How did that work? Is it FM draft mode or something?

They got together 12 different managers of 12 different nationalities and they had to draft their teams from a pool. Then they basically played a champions league with the squads - prize for the winner.

Network games are just a nightmare to do aren't they.

Managed to edit the config file for the fm 2017 versus mode to expand the league to more than 6 players. Cuts out all the other football manager fluff but naturally doesn't have transfers etc.

Might give this a try, what are the early opinions? Was mad into it between 12-15 but given the last two a miss. That bit when you take over a club and I literally seem to spend about 3 solid hours before I've even played a game just getting everything sorted.

I spent a few hours on it yesterday when I finally got it, I managed to do everything but play a game. Oh, and sign a player. Why is it so difficult this year? I didn't get last year's but it seems miles better than FM16 by a long shot.

I used to be part of a Network game on about FM06, it was slow running (cos the game wasn't set up to do it properly really), but it was goood as we had about half the Russian league filled up.

Set a time twice a week to play, and just play with whoever shows up, if you miss a round then it's tough really. Best way to do it. It can be fun, would be interesting seeing if it could work on the newer games.
We already have shit in the country, and the game of Liverpool fills life with joy. Thanks

Can you use a custom database for network ganes? If you can you could use an obscure nation to replace the existing league with a rawk one. I tried a network game with friends once but it took too long playing all 38 prem games

Yeah so there's a couple of options if we were serious about getting one started either:

Using the fantasy draft already built into the game: https://www.dreamteamfc.com/c/gaming/348093/football-manager-2018-fantasy-draft/

Or

Someone takes the responsibility of editing the database with the data editor and setting up a custom league with custom teams then everyone downloads that data file (would take much, much longer).

Anyone else?

I don't have 18 yet :D

Would actually consider it if people wanted to commit to this though.

Best idea would be to either do a small league that is kind of balanced, or a draft as said.

You'd be best using gibraltar as the base nation. Has 1 team in the champs league qualifiers and 2 in europa i think. Depends then how you want your teams, league settings etc but it's not that hard to create

Sound. Think the first thing to probably do is keep track of who's interested, once we know how many we can probably come up with the easiest way of doing it so potentially:

Zend
Will G
Elzar

Will keep adding to this as we go, anyone fancy it?

How can a player get a work permit on one game but not on another? I signed Predrag Rajkovic on a Liverpool save but accidentally exited without saving. I then went to sign him again after I started a new save but the appeal got rejected.

7 injuries to first team players (despite rotation!) in December, this game is brutal. Firmino, Coutinho, Sturridge, Can, Wijnaldum, Lallana, and Salah :'( Can is out for 4 months, the news item said he would miss the second leg of my CL knockout first round. That's miles away!

Grujic is outperforming Gini as a supporting APM . Offered him a new contract (thankfully to kick in at the end of the season)... and Serbia don't have a high enough ranking for him to get a Work Permit! One problem after another. Is it possible that if the contract had been for instant activation, I'd have been blocked from playing him?

I don't know if its because I haven't played it for ages and missed a year but there's just so much going on. I understand its meant to be realistic but I cant quite grasp it. Anyone having this problem? This is from someone who apart from FM17 put a good 800 hours into each one before it.

Yep they have added needless shit imo, probably in an attempt to look like they have improved loads upon the previous version.

Actually enjoying the game now.

Bought VVD straight away, finished 5th but won the League Cup and CL.

Then Naby came in, signed Dybala too + Guerreiro at LB in January. Currently still in the FA and CL. 7 points clear at the top.

Dybala really has taken me to the next level - scores so many.

Did you play Gomez/TAA much? They're both 3 stars now despite only being 6 months in to my first season.

Also I found a LB at Barca B called Cucurella who is also 5 star potential. He's got a buyout of £12m! The go-to CB everyone seems to be raving about is De Ligt at Ajax (who I also picked up).

VVD is transfer listed from the start of the game I think, they want £72m. Liverpool start with 80m. I was able to sell Lovren and Moreno but Mignolet was easier to ship out in the beta than the full release.

I've had Barca and Bayern all over Mane, Coutinho, Firmino etc. Firmino asked for a new contract, i told him to wait till the end of the season, so he moaned to the rest of the team (who then got mad at him for not informing them that I had asked him to wait). Then he asked me a week later to sell him to Bayern even though there'd been no offer! He's slippery in this one. I've got the best out of him as an Inside Forward on the left.

