No.3 - Gerry Byrne
No.11 - Ian Callaghan (although close with Souness)
Gerry Byrne - spot on number 3 [left back]
But after this is where it starts to get a bit subjective and depends upon who occupied a particular shirt during your own most formative years which for me was the time when shirt numbers actually represented positions on the pitch not lottery numbers!
So for me Thommo [that's the incredible Peter of course not Phil] will always be number 11 [outside left] and Cally will always be number 7 [outside right]
Similarly Sir Roger will always be number 8 [inside right] and St John number 9 [centre forward]
Chrissie lawler will always be number 2 [right back], Rowdy will always be number 5 [centre half], Willie Stevo will always be nunber 6 [left half] and Gordon Milne number 4 [Right Half]
The only anomaly is Tommy Smith at number 10 which up until Tommy Smith was always the shirt for the inside left position [the deeper of the two inside forwards] but Shanks dropped Smithy back alongside Rowdy to form the twin centre half partnership which up until then had never been done. It had always been one of the wing halfs dropping deeper.
Since then numbers have meant absolutely fuck all to me apart from Kevin Keegan and Kenny in the number 7 shirt.
Good eh.
