in comparison. The 5-speed box feels like it would've benefited from a 6th gear for motorway journeys. The ride isn't as comfortable as the A3 despite running on 16" wheels (our A3 is running on 18" wheels). The touch screen is also infuriating compared to the A3's MMI - I really don't understand why touchscreens are in cars, it's incredibly distracting. And I'd have loved the cruise control to be on a separate stalk, rather than clumped onto the indicator stalk (but that's nit-picking).
But everything is negated by the price. I'm comparing it to a brand new £30k car, above. The Leon is an exceptional car for the money. I got a car that was less than a year old, had LED lights, nav, DAB, cruise control, parking sensors, FSH and only 10k miles on it for £9500. I could find nothing anywhere near as good at that price. The standard kit is exactly what I need and it's a nice car to drive and rather nice to look at. I love having a compact estate car - it's incredibly practical yet still fits into tight parking spaces. Ours is a 1.6tdi but is surprisingly nippy and runs on fumes! And I've saved myself about 9 grand over an equivalently aged A3 I almost bought.
If I could do it over again, I'd still have opted for the Leon because of the value it represents. If I was buying today, however, I'd have given the Ateca a look in as well - basically a jacked-up Leon that's been getting great reviews.
