4-0 is a dangerous lead for Arsenal against Newcastle remember.

Not sure why anyone is surprised, Newcastle have been pretty dire for ages.

He was utter shite to be fair. I still find it funny how there are people who think he is actually good.
He wasn’t brilliant for us but was better than Mignolet but that game is all people remember now.

I remember some other games he was shite in as well to be fair. He was hopeless against Roma in the semi final as well.

He has some qualities and maybe there was something people saw in him initially that marked him as having potential. But the fact was when he played for us, for the most part he was really, really bad.

I seem to recall in that game, Ali also let in a few goals.

I mean in a sense that a world-class manager had to play such a mediocre keeper because of budget constraints, which he entirely fixed on his own by turning Coutinho into a £150 million player.

I don’t think he was that bad for us. But he wasn’t a good GK compared to what we’ve had over the years. However I do think he was the best we had at the time.

Anyway not sure I imagined I’d be spending an evening in 2024 defending him :) people are free to remember him how they wish

Hasn’t actually done much wrong tonight. Made some decent saves. Not his fault there’s a complete shitshow in front of him

Karius made some decent saves but was too rooted on his line at times. He probably should have been dominating the box a bit more. However he hasn’t played for a while and so it would be harsh to say that his performance was anything but decent. His defenders let him down a lot.

Except we got there in spite of him - remember Roma? We would have been better off with Mignolet in goal, but people convinced themselves he 'didn't look like a top keeper'. In any case, Alisson was a massive upgrade on both and we don't have to think about it anymore.

Although as I said before Ali also let in a lot of goals in that game. It was that sort of game, we kind of got a bit complacent.

I remember Brad Jones.

Karius might not have been great but at least he tried to get in the way. Jones had a habit of diving the wrong way, and into a different postcode, when the ball was struck in his general direction.

(Although still on the winning side against Everton at Wembley! Ha!)

Mignolet was dogshit. The only keeper I've seen make a point of making himself smaller on a one-on one.

I do remember Roma. Their keeper looked worse. Of course I'm glad we upgraded but picking the Roma tie just proves how strange/stupid it is to pick a particular game or tie to judge a keeper.

Both are awful keepers but I think Jones shades it for me. Didn't Jones go on and win the Dutch league with Feyenoord after leaving us? Meanwhile Karius couldn't even get into Union Berlin's side and failed at Beşiktaş after leaving us

I also really don't see the issue with expressing views on a forum. We are not directly abusing the player, and it's 100% clear that Karius is not an EPL-level keeper; he should not have been playing for us. It was all down to budget constraints.

I don't see the need to lie to ourselves and turn every player into some cult hero who defied expectations when he was painfully average.

You also should accept those views to be challenged when they are clearly hyperbolic.
