Got some players who really could have played at higher levels like Kevin Phillips. Was top scorer a few times in the league when at sunderland wasn't he?

Only once in the Premier League I think, he was proloificbthey season they got promoted too.

North Bank - Overmars was class, doubt he’s underrated although he doesn’t get spoken about as much as Henry, Bergkamp and Pires.

Have you such a direct, cutting edge though.

This won't be popular but Ander Herrera.

I agree with that one. Definitely happy he left the Mancs and didn’t realise his potential for the Mancs. I imagine under a manager like Rafa at a top club he’d have become a top player by now.

I was trying to think of players from when I was a lad in the 70s. Was trying to pick out some Forest players who may be underrated but couldnt really pick any out. Maybe that was the genius of Clough the manager. It was all about the team. I guess I always used to be very aware of John Robertson whenever we played them. It used to seem like wars against them in them days. I dont mean violent, just a hard battle for a few years.

Ipswich Town also had some great players that not many people talk about these days. Frans Thijssen, Muhren before he became a Manc. Eric Gates etc.

Roy Makaay - Great all round striker with pace, good in the air and a good shot. Left foot, right foot, headers, penalties.

Great player. One of those players, who didn't just have a peak of 4 or 5 great seasons, but put up very good numbers throughout his career

Giovanni Elber

He was unlucky he played in a time during Ronaldo,Rivaldo, and others and didn't get a chance to prove himself for Brazil, but he was sensational for Bayern and Stuttgart.

One of my favorite goal-scorers

Three from Leicester 1970's, maybe they're legends in Leicester, but didn't get the international recognition they deserved. Keith Weller (4 caps), David Nish (5 caps) & Frank Worthington - who nearly signed for us, but failed his medical (8 caps).

Frank scored one of the best goals I've ever seen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0z_arXZ8nM

Yes!! Roy Makaay was absolute class. I first started watching him when I was a teenager. I loved Eurogoals on Eurosport. He banged them in for fun at Vitesse Arnheim.

I’ll also add 2 PSG players to this list ... Patrice Loko and Rai ... they were class, Rai in particular!

Love him or hate him - David Beckham is underrated IMO. I think his celebrity profile gets more plaudits then his playing career.

Not sure about Beckham - I always think his superstar celeb status overrated his ability.

Is it true to say he’d struggle in today’s game when we expect more from wingers?

Robert Prosinečki - Midfield maestro. Had the ball on a string. Loved a drink and a smoke and injuries got the better of him, but on his day he was up there with the best.
He was simply sensational.

I’m going to say Ivan Zamorano.

He played for Inter in a preseason friendly at Anfield.  He was sensational.

Alessio Tacchinardi -  now he was a proper player for Juventus in the late 90s / early noughties. Absolute rock, excellent passing range, smart, aggressive tackle, monster long range shot. We could have done with a guy like him back in the day. Never hear a peep about this guy now, but he would be first midfield pick for virtually every team in today’s Premier League.

I think lack of games for his country makes him slip under the radar a bit.

Not sure Rosicky was particularly under rated, he just barely played
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

Lucio comes to mind. Pretty much a lesser version of Van Dijk.

He has to be the most underrated CB in modern times. He was an absolute rock the season Inter won the CL. Spearheaded Brazil's backline in the 2002 World Cup too.

Surprised Real Madrid were never in for him during his prime.

Yeah, Gudjohnsen was very good.

Always felt Owen Hargreaves got a rough ride in the press, he always looked decent whenever I saw him, very composed and intelligent on the ball. Could've been used more for England in a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1 to provide a bit of balance in the midfield alongside Gerrard and Lampard.

Some La Liga players from the early 2000's that don't seem to get spoken about anymore, probably because they didn't play for Real or Barca. Diego Tristan was great for Deportivo when they were a real threat in the Champions League, plus players from Benitez's Valencia side like Aimar, Ayala, Albelda and Vicente.

Jaoquin was class in his first Real Betis stint as well. Think he suffered from injuries and a change in the times with wingers now expected to contribute more goals.

Too many of these guys weren't underated at the time in my opinion.

If you are talking about now, with the rise of Insta, you'd be right. But also, if we were using social media as a determinant factor Pogba would be the GOAT.

Shouts like R9 are laughable. He is considered the closest thing to a Messi/he who fannies about and dives around 'lovechild' and in his prime it was only horrible injuries that stopped him from properly being in the GOAT arguements

Yeah his relaxed style drove some people mental, but I loved the way he would pull off ridiculous things as though he was only doing it because he had nothing better to do at the time. That chip he scored for Monaco is pure Berbatov, he had the ball in the box for a second or two, then seemed to stop and think "what am I doing, I can just put the ball in the net here" and chips the keeper like it was the easiest thing he'd do all day.

Also, something tells me Laudrup is not considered as good as he really was by most of the people.

In Denmark and in Spain, Laudrup is seen as one of the greatest footballers who ever lived (and rightly so), but in the UK he's definitely underrated. Because La Liga wasn't shown much outside Spain in the 90s, fans worldwide simply didn't seem him much at his best. When people in England talk of Cruyff's Barcelona 'dream team', they always mention Romario and Stoichkov and not Laudrup, but he was probably the best player on the team and probably the best player in Europe in the first half of the 90s. Like Iniesta but quicker, an even better passer and more goals.
