Driving Songs
« on: March 1, 2013, 03:00:48 pm »
I'm looking to make a few driving playlists on Spotify for the summer, there are three requirements.

  • None of the usual fare like; 'Free - All right now' or 'Allman Brothers - Jessica', basically anything that has saturated the airwaves too much or been closely linked with driving before.
  • I need the songs to match the tone that comes with driving at different times of day (the mindset has to be that it's a warm day/night and you've got an open road to cruise).
  • There can't be more than three songs in any playlist from a single artist.
I have broken this into three categories along with a few examples, as seen below:

Driving - Day (Rory Gallagher - Shadow Play, Dinosaur Jr. - Pieces, Stone Roses - This is the one)
Driving - Dusk (Bruce Springsteen - I'm on Fire, Tear for fears - Everyone wants to rule the world, Smashing Pumpkins - Landslide)
Driving - Night (Blue Oyster Cult - Don't fear the reaper, Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah, Survivor - American Heartbeat)

Please feel free to inspire me :wave

It's certainly not for everyone, but there is a reason this fella's music was used so much in the film DRIVE. Good for driving at night. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MV_3Dpw-BRY or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQSHg-SJXR8 are both good tracks.

If you like Dinosaur Jr then a blast from Buffallo Tom could go down well. There's a link to JJ Cale's Troubadour on this page which is one of THE driving LP's probably. A true stoner's drive.

I was following the 2012 album of the year thread and had heard of hardly any of the bands, so got a few of their albums. It was mostly very different and not something I'd usually listen to but interesting. One album I really like playing while driving (at loud volume) is Coexist by The XX

Otherwise, my playlist is playing on Pandora under a different category every day

Right so this is where I am so far, this is an iterative process so no doubt some of these will be dropped after a few trial runs.

I might've broken the rules in regards to not including clichéd tracks. As you can see night time is a challenge for me, I thought it would've been easier in truth. I want to try and get a few more pop numbers in there as it's very rock orientated

Best driving song ever is Steppenwolf's Born To Be Wild.

Second best driving song ever is Truckin' by the Grateful Dead.

Put these two tracks on 'Repeat' until the journey is over................suitable for coast-to-coast in the USA or a simple trip to Tesco's............
They laugh at me because I'm different.
I laugh at them because they are all the same.....

So you've roared onto the highway, there's very little traffic, no police around to give you a ticket, you turn up the volume, and let it rip...

I was driving on a warm day last Summer/Autumn with the windows down and Foo Fighters turned up pretty loudly. I'm not a big fan of them so I don't know the name of the song, but Dave Grohl started screaming "It's a shame we have to die my dear, no-ones getting out of here alive." At this moment, I look to my left, and see a funeral parlour with what must be 100 people in the car park.

Rush - a driving song about a car

The one and only problem with that song is that it gives you lead foot. I had a Mini Cooper back home and it was very smooth, so you couldn't tell by feel how fast you were going - I put "Red Barchetta" on one night while I was driving on the highway in the middle of nowhere, nothing but corn for miles, the lights far apart on the side of the road, fellow drivers even farther apart. "...I spin around with shrieking tires, To run the deadly race, Go screaming through the valley, As another joins the chase ..." Alex tears into his guitar and I look down and I am going 103 miles per hour in that tiny car.
At the hole where he went in
Red-Eye called to Wrinkle-Skin.
Hear what little Red-Eye saith:
"Nag, come up and dance with death!'"