Was struggling a bit with Liverpool, got frustrated and looked up some tactics/formations online, found one that has suddenly put me in the title race, haven't lost in like the 15 matches I've used the new formation. But I feel like I've cheated and now I don't feel like playing anymore, and I don't want to revert back to what I was doing before since I've tasted all this success. I think I've ruined FM 18 for myself  :'(

Yeah i never use formations or signings advice from online. Its better when you get something working yourself. Try going unemployed and starting in the conference. Remember years back i took a young andy carroll on loan to mansfield when he was 17 and got them into a push for the title. Left them for leicester when they came calling though :D

Started unemployed took over malmo with 9 games remaining won the league from 4th Liverpool job came up declared interest and got sacked.  :butt

Took over Bolton saved them from relegation just, terrible finances then went on the clauses section and you can get £5mill from a rob holding clause now starting second season well after about 12 signings including kent, ojo and woodburn on loan.

After the obligatory Liverpool save I always do a journeyman save. Load up a shit load of leagues and start unemployed. Attend a few games and see what's available and then take the plunge somewhere. It's always good to start in a league where you know nothing about it. Swedish 2nd division or something like that and work up. You can always end up getting decent jobs across Europe after some initial success

Think I might have to pick this up in the new year

Started on FM18 the other night.

Took charge of my local side, Macclesfield Town and see how far I can get them. I thought i'd struggle a lot as they don't have a big squad. But watching them week in week out in the real world I feel I know a lot about each players in terms of strengths and weaknesses. What they do have going for them is no debt (but zero transfer budget and £1k a week of wage budget which I have basically spent on bringing in a scout and another couple of staff), some experienced players and fairly low expectations (top half finish, first round of FA Cup and 3rd round FA trophy). Unsurprisingly I am having to bring in loan players from bigger team’s U23 squads.

Preseason was 4 minnows which all got dealt with fairly easily and Leicester U23 which I got smashed by 5-0, though I was playing a very mixed experimental side. Media expected me to lose, but not by 5! Anyway, league started with 2 draws (both I led in) to Wrexham (A) and Hartlepool (H) and then I have gone on a run of form winning the next 5 or 6 games with the exception of a 2-1 loss (again a led in!!) to Southport. The highlight was a 4-0 victory away at Gateshead. This has propelled me to the top of the National league with Leyton Orient just behind.

Fitness is becoming an issue and we picked up a couple of injuries to key players just before I closed the game last night. I managed to beat Solihull at home (as expected) with a rotated side just before coming off the game. The problem I am facing is outside of the first 11 I don't have a lot of quality. I am allowed to sign 6 long term loans and I have used 3 on a CM, CB (as my main man is 35 and can't play each match) and a LB. I have 2 players who can play LB but one isn't great and the other I am playing LM/LW. I am going to try and nurse the squad until after Xmas before bringing in another couple of loans in the hope I am still in the shout of the title then. Slight concern is my keeper has been called up to Iraq national team and I only have 1 backup who isn’t great and likes to play sweeper keeper, which I do not! So far he has only missed the one match. But hoping he performs badly and gets dropped. It’s definitely an area which needs to be strengthened.

I am currently playing a 4-4-1-1 with a shadow striker and advanced forward, 2 wingers, 1 deep lying play maker and a CM. The defence is pretty standard. In sides I am expected to win I have a backup 4-4-2 formation. But to be honest scoring goals is not an issue with the 4-4-1-1. So I mainly play that at home too. When wanting to shut out games I have experimented with subbing the shadow striker to a DM and going 4-1-4-1 but I am thinking this just brings on more pressure.

I am also going to take charge of a Serie D side in Brazil on a different save and try and see what I can do with them. Never really done much of a Brazil save before as in Serie A you end up playing tons and tons of games with the State League, National League, Cups and Copa Lib so you need a huge squad. My plan is to pick a Serie D side outside of Rio and Sao Paulo and see if I can take them up the leagues. No idea what budgets or squads are like down there yet. But that's all part of the fun!

Yeah, I played a lot of FM17.

Hard to make a real judgement on the match engine yet to be honest mate as I have only played about 12 matches. I watch a few 'FM Youtubers' and they seem to be involved in a lot of 5-4, 4-4 type games. I have not come across that in the few games I have played though. So I guess that's their formations/instructions. A lot of people try and make some unusual formation with complex instructions. I prefer to keep it simple at first and make tweaks where required. So I guess this might be why they are letting lots in and scoring lots too. Or might just be coincidental.

So, yeah, I do recommend it. It runs nice and smooth and the new features like dynamics (like team moral), a simpler tactics screen (imo) with feedback on how players are linking for example, more details about player injuries and potential for injuries and scouting system improvements make it a more enjoyable experience than FM17 for me.

Yeh I'm giving it another go today, going to start unemployed myself and see where it takes me, maybe I need a fresh challenge to get me back into the swing of things. I started with Liverpool last time and just lost interest straight away.

Edit: Never mind, can only play England on the demo. I'll have another think before buying the actual thing then. I've never ever been able to start saves in Premier League always find it too boring maybe that's why.

Serbia being low in the rankings is why I got fucked over with a work permit for Rajkovic. To bypass the rankings issue you'd have to make him a key player and offer him bigger wages. You get certain points for meeting certain criteria.
