2022 is over and we roll in to 2023.

First big release is Iggy Pop that is out on Friday.
No, jazz. You fear jazz. You fear the lack of rules, the lack of boundaries. Oh look, it's a fence. But, no, it's soft.

Two albums were released on New Year’s Day (that I know of).

“Higher Lonely Power” by Fireworks, which is their first album in the best part of a decade. 43 minutes long.

“Ambient23” by Moby, which is his latest instalment of ambient compositions without vocals. 146 minutes long.

Looking forward to the upcoming release (13th Jan) of the second Billy Nomates record, Cacti. I didn't get the first album until much later on, but the tracks released in advance of this follow-up point towards this being a really good record.

A couple of those tracks:

Great shout Jackh, didn't know the album was out so soon. Seen Billy nomates at Glasto last year, a really top performance and I'm loving the more polished sound.

Not particularly familiar with Stereogum, so can't really vouch for it, but they've posted a list of albums they're expecting/hoping for in 2023.

New Pagans, Ride, PJ Harvey, Michael Stipe, The National, and boygenius jumping out at me. What's everyone else looking forward to, or at least hoping for?

Stereogum has an excellent running column on the Billboard number ones. Well worth reading through it as it basically charts the history of popular music over the past 50 years. There's a great comment section after each article as well.

As for 2023 albums, I'm hoping for a new Strokes album as I thought their last one was a nice return for them. Also hoping for new albums by Vampire Weekend, Marika Hackman and Danny Brown. Will be interested to see what reissues Taylor Swift puts out this year (could well be all her remaining albums).

Great shout on Marika Hackman, Zee - I still haven't listed to her debut album or the covers record, but really enjoyed the last two 'proper' releases and it's approaching three & a half years since 'Any Human Friend' was released.

Michael Stipe should be interesting as should Everything But The Girl (nothing but a good Tracey Thorn album since 1999)

Also John Bramwell is at least 3 years overdue with his (he was playing tracks live in 2018) so should be better than it was, Gemma Hayes may be worth a listen if it ever appears after her new found club fame and the first track from the Colorist Orchestra/Emeliana Torrini sounds promising. I await surprises though and some artists are overdue also (Black Pumas, Lisa Hannigan)

I am quite looking forward to the new Mac DeMarco album, which is due out on the 20th of this month. I found his last release in 2019 to be quite underwhelming, but given that this upcoming album will be purely instrumental, it is an interesting enough change in direction for me to give it a whirl when it drops.

Would love The XX to knock out another album. Nothing now for 6 years.

Same. Solid Scouse band to kick off the year with. Will be pleased if it comes anywhere close to 2016's Different Creatures.

Quite different from Margo Price her new one Strays. Most of the album has shaken off trad country and there's quite a mix here of psych, new wave, blues etc. That opener is the most interesting, cool JJ Cale kind of rhythm guitar sending it all the way

Second Ghost Woman LP out now in as many years. More barmy than the first one, but still wonderful psych on it

A month in and nothing's really grabbed me this year yet. I've listened to albums by Maneskin, Ava Max, Circa Waves, Gabrielle Aplin, Emarosa and Elle King. All of them ranging from "fine" to "pretty poor".

Still waiting for that first album to proper pull me in.

Not sure if this is the right place but for those who have not heard of a young artist called Ren then listen to the two videos below. The guy is an absolute genius and his style and music are astounding. He’s over in Canada at the moment getting treatment for a long-term illness so probably won’t do a lot this year.

Note that these videos are live and one-take. His story telling is brilliant. Enjoy.

Like the new Paramore album more than I anticipated. Really didn't like This Is Why or C'est Comme Ca (and still don't) but the majority of the album tracks are really enjoyable. The final 5 tracks on the record are a string of consecutive winners.

Brit Awards last night. Didn't know most of the acts or nominations to be fair. Harry Styles & Wetleg were the major winners. Did not mind that wetleg tune.
