Going to be a bit of a battle here.

Think we should be looking at Carragher (Never gives up), Kelly (Local lad, knows the score), Enrique (Class), Skrtel (Doesn't take any shit)

In midfield Gerrard has to start, Henderson gets stuck in, Kuyt works his socks off, Maxi I would tip to score tonight.

And up front Suarez and Carroll (Scores against Everton) and bring Bellamy on later.

We stand a chance. More than a chance.

Predictions: 5-0. Scorers (Carroll Hat Trick, Dirky Dirk 1, Gerrard (Pen).

Blueshite sent off: Howard, Neville.

They both went in high, that's factually correct, both tried to play the ball at height.  Doku with his foot, Mac Allister with his chest.

I think we'll go with experience tonight. With that in mind i'm expecting something like:

Pepe

Johnson  Carra  Skrtel  Enrique

Spearing  Gerrard

Kuyt  Maxi  Bellamy

Suarez

If we go for this though our success will depend massively on the three advanced midfielders showing the required movement and desire to support Suarez. It's vital that they get in and around him and, when possible - ahead of him. I've been disappointed to see Carroll dropped again, just as he was beginning to show some kind of form. I don't think that will have helped him in the slightest, but for this game in particular I feel that playing him could play directly into the hands of the Everton centre halves. Suarez' movement and trickery will cause them far more problems, but again, it will depend heavily on the support that is provided to him and Maxi, for all of his limitations, is an intelligent footballer and if nothing else, he's proven time and again that he will support the striker, which is something that we are lacking.

On the other hand, if Downing and Henderson start in the wide positions, with Adam in the centre, then I will be extremely worried.

Certain players need to stand-up and be counted.
Henderson cannot afford to go missing if he gets a start tonight.
Given Adam's recent struggles I'd be tempted to put Hendo in the middle but I can't help thinking the game will pass him by.

If nothing else then I expect to see one thing from our players tonight. Pride. Both in the club and the support that they're representing, and in themselves as well.

Lets be honest though, this is the kind of game that we will be up for and it would be no surprise to see us win. However, we go to QPR in a couple of weeks. How many could say the same for that game? Again, it comes down to pride as well as attitude and both have been sadly lacking by too many IMO.

Would have a Gerrard, Adam...

Not a chance i'd start Adam on the back of his recent performances. He's been nothing short of a liability at times and to be quite honest, he looks lost. He needs pulling out for a spell as much for his own sake as our own.

Spearing should start this one for me. You know what you're going to be up against with Everton and we need to match them physically first and foremost. Earn the right to play, to steal a cliche. Spearing is one in our squad, for all of his limitations, that will do just that. My worry with him is if he was too fired up and did something reckless and got sent off.

This, and he fucking owes us big time.
Time to show you're a man Andrew.

I think that's a little bit harsh to be honest. Two or three months ago I might have agreed with you but in recent weeks and months he's started to show some promising form and when he (finally) does so he immediately finds himself dropped again. It puzzles me, i'll admit.

As i've already said though, I don't think this is a game for Carroll. As much as I believe that he can feel disappointed at finding himself on the bench again, his attributes would simply play into the hands of the Everton bruisers at the back. They would relish the physical battle with him much more so than the wit and guile that they would face with Suarez supported by a fluid trio behind him. I'd have him on the bench for this and start him against Stoke at the weekend.

I wonder if tonights game will be less frantic and tough as normal, don't forget both teams have massive cup ties this week end and nobody will want to risk injury/red cards etc.

Suits us if it is a bit more low key, either way 2-0 to us, Carroll and Gerrard.

Rafael Benitez on the Merseyside derby

Former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez chats to Dan Walker about the significance of Tuesday's Merseyside derby in our latest Focus Forum.

Benitez says the passion of the players and the people of Liverpool made him realise the the importance of the derby game, discusses the achievements of Everton boss David Moyes, and gives his opinion on the state of Kenny Dalglish's Reds side.

Benitez also looks forward to Chelsea's Champions League tie with Napoli on Wednesday, and Manchester United's attempts to overturn their 3-2 Europa League defeat to Athletic Bilbao.
