Can never understand why these mega earners go to such lengths to avoid paying tax on their mega earnings - they're already earning such ridiculous money that cutting in half still leaves it at mega-money - hell, if it makes them feel better, make a bloody meal of it and point out to all and sundry that they can shut it about the money since they're contributing significantly via the massive amount of tax they pay.

Stupid and greedy I suppose.

You know that thing about how power corrupts? Well money makes people greedy. Not always or absolutely, just like not all those with power are corrupted by it, but it pushes you in certain directions.

Didn’t this guy get an MBE for his support of the NHS during covid? Now he’s tax dodging. his Saudi move really shows where his nhs and equality principles sit in relation to money.

I’ve never seen a Liverpool player fuck themselves so badly, so quickly.

Can't wait for his presser and see him talking about why he's taken up this exciting new project.

I know ultimately he would probably have the final say but it’s fair to say all these super rich, not the sharpest footballers will have financial advisers telling them what to do.

Most of those financial.advisors likely see it as their job to make their client as much money as possible, ie, pay as little tax as possible. They don't care (or understand) that it looks like tax dodging to everybody else.

I'd say they all do.  The only value they add is to help their client keep more money and in exchange for that help they take a healthy proportion of the retained money.

Henderson is an idiot but I doubt there's a single top-flight player that doesn't have some sort of tax minimisation in place.  Lots of money that should be paying for public services being diverted to financial advisors and giving the mega rich a bit more to spend in Dubai.

Can anyone remember the last player playing in Dutch football that was capped for England?  It's a step up from the Saudi league for sure but the general standard doesn't seem that high.  Maybe Chuba Akpom will get his long awaited England call-up now that he's a teammate of Henderson.

We all pay the minimum tax possible really, don't we? Even if you're on the payroll, you don't pay more than PAYE. You also avoid tax by paying into pensions etc. When I ran my own company, I paid the minimum possible tax. If the tax rate was higher or there were different rules, I'd have happily paid more.

I'm a socialist, but I think it's down to the government to have a rigorous and fair tax system rather than the individual to "pay their fair share" when it's not a voluntary donation. Capital gains tax needs to be overhauled for example.

In just a few months, Jordan Henderson has made the desert bloom. Homosexuality is celebrated in a new annual "Festival of Love" in Riyadh; Bin Salman has declared universal rights for all creeds, colours and sexual orientations; Saudi Arabia has moved to 100% renewables, brought in low-impact agricultural specialists to create a new garden paradise, and banned all arms deals. The country has issued a full apology for all of its historic human rights abuses and paid huge reparations to the victims and their families. It's quite incredible what one footballer can do, if he is prepared to stand up for what he believes in.

Next stop, benighted Amsterdam. Jordan's crusade is a moral one. Who can withstand him?

In 1980, a Sunday Times investigation revealed that in 1978, the Dewhurst chain paid £10 tax on a profit of more than £2.3m. By this time, Edmund's grandson, also Edmund, and his cousin, Lord Samuel, were at the helm.

I think you'll find the rich find ways to pay less than ordinary working people, that cannot be right. I agree, it's the rules, but people should be aware of the fact it is happening. Didn't Jordan (and agent) get a big signing fee to go change the culture in Saudi?

So even if he doesn't get his wage money from them - I bet he didn't play for free.

So, based on press reports that he deferred his salary and then abandoned it to get out of his contract, he’s about 100k per week worse off than had he stayed at Liverpool. And that’s before the reputation damage that will affect his future earnings.

He should’ve stayed and bowed out at the end of this season, headed to the euros and then gone for a cushy MLS retirement.

If I was £100k worse off I'd be dead, Jordan won't be, he'll be fine. Must be great having choices as to which millionaire path to follow. For other sports people (except for the top in some sports like Golf, tennis, F1 etc) these sorts of choices make a difference to the rest of their lives. For PL players it's just about how many houses they can cope with.

That's what does my head in with these types of things. Many people have to sacrifice their principles to get by in life, people who can afford to keep their principles (and still be wealthy) are far worse.

Gold.

Deferred his blood money so he wouldn't pay tax back home.
Hasn't been paid.
Dragged his whole family to one of the most oppressive countries in the world.
Captains a team that hasn't won in their last 8 matches.
Plays in front of less than 1000 fans.
Takes a 60% pay cut to abandon his 'project'.
He deferred it only to  end up forfeiting a good chunk anyway🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Imagine selling your soul to go to Saudi Arabia for the money, only to end up with less money in the bank. And with more money left on the table with the contract he already had at Liverpool.

