BOSS.

No wonder big Virg loves him.

Brilliant player. Hopefully he is behind his injury problems

Dont think he ever will be "over" his injury problems. Difference is we are able to protect him a lot more with Konate and Gomez as back-ups that are quality and can be trusted so Matip can get away with just 1 game a week

It'd never happen, but I'd love to see him as a 6 for us. But the club is doing a great job of managing his game time and fitness and playing him in midfield would go against that.

Then again, he's probably better off, and doing the same thing anyway, as a box to box defender as described by Kashinoda. Much like Trent as a playmaker at RB.

He really needs to knock off the just throwing a foot at balls. He does it quite often and has scored a fair few OGs cause of it, other than that he was good again today.

How do you attempt blocks if you don't throw a foot at the ball? I'd be more offended if the defender had the ball within range and didn't throw his foot at the ball.

It better block it where you can help control the direction. Alisson had the shot handled likely if they score a worldie, all the credit too them. Being tighter to the defender is generally helps blocking it more.
Virgil at times will just allow somebody to shoot because he directed them too a low percentage shot and knows Alisson is covering it.
Trent on the Persic shot came to pressure then blocked the left footed shot(His "Stronger side) and the pass to Dzeko.
Defenders and the GK are playing a percentage game in terms of decision making what going, delay and make them take the worst possible shot or just mess out at times.

I’m going to need you to link me to the ‘fair few own goals’ he has scored. I can’t remember any and the above link suggests he’s never scored an own goal in the league, so I’m keen to see where you’ve got this stat from.

He's not scored any in the PL, but has scored 2 since 2018 in the cups. One against West Brom in the FA Cup and one against Bayern in the CL.

There was the City 2-2 earlier this season to be fair, which went down as a De Bruyne goal despite Joel's deflection.

The only "official" OG Matip scored with us I think is away at Bayern when we won 3-1, but if he hadn't tried to cut out the cross there Lewandowski would've had a tap -in from two yards out.

I agree with you that I don't see it as an issue with the way Matip defends, though.

One of our players of the season so far as steady as a rock in defence and Hansenlike when he comes forward as must be one of the best ball carrying center backs I have seen in recent memory. Brilliant to see the man ghost forward as it looks like he gains a yard in pace when running forward.

In terms of blocking or not blocking a shot surely a defender has to put his body in the way otherwise a forward will be shooting at every opportunity he gets. Old school here as hate how the game has progressed to where defenders have to stand unnaturally with hands behind back just in case a ball is blasted against their arm from 5 yards away. Accidental handball rule was there for a reason but the powers to be tinkered with game and now you have lost some of the great arts in defending. We will never see a sliding tackle again esp from behind as its automatic foul these days even if the defender gets all ball first.
I have a simple philosophy: Fill what's empty. Empty what's full. Scratch where it itches. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zi5-V75v-6I

A sliding tackle from behind is a sure fire way of injuring an opponent. We saw it with the Elliott one. When someone is coming in from your blindspot and they are in some sense out of control (because it's the definition of a sliding tackle that you're out of control in some ways!) you're going to get injuries. I'd rather the best attacking players are protected from potentially very dangerous tackles personally.

That rondon video is gold. And another vote from me on the marauding runs, I absolutely love them. A brilliant weapon to disrupt both a high press and also a low block. What a player he is. Probably a better free transfer than Milner for me if he can keep this fitness up.

That Sky clip showing the top goalscorers against Liverpool in the PL era, and third on the list was Jamie Carragher. There was one season where Skrtel scored 5 for us and 3 against. OGs are an occupational hazard, and I've scored my share in park football.
