I'm not sure if nationalising the energy companies is necessary or good value for money but I would like to see a state owned energy company setup that can compete.

I'm travelling to the UK soon and have a choice of buying a ticket in advance - but potentially be out of pocket if I am delayed getting to the UK (and no chance of refund). Or, buy the train ticket at the station when I reach the UK and pay a lot more. The way you are confined to a specific train with your ticket (in the UK) is fucking ridiculous.

Try TrainPal, Jiminy.

There are quite a few ‘ticket splitting’ apps online, but TrainPal from my experience is the best.

They’ve all come out of the woodwork, not just McCluskey. This morning’s Guardian carries articles from Fletcher, Owen Jones, McDonnell and Ken Loach - every one of them castigating Starmer for expulsion of ‘long time activists’, creating division and ditching democracy.

No mention in any of them of the deselection games of a few years ago.

It’s my opinion that Starmer has recognised that this boil needs lancing once and for all. He might be wrong, but only time will tell.

Ken Loach wants to form a new political party:

A new party would face the same difficulties as in the past. But we need a new initiative – a broad, inclusive, independent labour movement that unites those both in and outside the Labour party. It should be led by people who are recognised, principled and trusted, and the support of left unions would be critical.

We have a wealth of talent: young activists, rising politicians, academics, medics and economists, as well as great leaders in the communities and grassroots organisations. They understand all too well what is happening and speak with clarity and passion.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/sep/28/democracy-keir-starmer-labour-left-ken-loach

I hope to God he does it. I know he's helped to form new left-wing parties in the past and that all of them have come a-cropper. But hopefully that won't deter him from one last big effort. Just leave the Labour party alone Ken. You don't like it, and it doesn't like you.

There are hundreds of valid criticisms that can be hurled at privatised railways in the UK. But one of the biggest is the simple fact that they DON'T WANT YOUR CUSTOM. They specialise in deterring people from using their trains, preferring to make profits by charging a small class of British travellers enormous prices. It is the opposite of "mass transit".

I think he's doing really well in this speech

Getting heckled, but dealing with it well.

Looking at the future, apologising for what was wrong. Thanking those around the party.

I'm quite impressed. Pushing the idea that it's about actually doing something sensible that will actually help people

Station and train access can be really poor, yeah. Question for Labour is really how much they're going for a regional/local approach in some ways. With the metro mayors there's already moves there to integrate transport, and part of that remit can be trains/stations in their areas, so is it possible to do that and then join them together? Not sure.

Labour: The Party of Working people.

Still getting heckled.

Seems like a fairly humble bloke. Talking about his parents. His dad who was a toolmaker and his mum who was a nurse.

This lad wasn't born with a silver spoon on his mouth like the majority of politicians thesedays.

I like that he's put the slant on WORKING people as a bugbear that people have (wrongly or rightly) is that Labour support 'feckless layabouts'

If you know when you're going, buying a ticket in advance isn't all that expensive. Even a day in advance is fairly cheap. Buy it online, pick it up when you get to the station.
If am delayed and I miss my train, the UK rail ticket is non-refundable. I could buy a ticket for much later than I need (in anticipation of possible delays), but I do not wish to hang around unnecessarily at a UK rail station. Besides, I could find no cheap alternative (split ticket) for my journey.

Wasn't that how our railway network was done in the first place?

With the regional lines? Yeah, kind of. There's a lovely old mosaic map of the NW system at Manchester Victoria. With the metro mayors though it'll also be buses (and trams where they exist). But I'd have to read up on where the policy proposals are at cos it's all GM focused for me at the moment with what Burnham's doing. And the downside to current system is that, privately, GM is quite happy to throw Yorkshire under a bus for things like the link to HS2 so long as GM gets its money. So there is obviously need for national overview beyond just the long distance travel.

I'll give that one a go. Thanks.
No good. I can save a few quid on the specific train I would Ideally catch if everything goes right. The following train is the same price I get from the national rail website. Just not worth spending nearly 74 quid for single ticket (which i might lose), when I can just buy a ticket at the time for 97. Thanks anyway.

Good line:

"It’s easy to comfort yourself that your opponents are bad people. But I don’t think Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson is a bad man. I think he is a trivial man. I think he’s a showman with nothing left to show. I think he’s a trickster who has performed his one trick."

The usual sources are absolutely fuming.

Not even coherently.

They are just angry at everything.

They both went in high, that's factually correct, both tried to play the ball at height.  Doku with his foot, Mac Allister with his chest.

@paulwaugh
The heckling is now beyond parody. One activist just yelled 'free Julian Assange!'

Oh dear.....
I'm only surprised that they did not yell, Julian Assange Matters. Oh well. Maybe they'll fuck off soon. Fromm what I can gather, maybe this is exactly what Starmer is attempting to encourage.

Isn't there scope for small organisational changes at a local level?

I don't know, sorry. The current picture is/is going to be one of a patchwork of bodies similar to Transport for London but with the government reluctant to release money which they won't have any oversight over (which has some fair points to it given oversight of mayors has been patchy). But beyond that I'm clueless and would have to ask and read.

it takes a special someone to heckle a politician while they're reminiscing about their mother in hospital intensive care

Disgusting.
A Tory, a worker and an immigrant are sat round a table. There's a plate of 10 biscuits in the middle. The Tory takes 9 then turns to the worker and says "that immigrant is trying to steal your biscuit"