Agree with this. He was a much better player for us than many give him credit for but he's moved on and so must we. Countinho's departure was initially lamented but we ended up in a much better place due to smart recruitment. The same has happened with Jordan. I think Klopp would have liked him to stay for his influence on the younger players in particular but, again, we have recruited our midfield replacements well and anyone in the media who thought we'd take Henderson back is living in cloud-cuckoo land.

I don't like where he went but there is no doubt that he regrets the decision and anyone who says they have never made a mistake in life is not being honest. The fact that he and some others are desperate to leave the Saudi League after such a short time is not a good look for that League and that's good news for the other leagues in Europe. The Saudis, by virtue of their wealth, appeared to be in a position to hoover up the best talent in the world but any player who might have been considering it might now be having second thoughts and that in spite of the money, the lower standard of football, the relatively empty stadia, the climate and the negative personal publicity means that it's just not an attractive proposition.

Agree about the first part. Henderson was brilliant for us and a big part of our success under Klopp. He clearly went downhill but this time last year, I was expecting him to be here this season and like you, I wouldn't have had a problem with that if his game time was reduced. He wanted to leave once this offer came in and we've moved on now which is working out well for us so far.

I don't like any of our players moving to Saudi but it's much worse with Henderson given his previous comments and then made worse by his interviews since he moved there and then made even worse by him wanting out given those comments. It's a massive shame as if he hadn't moved there, he'd have so much respect given what he did here. Still appreciate his time here but it's been soured massively.
We have to change from doubter to believer. Now.

He might want to avoid taxes, but reading all the gargabe that has been written about him and the reception he got playing for England, maybe, just maybe, he doesn't want to play weekly in the Prem with all this toxicity around his person.

All in all it has been a great example of why not to always follow the money. I hope players like Trent, Robertson and Mo won't make the same stupid decisions Hendo did. Hendo has been a great captain for this club, I admired him as a player and as a person untill it all went to shit in a matter of weeks. Such a bloody shame.

Aye. The way he dug in with those interviews trying to justify everything has only made his fall from grace all the harder. I don't think "amused" is the right word, as it suggests bitterness. I think "karma" is more apt. You reap what you sow.

Like I said, he's made a complete tit of himself and he knows it. He daren't show himself at any ground in the English game now. He burned all his bridges on his way out the door and it'll take him years to rebuild any kind of reputation, and restore some kind of bond with the fans, assuming he's even arsed.

Hi everyone, hope you’re doing well. I normally post transfer videos related to Liverpool on here, but couldn’t help but comment on the Jordan Henderson situation. While many are painting him as the anti-christ, I think the situation is a little bit more nuanced than that. Do let me know what you think as well as what you’ve made of what’s happened in the last 6 or so months, cheers!

Is it wrong of me? I actually found that very moving.
Really Yorky? Aside from the Cruijff gag, I found it quite amateur and a bit cringeworthy if I'm honest.

I thought Ajax were smarter than this. It's not like they're welcoming home a favourite son like Daley Blind. They really have lost their way this year but I guess the PR value of the signing is worth something to them. Said it before, I think it's a port in a storm and can't see him staying there very long before he starts looking at the MLS.

No, I was talking about Hendo's tweeted farewell to El Attifax.

The welcome from Ajax broke me completely.

No, I was talking about Hendo's tweeted farewell to El Attifax.
So I wasn't the only one who read...

"I'm sad to say that I will be leaving Al Ettifaq with immediate effect. It wasn’t an easy decision but one that I feel is best for me and my family. I want to take this opportunity to thank the club & the fans for all the support during my time. I really felt the love from Day One.
I’ll keep watching & hoping for your success. Good luck for the future."

as...

"I'm fucking relieved to say that I'll be leaving this gold-plated shithole and bottom-feeding club with immediate effect thank god. It wasn't an easy decision given the millions in unpaid salary and the massive tax exemptions I've had to forgo, but one that I feel is best for my ego, getting Gaz to select me for England at the next Euros oh and yeah, not getting grief from the wife as she's fuckin' miserable out here. I want to take this opportunity to thank Stevie G and  every single one of the 637 fans of the club for all their support during my brief time here. I really felt the regret from Day One. I’ll never give you a second thought except in my nightmares. See you in Riyadh in 2034. If you pay me enough, like."

It'd be funny if Gareth Southgate doesn't pick him for the Euros now. More chance of Gareth giving up wearing waistcoats, but it'd be a laugh if he dropped him

Bizarre signing for Ajax.
