Not just the greatest tennis player of all time, but probably the greatest sportsperson of all time.

Yep and you think where he'd be if his main competitor wasn't also in the top 5 sportspeople of all time too.

Be interesting if Novak and Murray take time out

In the last 15 years, 2002 Hewitt vs Nalbandian 6-1, 6-3, 6-2

Hewitt is the last non-Big 4 winner here. 15 years ago...

Bollocks :D greater sports person than Ali? Jesse Owens? I'd put him in the top 10, but he's nowhere near top 5.

There should be less tennis tournaments, and Wimbledon should have a tiebreak in the fifth set, too many players getting injured. This Wimbledon was pretty much ruined by injuries. Murray Djokovic and now Cilic just could not compete. It doesn't make great viewing.

I'm fairly sure that Federer will never play the clay court season anymore, given how well he's looked this year. The only 2 matches he's lost he had match points in both.

Many average players have made it to the top 10 in the world rankings, reaching a semifinal of a grand slam doesn't count for much if that's your greatest achievement.
Did you ever watch Henman at his peak in a major tournament and think to yourself that he has a chance of winning it?
He was an average player who made it into the top 10 and won 11 titles in a thirteen year career.

He was not just an average player.  ::)

I still can't get over that the one year I had tickets to the semi finals and final, in 2010, Federer was beaten by Tomas fucking Berdych. My one chance to see him there.

And I thought he was on a downwards slide after that..
I got to see him win the 2004 final against Roddick.
Then in the midddle out pops a smiling glen johnson pulling up his jersey to reveal a t-shirt of suarez with a text saying. "OUR SUAREZ IS A FRIEND TO ALL COLOURS!"

Federer is definitely the greatest ever, there's no discussion to be had.

The only debate that remains is whether peak Novak is better than peak Federer, and I don't mind who people choose there. I don't mind somebody chucking Rafa in there too to be honest, but I feel both Novak and Fed beat Rafa at peak outside of clay.

Not entirely true. Players are obligated to play a certain numbers of events unless they meet certain criteria (years on tour, number of matches played in their career etc) or they are injured.

didn't watch it, but a while ago I didn't think Federer would be able to get another slam. I think he's won 3 since then. Fair play

Well he's won 3 since January 2010, so you have been waiting a while. Bold prediction too, because he'd won 10 and lost 8 of the last 19 finals at that stage. You probably meant 2 haha.

Think it was obvious he wasn't at his best today. Gutted for him, but he can be proud what a great grass season he's had, no shame in losing to the greatest player of all time in the final, just wish he could've pushed Roger a bit harder...

Nah. Not sure he is the greatest tennis player of all time (Nadal was better pre injuries in both their peaks... Graf, Williams and Navratilova all have a claim to being greater players). Outside his sport he's had zero cultural impact so he's behind a lot of others (Ali, Woods, Jordan)

As an all time great...behave.

Yes. Easily.

Rafa is the clay GOAT. Outside of Clay Novak is superior in every way. More Aussie slams, more Wimbledons, more US Opens. More masters. FAR longer at number 1. Five year end titles to Rafa zero. Superior slam final record against each other outside of the French. Superior head to head record overall I'm not sure what the argument otherwise is. And I sure as hell don't see why you would react as though it is ridiculous to suggest a man with 12 slams is in the conversation as being better than anyone. Seriously, it is genuinely baffling to react the way you have with any justification other than you are a Rafa fan boy. Novak Djokovic is comfortably one of the greatest players of all time and it is even more impressive that he has achieved what he has when you consider that he entered the game at a time when Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were already established as the top two players.

Rafa has won ONE non French slam since he was 25 for god sake and only five altogether. Eliminate each players best slam and Novak has won slams. Rafael Nadal is undoubtedly, without even a single debate needed, the greatest clay court player this game has or will ever see most likely. However he is not even remotely a factor in the discussion of all time Greatest ever and when it is all said and done, Novak Djokovic will have a superior record in every important aspect of the game over Rafael Nadal other than number of French Opens won.

Genuinely staggering that you dismiss Novak Djokovic in such a manner.

Rafa is the greatest clay courter ever. There. I said it again for you. However, as an all round player Novak Djokovic is quite clearly the better player. Look at every other record going and Novak is superior. And GOAT contenders in my view need to be excellent on all surfaces.

The reason he is not even in the discussion as greatest all round player is because a certain man named Roger Federer has dominated everywhere on every surface against every player other than Rafael Nadal on clay.

Take away Federer's greatest slam and he'd still have 11 slams. More than twice that of the number if you took away Nadal's greatest slam.

I'm sorry, but to have 5 slams on non clay surfaces, only one since he was 25, rules him out of the all round greatest discussion in my opinion.

My opinion is to truly be a GOAT contender you have to be good on all surfaces. Rafa Nadal hasn't got to even a QF on Wimbledon's grass since he was 25.

He hasn't dominated a single slam over a long period of time other than the French. It hasn't even been like he dominates everyone other than the big 4. He has one Australian Open and has went out at the QFs more times than he even reached the final.I've already mentioned his Wimbledon record. And his US Open record is similar to that at the Australian.

He is a fantastic player. But he is too dependent on one surface in my opinion to be considered a GOAT contender.

Nadal is an Australian Open win away from becoming the 3rd man in history to win every Grand Slam at least twice. That'd be pretty cool, I hope he can do but I don't think it's likely

Anyway, in other news Wawrinka will drop out of the top 4 in the rankings tomorrow, there is the potential for a nightmare draw for one of the big 4 at the US Open if he doesn't find his way back in.
