Eh, 4 center backs is usually enough. The odds of this situation happening again seems remote but I suppose we could have 5 since Matip and Gomez are made of string cheese.

We don’t know how long it’ll be for Virgil and Gomez to get back up to speed after serious injuries.  Realistically we need to go into the season with 5. So be it Phillips staying as the 5th choice (taking it that they do sign Konate), or they sign 2 central defenders in Konate and maybe Kabak or whoever.

Him and Rhys are giving it everything and playing well individually. It's obviously not an ideal partnership, particularly up against United's front line and they've barely played together.

After he lost all his composure clearing the ball and let Cavani nick it off him in the penalty area? He's done well to clear it off the line but if he clears it directly before that he doesn't need to.

Nat may not be the best defender, and I agree that beyond being a 5th choice next season, his future is likely not here.

but to come into this thread just to go on about him being terrible, after the game we’ve just witnessed tonight, is plain odd.

Enjoy the wildness of this situation, we smashed the Mancs with our 5th and 6th choice central defenders (or even 6th and 7th choice if you factor Fab would likely have played there if our midfield wasn’t so depleted).

Bailly and Lindeloff cost £60m between them and they conceded four goals and I’m not sure either were better than Phillips.

I think Phillips is limited but some of the criticisms are harsh for a player who is 5th choice.
