God I love Milner.

I hope this means when he retires in the future that he look back with the feeling that Liverpool is the club he wanna be mainly identified with, yes I know he's a Leeds United fan at heart. Considering how the Man City boo him at every turn as well.

Got to love Milly

Cracked me up with his interview with Robertson last night, asked what was the next step after celebrating with Ribena before and he says he might go for something exotic, something fizzy like lime and lemonade :lmao

He's been saying how he sees the numbers on the wall at Melwood and has just been thinking he wants to add to them in his time here, what a way to do it

He's a role-model professional taking care of his body extremely well and we can afford it, so two years at the same terms as he's had would be very fair after this season. Even if he's role would diminish in 2021, he'd still be a very good player to have in the dressing room and to bring on as an impact player at the end of the game given the man can run a marathon below three hours with ease and is playing such a key role in those situations late in games.

I'd love him to stay.

But... he hasn't got may years left and I'd imagine the pull to get his Leeds side promoted would be strong. What a way to finish off a "Tough Of The Track" story.  Win the CL and then get your boyhood team promoted in your final playing season.

I don't think anyone could begrudge him that.

Thats my hope, that he's treated his body so well, that he'll be able to extend his playing days far beyond his peers.

Can't help but recalling Javier Zanetti who was able to continue playing for Inter well into his late thirties, thanks to how well he treated his body. Zanetti famously, on his wedding day, brought along a pair of trainers, to nip off for a quick run between the ceremony and the reception, you know like you do? On his honeymoon, his wife "accidentally" booked a hotel without a gym, so he did squats with his wife on his back, on the beach of course, it was their honeymoon after all.

Milner seems like he is cut from the same cloth, and although the intensity of a Klopp team may not allow him to continue playing regularly until he's nearly 40, I'm hoping he'll stick around for a few more years at least, and I agree with other posters that he should be given a coaching role. Considering how Klopp has underlined the importance of Milner's communication abilities, I'd imagine that Klopp has already discussed that possibility with him already.

He's shown no signs of slowing down to any great extent so a couple more years to be had out of him yet.

not sure how much his age is an issue when he got the highest score in the bleep test on day one last pre season. I know Fabinho was shocked, and I think he came really low down on the scores. Even doing that a year ago will have an effect on other players fitness during this short break, as none of them will want to come last, and they will all suspect that Millie will come back fit as ever for the first day, just like the last time.

A few of us were chatting about him and his professionalism and the conversation got around to Rooney. Milner is only 3 months younger than Rooney, but if you compare their last 2 seasons, it's night and day. Milner, 2 European Cup Finals including a win, part of a 97 point squad, and likely to get an extension.
Rooney, bombed out of Utd. Bombed out of Everton and now seeing out is days in the States.
You then look at Milner and how he looks after himself and compare it to Rooney. They both made their debuts at 16. The contrast is stark.

Doubt Rooney would swap his career for Milner's tbf.

Odd comparison really, Milner lasting longer in to his 30s will be in no small amount down to his absolute professionalism, but you only need to take one look at the two of them to see that Milner was just born a better athlete.

I wasn't comparing careers. It's more the fact that one is going strong and the other is knackered at 33. As you say, in no small part due to his professionalism. There's plenty of examples of players that weren't natural athletes that were still performing beyond 33.

Considering how Klopp has underlined the importance of Milner's communication abilities, I'd imagine that Klopp has already discussed that possibility with him already.

For two contemporary examples, see Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Cristiano Ronaldo. Both are absolutely committed to the perfect diet and keeping themselves fresh, neither drink alcohol at all and look at how they deliver in the ages they are in now.

... but the MLS... yes I know. Still, Zlatan is 37, did his ACL at 35 and still is completely obliterating the league unlike other European players who went there. He arguably had his best season of his career when he was close to 35 (his final one at PSG). Also, Ronaldo is 34 and was the sole Juventus player who could walk out of the CL with his head held high, having scored all of their knockout stage goals and having seen Real Madrid collapse completely without him rescuing them time and time again. The way Ronaldo is going, I'd not be surprised if he was able to still be Juve's best player even in five years time should he want to!

It's no coincidence it's them and not Wayne Rooney or many other British players delivering way up in the age brackets. Milner and Henderson both have a very continental approach to fitness and health and therefore should be able to play on a lot longer than other Brits have done.

He's had an excellent career, with Saturday completing his medal collection at club level. I think he'd be gutted that Leeds didn't get promoted. If he left on a free this summer and joined them in the Premier League until the end of his career you'd think fair fucks. He's gone full circle and won everything he's had the chance to do so, ending on a high with us. He's too good for the Championship, but probably isn't a guaranteed starter for us. He'll probably spend a fair bit of time considering his next move, if Leeds got promoted it would have been easy.

On a side note, I thought he put a great shift in when he came off the bench on Saturday. Gini was struggling and our midfield was getting overrun. A very good sub by Klopp. Milner's energy and experience was very useful to introduce at that stage.

Would love to see him here for another few years. He can still be vital for challenging for the league, and a solid role model for any younger players. But if he did want to leave to his boyhood club at any point I would definitely not begrudge him that. He's a Liverpool legend no matter what happens.

The more you hear about him, the more you admire him, that really is a great gesture.

I know Klopp talks up our players in public, but it really does seem like he's pretty influential behind the scenes and plays a part in communicating or reinforcing what Klopp wants.

I'm torn. I want him to stay with us in a coaching capacity etc long term. But equally I do sort of like the idea of him giving us one last year next year (winning the league obviously) and then dropping down and being the man who takes his hometown club back to the Premier League after nearly 20 years out of it. If anyone deserves that career arc it's him.

(Naturally Leeds get relegated the year after...)

Him and Matip vying for those honors.

Still Gary Mac for me, as he was an actual starting player 90% of the time, whereas last year or 2 Milner has never been good enough to get in our absolute first choice 11 (although that is largely due to the much better players around him than Gary Mac); and before that he was a good, but not exception, LB when Moreno was carp.  It's only Milner's comparative longevity which is having people compare the two.  And that is just coming to us, of course.  Best free transfer involving us would have to be Macca to Real - MOTM in a CL final less than 1 year after going there, player of the season in the first year, etc.

Mcallister in the treble season actually started the same amount of games as Milner despite the team playing a lot more games. Comparatively Milner has started more. :)

All Comps:

Gary McAllister 2000-2001 - 49 Appearances Link
Started = 31, On the Bench = 4, On as a substitute = 18

James Milner, 2018-2019 - 45 Appearances Link
Started = 31, On the Bench = 3, On as a substitute = 14

Made up he got a big trophy. If he left without one he could have regretted the move a bit, or just been gutted about it given what City have won.

However, winning the CL with us, and this whole weekend, will mean more to him than if he'd stayed at City and won another load of medals. Like Gerrard with Chelsea even. Hopefully a few more to come, starting with Wembley against those scumbags.

He's one of us now.
