Def one of our best transfers ever, what a guy. Think at least 1 more title was certain if he'd stayed fit, the Virg and Gomez injuries were awful but it was Joel going down that finished us that season and we'd have had a hell of a chance this season too if he stayed fit, shame. Great player.

Got injured a lot, but when he was playing, very rarely did he have a bad game or put in a nightmare performance.

A fine passer and was unrivalled in the squad at bringing the ball out from the back.

100% he'll end up at Brentford or Brighton if he wants to stay in England. Their analysts will be licking their lips that a player this good at forward progression from the back is available on a free.

Brentford have just renewed Ben Mee for another season. I reckon they might see Matip as a risk if they’re doing that.

Sad to see him go, although it is the right call at this stage. As said, up there with Milner (and Babbel) as our best feee transfer. What a bit of business. Good luck Joel!

Apart from being a brilliant defender, his ability to draw out opposition midfielders with his dribbling was so valuable to our attack.

One of our best ever signings. Eight years being a dependable player and at his best one of the most talented and underrated CBs in Europe. Sad about this one. Still has a lot left to give and some club will be getting a superb player and person.

Logically I know Millie and Matip will go down as the best free transfers in our history, but I can’t help but think that Markus Babbel was the best one. For that single season, he blew my mind. We got a bonafide worldie at the peak of their powers from a giant club for zilch.

Matip - what a man. Very fitting that he leaves at the same time as Jurgen. Will also really miss his goofy gaffes 😁

What a player, what a contribution. It's a testament to his ability that he has come back from multiple injuries to play a major part in every season. Have to say, at the start of 2018/19 it looked like VVD and Joe were going to be the no1 partnership. Joe got injured and Matip showed he had lots to offer.

Those mazy runs, that goal against Leeds. A massive shame he isn't going to be on the pitch on Sunday (well I guess he will be after the match).

Best of luck Joel!

He never failed us.

With Virgil, the best pairing of defenders since Hansen and Lawrenson. Most definitely the unsung hero of that Champions League and league winning side.

Best wishes Joel, you're an absolute legend that saw us through our strongest moments.

A shame to go out this way.

A great player when he was available and can rightly be called a legend for his contributions on the pitch.

Seems like a great guy off the pitch too. I'm sure he'll be missed by the players and staff as much as he'll be missed by us.

Let’s face it, he was always going to go out this way. Same with Thiago.

Great player tho, as others said if he’s stayed fit we would likely had won more trophies.

I'll miss him stepping into midfield against the low block teams to try and create different angles within the team. Daniel Agger was great at that too. I have a soft spot for defenders who have the confidence and ability to do that as it can be a high risk move if you lose the ball. Never saw Hansen play as I'm 37 but I imagine he was one of the best at doing that

I never realised how tall he was as well with being 6ft 5. Crazy!

What a player, and a great guy off the pitch by all accounts. The fact that he was a free signing meant that he didn't get the media scrutiny his true worth would have got. Which is part of the reason he's so underrated by the masses.

For me, Joel, Virg and Agger, are the cb's that could have comfortably played in any of our past PL teams.

One of our best ever PL centre backs and leaves the club as a true legend.
